It is characterized by severe retardation of growth, stunting, and yellowish appearance on the aerial parts of the plants. The foliage of the diseased plant falls off early. The plant bears only a few flowers, and a few seeds which are smaller in size and inferior in quality to the normal ones. The roots of affected plants bear many developed lateral rootlets and in most cases many fewer bacterial nodules than those of healthy plants. Considerable yield losses have been attributed to cyst nematodes attacking potatoes, sugar beet, soybean and cereals. Because of the protective cyst that is formed, which encloses the eggs, they pose special problems in their control and also in preventing their distribution in soil from infested areas. There has been much research on many aspects of the biology of cyst nematodes and the large number of publications are testimony to their importance as crop pests and of the interest of nematologists in the group. Nevertheless, they continue to pose problems because of the complexity of their phylogeny and taxonomy and there is still much to be investigated on their biology, particularly with those aspects which relate to improving the effectiveness of control. In many respects the biology of the various cyst nematode species is similar, although with variations due to different interactions with hosts and geographical location. Thus, research on any one species has general applicability and this is particularly so with regard to evaluation of control measures, or to the methodology of soil sampling for the assessment of populations prior to growing crops.

Book excerpt: The soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines Ichinohe, is responsible for substantial economic losses in soybean (Glycine max Merr) production throughout the United States. Results from efforts to quantify the severity of crop damage resulting from SCN were subject to variable experimental conditions resulting from differences in weather, soil type, and cultivar. Because of the difficulty accounting for these variables, a crop growth simulation model was chosen as a platform for studying the dynamics of SCN damage and for transferring knowledge between crop production scenarios. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate hypotheses for coupling SCN damage to the process oriented crop growth model CROPGRO-Soybean. A constant damage factor was calculated as a function of the initial population density of SCN eggs in the soil (Pi) and applied to CROPGRO-Soybean. Biomass data collected in 1997 and 1998 from a site in Iowa were used to estimate damage function parameters for two independent coupling points, one applied to reduce daily photosynthesis (Pg) and the other applied to reduce daily potential root water uptake (RWU). Biomass data collected in 1997 and 1998 from a site in Missouri were used to validate the SCN damage hypotheses. Coupling point hypothesis validation showed that the Pg coupling point represented the variability of the data better than the RWU coupling point. The root mean squared errors (RMSE) of canopy and grain biomass was 0.245 and 0.198, respectively, for the RWU coupling point and 0.238 and 0. 193, respectively, for the Pg coupling point.
