Book STUDIES ON THE INHERITANCE OF RESISTANCE TO RICE BLIGHT DISEASE

Download or read book STUDIES ON THE INHERITANCE OF RESISTANCE TO RICE BLIGHT DISEASE written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 100 varieties of rice, including domestic and foreign varieties, were tested for resistance to disease. This year 100 different varieties were tested for disease resistance, including the disease resistance of various strains of rice. The different varieties of rice used in these tests included primarily the main disease resistant strains used for the breeding of disease resistant varieties by the Chinese Agricultural Experimental Station, some varieties possessed by the Agricultural Research Laboratory, and other varieties and strains received from the Fujisaka Testing Station and other organizations. Of these varieties, those received from the Chinese Agricultural Experimental Station were already known to be disease resistant, and therefore we conducted tests on these particular varieties with respect to their resistance to a wider range of pathogens. The strains of fungi used were the same as those used in the previous year, that is, a variety of fungi, which could be classified into seven strains.

Book Inheritance of Resistance to Rice Bacterial Leaf Blight

Download or read book Inheritance of Resistance to Rice Bacterial Leaf Blight written by Innocent Habarurema and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial leaf blight of rice, caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae, is a vascular and devastating disease of irrigated lowland and rainfed rice, Oryza sativa L. It occurs in form of complete wilting and death of affected leaves. It is widespread throughout several rice growing countries of Asia, Australia, America and Africa, contributing to substantial yield losses of up to 50%. The use of resistant cultivars is the cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and sustainable way to control the rice bacterial leaf blight among resource-poor farmers. However, detailed information on pathogen diversity in Uganda is not available. Furthermore, the genetic mechanism for resistance carried by the germplasm assembled in Uganda is not yet elucidated. The current study seeks therefore to determine the nature of inheritance of resistance to bacterial leaf blight in rice under pathogen races evolved in Ugandan environments to subsequently establish a better breeding strategy.

Book excerpt: Rice is a staple food for half of the worlds population mostly in Asia. Productivity of rice has largely been improved since the Green Revolution in 1960s. Further improvement of rice yield is necessary to keep pace with population growth, which is a challenging task for breeders. This book, Rice - Germplasm, Genetics and Improvement, as its name implies, comprehensively reviews current knowledge in germplasm exploration, genetic basis of complex traits, and molecular breeding strategies in rice. In the germplasm part, we highlight the application of wild rice in rice breeding. In the genetics part, most of the complex traits related with yield, disease, quality have been covered. In the improvement part, Chinese experiences in hybrid rice breeding have been summarized together with many molecular breeding practices scattering in different chapters.

Book The Application of Genomic Approaches in Studying a Bacterial Blight Resistant Mutant in Rice

Download or read book The Application of Genomic Approaches in Studying a Bacterial Blight Resistant Mutant in Rice written by Chang-Sheng Wang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice bacterial blight disease (BBD), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is one of the serious diseases in most rice production regions. In this report, we screened for resistance mutants from the mutation pool of TNG67 variety derived by sodium azide (SA) mutagenesis with phenotype investigation and assisted with fluorescent detection. SA0423 is a mutant of broad range resistance against Xoo for many years; the resistance was studied following the concept of central dogma. The inheritance of resistance was characterized, and three QTLs were mapped onto the genome of SA0423 using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and R/qtl by genomic approach. In transcriptomic approach, only one differential expression QTLs (eQTLs) were identified; two differentially expressed proteins (pQTLs) were identified and genetically characterized by proteomics after Xoo challenged in SA0423 mutant. To improve the bacterial blight resistance, makers are developed from QTLs, eQTLs and pQTLs to pyramid the resistance genes through marker-assisted breeding in our rice breeding programs.

Book Rice Improvement

Download or read book Rice Improvement written by Jauhar Ali and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. By 2050, human population is expected to reach 9.7 billion. The demand for increased food production needs to be met from ever reducing resources of land, water and other environmental constraints. Rice remains the staple food source for a majority of the global populations, but especially in Asia where ninety percent of rice is grown and consumed. Climate change continues to impose abiotic and biotic stresses that curtail rice quality and yields. Researchers have been challenged to provide innovative solutions to maintain, or even increase, rice production. Amongst them, the ‘green super rice’ breeding strategy has been successful for leading the development and release of multiple abiotic and biotic stress tolerant rice varieties. Recent advances in plant molecular biology and biotechnologies have led to the identification of stress responsive genes and signaling pathways, which open up new paradigms to augment rice productivity. Accordingly, transcription factors, protein kinases and enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins all contribute to an intricate network of events that guard and maintain cellular integrity. In addition, various quantitative trait loci associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of novel genes for biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Mechanistic understanding of the genetic basis of traits, such as N and P use, is allowing rice researchers to engineer nutrient-efficient rice varieties, which would result in higher yields with lower inputs. Likewise, the research in micronutrients biosynthesis opens doors to genetic engineering of metabolic pathways to enhance micronutrients production. With third generation sequencing techniques on the horizon, exciting progress can be expected to vastly improve molecular markers for gene-trait associations forecast with increasing accuracy. This book emphasizes on the areas of rice science that attempt to overcome the foremost limitations in rice production. Our intention is to highlight research advances in the fields of physiology, molecular breeding and genetics, with a special focus on increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and nutritional quality of rice.
