Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Gospels Then if they turn to the Catholic Church, which evidently satisfies the spiritual needs of its adherents, and observe their practices, they seem to be disfigured by superstition. Jesus Christ seems to occupy an in adequate position in the Catholic cult. The Gospel is not the obvious norm of Catholic piety. The Catholic prayer is not addressed directly to the Father in heaven, and its apparent indirectness offends the superficial observer. For while there must be deep things everywhere in Scripture, things past man's finding out, else it were no revelation, surely it is nothing surprising that the Son of God, who moved in all worlds as in regions familiar to Him, who was not the illuminated, but the Illuminator. Book Studies in Mark s Gospel Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Mark s Gospel Classic Reprint written by A. T. Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Mark's Gospel John Mark, the author of the Second Gospel, has absolutely nothing to say about himself in his Gospel, unless there is a veiled reference in 14:51f., where we have the elusive figure of "a certain young man" who had followed Jesus to Gethsemane and who fled, leaving his loose nightrobe, when the officer arrested the Master. This may be John Mark, the son of Mary, in whose house the disciples met at a later time (Acts 12:12). If so, it was at his mother's house that Jesus partook of the last Passover meal. But Papias says that Mark was not a personal follower of Jesus. I. Glimpses of Mark. - However, we do get a good many glimpses of John Mark in the Acts and in Paul's Epistles. By means of these we can form some idea of the young man who performed such a great work in the writing of the Gospel that lies at the basis of both Matthew and Luke, according to the almost unanimous opinion of modern scholars. "There is no critical position more generally recognized than that St. Mark forms the groundwork of St. Matthew and St. Luke." For every reason, therefore, modern Christians are interested in Mark. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Jesus: A Study of the Synoptic Gospels When we compare the four Gospels one with another, we find that the first three tell virtually the same story, for which reason they are called Synoptic, while the fourth tells a totally different one, so different and in the main so contradictory that we cannot accept both accounts as historical and must choose between them. Avoiding minor details, the two chief points of differ ence have to do with the scene of the work of Jesus and the matter of his teaching. In the Synoptic Gospels his work is wholly in Galilee until the last week of his life, in the fourth Gospel it is almost entirely in and about Jerusalem. Book An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels Classic Reprint written by Brooke Foss Westcott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels In issuing the new edition of this Essay, I can only repeat what I said nearly six years ago. The book remains with all its shortcomings such as it was when first written. Once again some mistakes which I had detected myself, and others which friends pointed out to me, have been corrected: a few additions have been made; a few phrases have been modified; but this is all that has been done in revision, nor did I purpose to do more. If the Essay has any value, it lies chiefly, 1 believe, in the encouragement which it offers to students who desire to examine the records of our Faith with patient and devout trust in the Spirit of Truth. They will know, scarcely less well than I do, where the fulfilment of my plan falls short of the design; but they will know also the certainty of the assurance, which each days work makes stronger, that Holy Scripture opens treasures new and old to men and to Churches, now as in former times, when the scribe becomes a disciple of the kingdom of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Paul and His Gospel These Studies have appeared in the pages of The Expositor, and are reprinted with the kind per mission of the Editor. The intention is not to give an exhaustive or systematic account of Paul's theology, but to present the man and his message as distinctly as the writer himself has been im pressed by them. In one oi the Century Bible Handbooks, published by Messrs. T. C. E. C. Jack, the writer has already dealt with The Life and Teaching of Paul; but necessarily in the briefest possible way. In this volume he attempts to discuss in greater detail, with more constant reference to modern difficulties, the main features of Paul's Gospel. While not unacquainted with what scholars have written on the theme, he has not thought it necessary or desirable to confuse the reader by the reproduction of a mass of con flicting Opinion; but having gone to the sources. Book Bible Studies in the Life of Paul Historical and Constructive Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Studies in the Life of Paul, Historical and Constructive The book of Acts shows in a very graphic way the rapid growth and marvelous progress of Christianity in the midst of great Opposition. We see in process of ful fillment the promise of Jesus Christ to his disciples that they should receive power after the Holy Ghost had come upon them and that they should be witnesses unto Him both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermnst part of the earth. Those were earn est times and full of stirring events, when men went forth to conquer a hostile world not With swords, but by the preaching of a gospel of peace and good will. As soon as this proclamation was made in Judea and Samaria a new instrument was chosen by Jesus Christ, in Paul, to carry His message to the uttermost part of the earth. He thus became at once the chief character in the larger work of planting and developing churches outside of Palestine. The study of Paul's life shows the difficulties encountered, the doctrines taught, and the organization perfected in the early churches. We here watch the dawn of the gospel which the Savior preached as it broadens gradually into the boundless day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Master's Way: A Study in the Synoptic Gospels This is not a "Life of Christ." It contains a series of studies based upon the more significant actions and utterances of The Master as we find them reported in the Synoptic Gospels. These studies are arranged not always in chronological but in what I trust may be considered a logical order. These chapters were originally published in "The Congregationalist" and are reproduced here by the gracious permission of its Editors. They have been freely retouched and in some cases entirely rewritten. They are brought together here in this more convenient as well as more permanent form in the hope that they may serve the needs of those laymen who are teaching in our Sunday Schools or leading Bible study groups in city and college Christian Associations, or conducting lay services in missions or chapels. They were not written for the critical scholar and I shall not suffer disappointment if he passes by on the other side to find books better suited to his needs. These chapters are offered to those who, moving along the main travelled roads of human experience, would know more of "The Master's Way," that they too may walk in it with surer tread and a more resolute purpose. "For she knoweth and understandeth all things, and she shall lead me soberly in my doings, and preserve me in her power. "So shall my works be acceptable ... "For the thoughts of mortal men are miserable, and our devices are but uncertain. "For the corruptible body presseth down the soul, and the earthly tabernacle weigheth down the mind, that museth upon many things. "And hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth, and with labour do we find the things that are before us; but the things that are in heaven who hath searched out?
