Book Study Course on the Ripley Scroll

Download or read book Study Course on the Ripley Scroll written by Adam McLean and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ripley Scroll is one of the most beautiful and important of alchemical manuscripts. It dates from the early 16th century. 21 examples have survived and the earliest is in Oxford. A late copy made in 1624 was recently sold (Dec 2000) in an auction at Sotheby's for £206,000 ($300,000). So it is an extremely valuable and rare work. The scroll is an English alchemical manuscript and is among the earliest alchemical works that incorporate allegorical imagery and text, it predates the well known 'Splendor solis' and 'Rosarium Philosophorum' illustrations. It has not yet been conclusively established that it was the work of George Ripley, but his name has always been associated with this scroll. In the first few months of 2002 I worked on making a facsimile of this famous work basing it upon three of the best known and earliest versions of the scroll. I redrew and coloured the images. Most of the surviving scrolls are in poor condition and the colouring has consequently faded, so making this facsimile provided the opportunity of recreating the scroll in its original vivid colours. I also have used my modern version of the text on the scroll. The original 15th/16th-century middle English verse is rather difficult for people inexperienced with this material to read.

Book Theatrum Chemicum Brittannicum

Download or read book Theatrum Chemicum Brittannicum written by Elias Ashmole and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To All Ingeniously Elaborate Students, In the most Divine Mysteries of Hermetique Learning." Or so British politician and Freemason ELIAS ASHMOLE (1617-1692) dedicated this curious artifact of the esoteric and spiritual philosophy of alchemy. An avid collector of antiquaries and other oddities (they were, upon his death, bequeathed to Oxford University, which used them to found the Ashmolean Museum), Ashmole counted among his treasures volumes of metaphysical poems available only in private, and fiercely guarded, manuscripts. In 1652, though, he collected many of these writings in this hefty tome, annotated with his own comments. Included are: . "The Ordinall of Alchimy" by Thomas Norton . "The Compound of Alchymie" by Sir George Ripley . "Liber Patris Sapientiae" . "The Tale of the Chanons Yeoman" by Geoffry Chaucer . "The Worke of John Dastin" . "The Hunting of the Greene Lyon" by the Viccar of Malden . "Bloomsfields Blossoms: Or, The Campe of Philosophy" . "Sir Ed Kelley Concerning the Philosopher's Stone" . and much more. Once a resource for such natural philosophers as Isaac Newton, the Theatrum Chemicum Brittannicum remains an astonishing album of arcania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Nintzel added this work to the R.A.M.S. Library in 1982. Abrahami Eleazaris Uraltes Chymisches Werk," although an edition from 1735 is said to exist (see Note at the end of the Forward). The author might have been Julius Gervasius of Schwarzburg. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1755 the most comprehensive listing of alchemical symbols was published at Ulm in Germany, the 'Medicinisch-chymisch- und alchemistisches Oraculum'. The book consists of a series of thirty four full page engravings of 1829 symbols with the names in Latin and German overprinted in letterpress. There are 359 entries with multiple graphic images associated with each entry. Some ten years ago Adam McLean placed these images onto his alchemy web site. A number of people then asked him to provide explanations for the obscure terms, but he was not immediately able to find the time to do this. At the end of 2013 he had the idea of issuing this in book form, and after a few months editorial work and research this has resulted in the present volume in the Hermetic Studies series.

Book Stanzas

Download or read book Stanzas written by Giorgio Agamben and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stanzas" (which means "rooms" in Italian) is a blend of philology, the psychoanalysis of toys, medieval physics and psychology, and contemporary linguistics and philosophy. In this work, Giorgio Agamben attempts to reconfigure the epistemological foundation of Western culture. He rereads Freud and Saussure to discover the impossibility of metalanguage - there is no "superior language" that can read the obscure scenes of the unconscious, and the "symbol" is always the return of the repressed in an improper signifier. This impossibility leads Agamben to the problem of representation. He argues that since language is the locus of the production and storage of phantasms, all real objects are fractured by phantasmic itineraries that in turn divide poetry and philosophy, joy and knowledge. This division is at the origin of Western culture and renders impossible the possession of any object of knowledge. Giorgio Agamben is the author of "Language and Death" (University of Minnesota Press 1991).

Book Education for Life and Work

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have long recognized that investments in public education contribute to the common good, enhancing national prosperity and supporting stable families, neighborhoods, and communities. Education is even more critical today, in the face of economic, environmental, and social challenges. Today's children can meet future challenges if their schooling and informal learning activities prepare them for adult roles as citizens, employees, managers, parents, volunteers, and entrepreneurs. To achieve their full potential as adults, young people need to develop a range of skills and knowledge that facilitate mastery and application of English, mathematics, and other school subjects. At the same time, business and political leaders are increasingly asking schools to develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management - often referred to as "21st century skills." Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century describes this important set of key skills that increase deeper learning, college and career readiness, student-centered learning, and higher order thinking. These labels include both cognitive and non-cognitive skills- such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, effective communication, motivation, persistence, and learning to learn. 21st century skills also include creativity, innovation, and ethics that are important to later success and may be developed in formal or informal learning environments. This report also describes how these skills relate to each other and to more traditional academic skills and content in the key disciplines of reading, mathematics, and science. Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century summarizes the findings of the research that investigates the importance of such skills to success in education, work, and other areas of adult responsibility and that demonstrates the importance of developing these skills in K-16 education. In this report, features related to learning these skills are identified, which include teacher professional development, curriculum, assessment, after-school and out-of-school programs, and informal learning centers such as exhibits and museums.
