Book Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean

Download or read book Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean written by Rachakonda Nagabhushanam and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine fouling organisms attach permanently to ship hulls and underwater parts of offshore structures. All maritime nations spend millions, even billions of dollars to get rid of them. Believing that a pooling of knowledge of all aspects of the basic biology of fouling organisms and a re-examination of control technology methods are steps needed for the solution of this problem, the aim of the book is to highlight recent advances in fouling control technology and, at the same time, provide basic information on the biology of fouling organisms found in the Indian Ocean. The book begins by presenting an overview of research done in India on the marine fouling organisms and wood-borers of the Indian Ocean. It them moves through chapters dealing with the seccession of fouling communities, chemical cues in larval settlement, epibiosis, methods of fouling prevention, functional morphology, and distribution of foulers in Indian waters.

Book Bioindicators and Environmental Management

Download or read book Bioindicators and Environmental Management written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1991-09-26 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential book contains material presented at a September 1990 meeting organized by the Commission for Bioindicators, International Union for Biological Sciences.**A key role of the Commission for Bioindicators (IUBS) is to promote the use of bioindicators in environmental management. This means encouraging the transfer of ideas regarding potential bioindicators, and originating in laboratories, into the harsher realities of field environmental monitoring. Although the concept of biomonitoring is ancient, its application to current monitoring problems is relatively slow to develop.**In a bid to rectify this problem, this invaluable book brings together and discusses approaches developed around the world. It will provide both environmental administrators and research scientists with a valuable sense of proportion of the state of the art in their particular field. - Bioindicators and Environmental Management is organized into four sections - Bioindicators, industry, and administration - Biomonitoring of the Chernobyl accident - Monitoring long-term/large-scale environmental trends - Basic research in biomonitoring

Download or read book Limnology and Aquatic Birds written by Alan R. Hanson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term population monitoring is an important tool in our investigations of the role waterbirds play in their environment. This book is international in scope and presents information on species as diverse as the Common Loon, Harlequin Duck, and Semi-Palmated Sandpiper, and habitat in locations ranging from Iceland to Japan. Papers presented in this volume further our understanding of the important role that limnology plays in determining habitat suitability for waterbirds.

Book Chronobiology of Marine Organisms

Download or read book Chronobiology of Marine Organisms written by Ernest Naylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do intertidal organisms simply respond to the rise and fall of tides, or do they possess biological timing and navigation mechanisms that allow them to anticipate when conditions are most favourable? How are the patterns of growth, development and reproduction of some marine plants and animals related to changes in day-length or to phases of the moon? The author describes how marine organisms, from single cells to vertebrates, on sea shores, in estuaries and in the open ocean, have evolved inbuilt biological clockwork and synchronisation mechanisms which control rhythmic processes and navigational behaviour, permitting successful exploitation of highly variable and often hostile environments. Adopting a hypothesis-testing and experimental approach, the book is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of marine biology, marine ecology, animal behaviour, oceanography and other biological sciences and also as an introduction for researchers, including physiologists, biochemists and molecular biologists entering the field of chronobiology.
