The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.

Book excerpt: The field of slow-positron physics has expanded significantly in the last few years to include particles and atomic physics but has been most extensive in those associated with condensed matter or material science. This can primarily be attributed to the development of more efficient moderators. These moderators have been associated with both laboratory- and facility-based beams. In this paper I will focus only on the material-science aspects however. Positron can and are being used to examine all of the various fields. I feel the contribution in all these areas will be significant. I will primarily discuss those developments that have been developed in the area of interface science; a field that has both scientific and technological importance and has a limited number of nondestructive probes used in studying a buried interface. Interfaces are technologically important for applications such as electrical properties and mechanical properties. Such applications help to motivate the fundamental research of interface properties and dynamics, which is necessary to develop the basic understanding of new types of interfaces. The role of the interface is also important since it limited length of this paper. Results will be presented in interface studies that have occurred in the last year, including some unpublished results obtained at Brookhaven over the past few months. This field is in the early stages and I expect that the full utilization of this relatively new probe can be anticipated in the next few years. 17 refs., 7 figs.

Book excerpt: In 1912 Victor Franz Hess made the revolutionary discovery that ionizing radiation is incident upon the Earth from outer space. He showed with ground-based and balloon-borne detectors that the intensity of the radiation did not change significantly between day and night. Consequently, the sun could not be regarded as the sources of this radiation and the question of its origin remained unanswered. Today, almost one hundred years later the question of the origin of the cosmic radiation still remains a mystery.Hess' discovery has given an enormous impetus to large areas of science, in particular to physics, and has played a major role in the formation of our current understanding of universal evolution. For example, the development of new fields of research such as elementary particle physics, modern astrophysics and cosmology are direct consequences of this discovery. Over the years the field of cosmic ray research has evolved in various directions: Firstly, the field of particle physics that was initiated by the discovery of many so-called elementary particles in the cosmic radiation. There is a strong trend from the accelerator physics community to reenter the field of cosmic ray physics, now under the name of astroparticle physics. Secondly, an important branch of cosmic ray physics that has rapidly evolved in conjunction with space exploration concerns the low energy portion of the cosmic ray spectrum. Thirdly, the branch of research that is concerned with the origin, acceleration and propagation of the cosmic radiation represents a great challenge for astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology. Presently very popular fields of research have rapidly evolved, such as high-energy gamma ray and neutrino astronomy. In addition, high-energy neutrino astronomy may soon initiate as a likely spin-off neutrino tomography of the Earth and thus open a unique new branch of geophysical research of the interior of the Earth. Finally, of considerable interest are the biological and medical aspects of the cosmic radiation because of it ionizing character and the inevitable irradiation to which we are exposed. This book is a reference manual for researchers and students of cosmic ray physics and associated fields and phenomena. It is not intended to be a tutorial. However, the book contains an adequate amount of background materials that its content should be useful to a broad community of scientists and professionals. The present book contains chiefly a data collection in compact form that covers the cosmic radiation in the vicinity of the Earth, in the Earth's atmosphere, at sea level and underground. Included are predominantly experimental but also theoretical data. In addition the book contains related data, definitions and important relations. The aim of this book is to offer the reader in a single volume a readily available comprehensive set of data that will save him the need of frequent time consuming literature searches.

Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] This thesis describes the first positron annihilation studies undertaken in the Atomic, Molecular and Surface Physics group in the School of Physics at the University of Western Australia (UWA). We have studied a range of systems with differing positron annihilation characteristics with the aim of characterising their defect properties, and in the process have gained insight into the interactions of positrons and positronium with materials. The project started with establishing a positron annihilation laboratory. This entailed developing procedures to produce and safely handle sealed 22Na sources, and testing positron annihilation instrumentation and experimental methods. The project evolved through collaboration with physicists, engineers, chemists, materials scientists, metallurgists and medical scientists and through a number of interesting experimental explorations of the physical phenomena affecting positron annihilation. An overview of these investigations and a thesis synopsis is given below. Chapter 1 is an introduction to positron annihilation techniques, concentrating on the interactions of positrons (and positronium) with materials, and on the spectroscopies that exploit the annihilation processes for the purpose of studying condensed matter systems. Chapter 2 describes the testing and optimisation of the positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer and Doppler broadening spectrometer. In Chapter 3, positron annihilation has been applied to study cation vacancies in oxides that exhibit ionic bonding. Such vacancies have a relative negative charge and so attract positrons, and the relatively low electron density at these sites causes enhanced positron lifetimes. Oxides considered in this work are (a) rutile, (Ti,Nb)O2, sintered in air and Ar; (b) tin oxide, (Sn,Nb)O2 sintered in air; (c) monoclinic zirconia, (Zr,Nb)O2; (d) pollucite, Cs(1-x)Al(1-x)Si(2+x)O6 and (e) Ta- and Ti-doped Zn2TiO4. All systems except (c) showed enhanced lifetimes when doping or off-stoichiometry was increased. In Chapter 4, positron annihilation has been used to study the nanoporosity of cementitious materials. The mechanical properties of these materials are heavily influenced by porosity, with the volume and size distribution of pores controlling both the strength and durability of the material...

This is a very short time on a human scale, but is long enough to enable the positron to visit an extended region of the material, and to sense the atomic and electronic structure of the environment. This idea has been successfully developed in a number of positron-based techniques of physical analysis, with resolution in energy, momentum, or position. The field of application of the positron spectroscopy extends from advanced problems of solid-state physics to industrial applications in the area of characterization of high-tech materials. This volume focuses the attention on the physics that can be learned from positron-based methods, but also frames those methods in a wider context including other experimental approaches.
