Book Studies of the Polymorphs of RDX

Download or read book Studies of the Polymorphs of RDX written by Stephen T. Sergio and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this research has been to investigate the lattice and molecular dynamics of RDX by observing the effects of both slow and rapid heating on the vibrational modes of RDX, and to determine if a thermally induced phase transition to the unstable polymorph can be observed spectroscopically. A laser Raman investigation of octahydro-1-3-5-7-tetranitro-1-3-5-7-tetrazocine (HMX), the eight-member ring analog of RDX, has shown that thermally induced phase transitions can be observed and recorded with major, easily recognizable differences in the spectra of the different polymorphs. Book Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals 2e

Download or read book Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals 2e written by Joel Bernstein and published by International Union of Crystal. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people are familiar with the fact that diamond and graphite are both composed only of carbon; yet they have very different properties which result from the very different structures of the two solids - they are polymorphs of carbon. Understanding the relationship between the structures and the properties of materials is of fundamental importance in developing and producing new materials with improved or new properties. The existence of polymorphic systems allows the direct study of the connection between structures and properties. This book provides grounding on the fundamental structural and energetic basis for polymorphism, the preparation and characterization of polymorphic substances and its importance in the specific areas of pharmaceuticals, pigments and high energy (explosive) materials. The closing chapter describes the intellectual property implications and some of the precedent patent litigations in which polymorphism has played a central role. The book contains over 2500 references to provide a ready entry into the relevant literature.

Book Mechanochemical Processes in Energetic Materials

Download or read book Mechanochemical Processes in Energetic Materials written by Adam A. L. Michalchuk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses experimental and computational methods to rationalize and predict for the first time the relative impact sensitivities of a range of energetic materials. Using knowledge of crystal structures, vibrational properties, energy-transfer mechanisms, and experimentally measured sensitivities, it describes a model that leads to excellent correlation with experimental results in all cases. As such, the book paves the way for a new, fully ab initio approach for the design of safer energetic materials based solely on knowledge of their solid-state structures. Energetic materials (explosives, propellants, gas generators, and pyrotechnics) are defined as materials that release heat and/or gaseous products at a high rate upon stimulus by heat, impact, shock, sparks, etc. They have widespread military and civilian uses, including munitions, mining, quarrying, demolition, emergency signaling, automotive safety, and space exploration. One of their most important properties is sensitivity to accidental initiation during manufacture, transport, storage, and operation, which has important implications for their safe use.

Book The Water Adsorption Properties of the Polymorphs of Hmx the Thermodynamics of Water Interaction with Ground and Unground Beta hmx

Download or read book The Water Adsorption Properties of the Polymorphs of Hmx the Thermodynamics of Water Interaction with Ground and Unground Beta hmx written by Thomas C. Castorina and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water adsorption isotherms were measured for the polymorphs of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-s-tetrazine (HMX). Water is found to sorb into the crystal structure in the order, gamma-HMX> alpha-HMX, and not at all into beta-HMX. The thermodynamics of water interaction with the surface of beta-HMX was studied as a function of grinding action. Grinding reduces the free surface energy of beta-HMX from 25 to 5 ergs/sq cm, and increases the hydrophobic character of the surface by a factor of 12. The calculated thermodynamic functions support the concept of adsorption of water in clusters on both ground and unground beta-HMX surfaces. The integral heat of water adsorption increases with increasing hydrophobicity. This is attributed to unhindered dipole interaction of water with the more isolated active sites of like charges. Accordingly, water is shown to become less entropic as the hydrophobicity is increased. (Author).

Book Energetic Materials at Extreme Conditions

Download or read book Energetic Materials at Extreme Conditions written by David I.A. Millar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-24 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David I.A. Millar's thesis explores the effects of extreme conditions on energetic materials. His study identifies and structurally characterises new polymorphs obtained at high pressures and/or temperatures. The performance of energetic materials (pyrotechnics, propellants and explosives) can depend on a number of factors including sensitivity to detonation, detonation velocity, and chemical and thermal stability. Polymorphism and solid-state phase transitions may therefore have significant consequences for the performance and safety of energetic materials. In order to model the behaviour of these important materials effectively under operational conditions it is essential to obtain detailed structural information at a range of temperatures and pressures.

Book Materials Characterization for Systems Performance and Reliability

Download or read book Materials Characterization for Systems Performance and Reliability written by James W. McCauley and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986-03-31 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sagamore Army Materials Research Conferences have been held in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of New York State since 1954. Organized and conducted by the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center (Watertown, Massachusetts) in cooperation with Syracuse University, the Conferences have focused on key issues in Materials Science and Engineering that impact directly on current or future Army problem areas. A select group of speakers and attendees are assembled from academia, industry, and other parts of the Department of Defense and Government to provide an optimum forum for a full dialogue on the selected topic. This book is a collection of the full manuscripts of the formal presentations given at the Conference. The emergence and use of nontraditional materials and the excessive failures and reject rates of high technology, materials intensive engineering systems necessitates a new approach to quality control. Thus, the theme of this year's Thirty-First Conference, "Materials Characterization for Systems Performance and Reliability," was selected to focus on the need and mechanisms to transition from defect interrogation of materials after production to utilization of materials characterization during manufacturing. The guidance and help of the steering committee and the dedicated and conscientious efforts of Ms. Karen Ka100stian, Con ference Coordinator, and Mr. William K. Wilson, and Ms. Mary Ann Holmquist are gratefully acknowledged. The continued active interest and support of Dr. Edward S. Wright, Director, AMMRC; Dr. Robert W. Lewis, Associate Director, AMMRC; and COL L. C. Ross, Commander/ Deputy Director, AMMRC; are greatly appreciated.

Book Static Compression of Energetic Materials

Download or read book Static Compression of Energetic Materials written by Suhithi M. Peiris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing and testing novel energetic materials is an expanding branch of the materials sciences. Reaction, detonation or explosion of such materials invariably produce extremely high pressures and temperatures. To study the equations-of-state (EOS) of energetic materials in extreme regimes both shock and static high pressure studies are required. The present volume is an introduction and review of theoretical, experimental and numerical aspects of static compression of such materials. Chapter 1 introduces the basic experimental tool, the diamond anvil pressure cell and the observational techniques used with it such as optical microscopy, infrared spectrometry and x-ray diffraction. Chapter 2 outlines the principles of high-nitrogen energetic materials synthesis. Chapters 3 and 4, examine and compare various EOS formalisms and data fitting for crystalline and non-crystalline materials, respectively. Chapter 5 details the reaction kinetics of detonating energetic materials. Chapter 6 investigates the interplay between static and dynamic (shock) studies. Finally, Chapters 7 and 8 introduce numerical simulations: molecular dynamics of energetic materials under either hydrostatic or uni-axial stress and ab-inito treatments of defects in crystalline materials. This timely volume meets the growing demand for a state-of-the art introduction and review of the most relevant aspects of static compression of energetic materials and will be a valuable reference to researchers and scientists working in academic, industrial and governmental research laboratories.
