Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on Two Aberrant Ctenophores, Coeloplana and Gastrodes Although Abbott's works on Coeloplana which appeared in 1902 and 1907 shed a great deal of light on the structure of that interesting animal, yet much has remained to be elucidated, especially as regards its development. In fact, the embryology of the animal has never been studied. As a consequence, there still exists a difference of opinion among authors with respect to the systematic position to be assigned to the animal, some of them regarding it as a transitional form in the stages of evolution from the Ctenophora to the Turbellaria, while others believe its striking resemblance to the latter group to be nothing more than an instance of convergent adaptation. In 1916 I took up the study of Coeloplana with the intention of verifying the accounts given by Abbott and to fill up, if possible, some of the gaps in our knowledge of the animal. Fortunately enough, a fairly plentiful supply of material for my use could be obtained at Misaki. This enabled me to realize my intention in a measure. Especially a fortunate circumstance was that material was securable on which to undertake a study of the development. Some of the results of my researches have already been given in a preliminary report published in 1920 (a). The present paper embodies a fuller account of the results in regard to the anatomy and development of the animal. During the whole course of the study, I was quite unaware of that Krempf also had been engaged in the same research. But, when I saw his work published, I was glad to find that, there was no great discord between our studies, at least as far as important points are concerned. I have been able to refer to his results in the present work, and as to the points of disagreement, I have dealt with them somewhat in detail. The facts about Gastrodes given in the second part of this paper are, so to speak, by-products of the research in Coeloplana. While consulting literature necessary for that work, my attention was attracted to the existence of another peculiar form called Gastrodes which had been referred to the Ctenophora with some doubt, and in the hope of making out the nature of that animal, I was waiting for the opportunity of studying it. Book Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction

Download or read book Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction written by Fatma El-Bawab and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-01-18 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction deals with the practical and theoretical objectives of the descriptive embryology of invertebrates, along with discussions on reproduction in these groups of animals. It explains several morphological and anatomical expressions in the field and covers the embryology of invertebrate animals, starting from the Protozoa, to the Echinodermata, the Protochordate and Tunicates. These groups include economically important aquatic invertebrates, such as crustaceans, as well as medically important invertebrates and economic arthropods. Each chapter is preceded by the taxonomy of the discussed phylum and/or the species to enable the reader to locate the systematic position. Covers phylum definition, general characteristics, classification, reproduction, agametic reproduction, gametic reproduction, spawning, fertilization, development and embryogenesis Includes recent findings in the area, along with detailed figures and photos that illustrate important concepts Brings together difficult-to-obtain research data from the field, not only in Egyptian libraries, but globally, and previously only found through specialized references not widely available Clarifies descriptions with striking photos and electron microscopical studies of different species

Book Acoelomate and Pseudocoelomate Metazoans

Download or read book Acoelomate and Pseudocoelomate Metazoans written by Arthur C. Giese and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproduction of Marine Invertebrates, Volume I: Acoelomate and Pseudocoelomate Metazoans is a collection of papers that deals with the evolution of reproductive mechanisms and behavior in marine invertebrates. This collection starts with terminologies and basic events in marine invertebrate reproduction, including the method of estimating sexual reproductive activity, as well as the timing and patterns involved. The book notes that temperatures, salinities, or food availability should be favorable when the young are produced and when they are developing. One paper shows that the reproductive rhythm is dynamic and in some species is latitude-dependent. Other papers discuss the reproductive cycles of different marine invertebrates such as the Porifera, Cnidaria, Nemertinea, and Nematoda. These papers include topics on asexual reproduction, regeneration, sexual reproduction, and development, and then explain in detail the development of certain invertebrates from their kinorhynchs state (embryonic), to the molting stages, juvenile stages, then to adulthood. This book can be useful for marine biologists, marine ecologists, and students involved in marine biological and physical sciences.
