Book excerpt: Investigations were conducted in the eastern plains of Colombia to study the effects of mineral supplementation and pasture type on grazing beef cattle. Eight of zebu cows of 30-35 cows per herd were used. Two herds grazing native pasture were supplemented with salt only; two grazing native pasture received a complete mineral supplement consisting of salt, dicalcium phosphate and trace minerals (copper, iron, zinc, manganese, iodine and cobalt); two herds grazed native pasture during the dry season and molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora) during the rainy seaseon and receivel complete mineral supplementation; and the two other herds grazed molasses grass the entire year and received complete mineral supplementation. One herd of each treatment grupo received a urea-molasses-sulfur supplement during the dry seasson. Analyses of native molasses grass hand plucked pasture samples were: in vitro organic matter digestibility, 44.61 and 48.64 per cent; nitrogen, 1.42 and 1.41 per cent; phosphorus, 12 and 21 per cent; calcium, 13 and .21 per cent; magnesium, .16 and .18 per cent; potassium, 90 and per cent; sodium, 012 and .008 per cent; iron, 566 and 389 ppm, mangneses, 186 and 95 ppm, zinc, 13.4 and 18.4 ppm; copper, 1.7 and ppm; cobalt, .1 and .08 ppm and molydenum .55 and .49 ppm, respectively. The values were influenced by season and by burning the native pasture. In the dry season nitrogen and phosphorus increased in native grass but decresed in molasses grass. In both grasses calcium and magnesium decreased while potassium.
