Book Studies on the Adsorptive Removal of Textile Dyes from Aqueous Solution by Activated Carbon and Activated Carbon Mno2 Nanocomposite Adsorbent Derived From Typha Angustata L

Download or read book Studies on the Adsorptive Removal of Textile Dyes from Aqueous Solution by Activated Carbon and Activated Carbon Mno2 Nanocomposite Adsorbent Derived From Typha Angustata L written by and published by True Dreamster. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics of the activated carbon and the changes in that of the modified activated carbon were verified by SEM, EDX, XRD, XPS, BET and FT-IR analyses;·The SEM studies indicate the formation of regular structure with net thin fibrils of AC; and spherical shape and smaller than 18nm in size of porous surface created in AC-MnO2-NC. The EDX studies show the presence of the elements, Carbon, Oxygen, Sodium, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Chlorine, Potassium and Calcium in AC. In case of AC-MnO2-NC in addition to these elements, the capping Manganese is proved. The XRD studies indicate the formation of short range crystalline structure and abundance of amorphous structure of the activated carbon and the modified activated carbon. The presence of Carbon and Oxygen in the activated carbon and in addition to these elements, the presence of Manganese in the modified activated carbon are also revealed by XPS studies. The BET studies show that the surface area of AC is 83.54m2/g and that for AC-MnO2-NC is 147.76m2/g. The FT-IR study suggest that the capping of MnO2 in modified activated carbon and the presence of the functional groups viz., -OH, -C=O, -C=C, -C-H, -CH2, -CH3 in the two adsorbents. The percentage of dye removal increases with increasing agitation time and adsorbent dose and decreases with increasing initial dye concentration. An increase in the time of agitation was found to be directly proportional to the amount of dye adsorbed per unit weight of the adsorbent. The adsorption of dyes from aqueous solutions attain equilibrium at different agitation time which depend on initial dye concentrations and initial pH of the dye solutions.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, grade: A, Andhra University (College of Engineering), course: Chemical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The aim of the present study is to optimize and model the removal of Two Azo and Two Anthra-Quinone Dyes from the dye effluent using Tunic of Allium cepa derived activated carbon using RSM. The relationship between dye removal efficiency and three main independent parameters including Temperature, Solution pH and Adsorbent Dosage were evaluated by applying central composite design (CCD) and Box–Behnken design (BBD). Water Has the high importance in industrial ad domestic areas, Where Industries consume a lot of water and releases highly toxic effluents which are really harmful to the environment containing the toxic metals like Cr, Cd, Pd, Ti, Zn and many harmful dyes etc. Textile effluent dyes are targeted I the present work which exist in two forms (i) True Color (ii) Apparent color. There are various dyes used in the textile industries among which majority of dye stuffs are majorly based on azodyes which are used to dye cotton fabric and anthra-quinone dyes. Azo Dyes: Determination of azo dyes are categorized by the presence of (-N=N-) azo group as chromophore. Azo dyes are generally found in synthetic dye classes. Previously azo dyes were applied to cotton which involves the reactions with chemical components which reacts to form the dye into the fiber or on the surface. Primuline red and Para red fall into this group of azo dyes introduces in 1880’s.Azo dyes are mostly used in cotton fabric. Anthra- quinone dyes: Determination of anthra- quinone dyes are characterized by carbonyl group (>C=O) as chromophore. Other names of anthra- quinone are anthrachinon, dioxoanthracene and different trade names like Corbit and Hoelite. The dyes like Saffranin, indigo carmine, Alizarin, Red S, Crystal violet were chosen here from the textile effluent for the removal. The source materials used here are natural powders namely Tunic of Allium cepa and its activated carbon.

Book Factors Influencing Textile Dye Absorption of Dylon Blue Dye on Activated Carbon

Download or read book Factors Influencing Textile Dye Absorption of Dylon Blue Dye on Activated Carbon written by Rawan A. Alharbi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research is dedicated to studies of activated carbons performance in the wastewater process of dye removal. The experiment was performed to assess the efficiency of the commercial activated carbons (Fl00, F600, F820, SGL 8x30, CAL, AP4-60, OLC12x30) in adsorption process for Dylon Blue Dye. The effect of type of activated carbon, dye, salinity, pH and contact time, were studied. Minitab software was used to design an experiment to collectively evaluate these factors. The experiments were performed by measuring the absorbances of the solutions before and after contact with the activated carbon. The absorbance was evaluated with UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The adsorption of the dye took place on all the studied activated carbon samples, thus the dye concentration reduced comparing to the initial solutions. Results of the study indicated that pH and salinity did not have any significant effect of the adsorption of the dye on the carbon. However, type of carbon and contact time were shown to influence adsorption significantly. Lack of effect of pH and salinity in current study contrasts finding reported in other studies --

Book Decolorization of Synthetic Dye Solutions by Using Basaltic Tephra and Clinoptilolite

Download or read book Decolorization of Synthetic Dye Solutions by Using Basaltic Tephra and Clinoptilolite written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discharge of colored effluents without decoloration originated from textile industries may cause serious problems in the receiving environments. In this study, natural materials that are basaltic tephra and clinoptilolite were used to remove various dyestuffs used in the textile industry. Those materials are cheap and available in large quantities in Turkey. The investigation of adsorption of basic, acidic and reactive dyes on these materials is the objective of this study. During preliminary experiments it was seen that adsorption equilibrium was reached in about 2 days. In adsorption experiments, in order to obtain adsorption isotherms, a fixed amount of adsorbent and 100 mL dye solutions of different concentrations were placed in glass bottles which were shaken at 200 rpm and 25"2oC for 2 days. Then, samples were filtered and the equilibrium concentrations of dyestuffs in the solutions were determined by using spectrophotometer at appropriate wavelength corresponding to the maximum absorbency. After equilibrium concentrations of the solutions were obtained, Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm constants were calculated for the adsorbents used in this study. The removal efficiencies for cationic basic dyes are higher than those for anionic acidic and reactive dyes with the natural materials. Therefore, modification of surface properties of natural materials with a cationic surfactant was considered to increase the removal efficiencies of those for anionic dyes. After modification of the surface properties, adsorption capacities of adsorbents for anionic dyes were higher than those of natural materials. Finally, the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for the same dyes was determined to compare with that of natural and modified materials. The results showed that the adsorption of dyes on adsorbents used in this study fitted nicely the Langmuir Isotherm Equations.

Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to provide a systematic presentation of theories concerning the adsorption of metal ions from aqueous solutions onto surfaces of natural and synthetic substances and to outline methods and procedures to estimate the extent and progress ofadsorption. As heavy metals and the problems associated with their transport and distribution are of serious concern to human health and the environment, the materials presented in this volume have both theoretical and practical significance. In writing this monograph, one ofour goals was to prepare a book useful to environmental workers and practicing engineers. For this reason, our presentation relies heavily on concepts commonly used in the environmental engineering literature. In fact, the volume was prepared for readers with a basic understanding of environmental engineering principles and some knowledge of adsorption processes. No prior familiarity with the ionic solute adsorption at solid-solution interfaces is assumed. Instead, introduction of the necessary background information was included. Generally speaking, metal ion adsorption may be studied in terms of three distinct but interrelated phenomena: surface ionization, complex formation, and the formation and presence of an electrostatic double layer adjacent to adsorbent surfaces. Analyses of these phenomena with various degrees of sophistication are xviii ADSORPTION OF METAL IONS FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS presented, and their various combinations yield different models that describe metal ion adsorption.

Book Removal of Emerging Contaminants Through Microbial Processes

Download or read book Removal of Emerging Contaminants Through Microbial Processes written by Maulin P Shah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of organic pollutants found in wastewater affect urban surface waters. Traditional wastewater management technologies focus on the removal of suspended solids, nutrients and bacteria, however, new pollutants such as synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals are often not monitored in the environment despite having the potential to enter the environment and cause adverse ecological and human health effects. Collectively referred to as "emerging contaminants," they are mostly derived from domestic activities and occur in trace concentrations ranging from pico to micrograms per liter. Environmental contaminants are resistant to conventional wastewater treatment processes and most of them remain unaffected, causing contamination of receiving water. This in turn leads to the need for advanced wastewater treatment processes capable of removing environmental contaminants to ensure safe fresh water sources. This book provides an up-to-date overview of the current bioremediation strategies, including their limitations, challenges and their potential application to remove environmental pollutants. It also introduces the latest trends and advances in environmental bioremediation, and presents the state-of-the-art in biological and chemical wastewater treatment processes. As such, it will appeal to researchers and policy-makers, as well as undergraduate and graduate environmental sciences students.

Book Algae and Environmental Sustainability

Download or read book Algae and Environmental Sustainability written by Bhaskar Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the dynamic role of algae in a sustainable environment. Two major aspects, namely bioenergy and bioremediation, have been elaborated in various chapter contributed by scientists and teachers from different geographical areas throughout the world. Algal biofuels is an emerging area of equal interest to researchers, industries, and policy makers working or focusing on alternative (i.e. renewable) fuels. Algae have been an area of interest due to their wide range of applications. Over the last 5 decades, eukaryotic algae have been used in the aquaculture industry as feed for invertebrates, providing a rich source of antioxidants, dietary fiber, minerals and protein. More recently, there has been a focus on the use of algal biomass in the development of alternative fuels. The extraction of oil from algae has been widely explored as a much more viable feedstock than plant-based oils in large-scale fuel production. using algae as feedstock has the advantages that it doesn’t require arable land and that wastewater can be used as a source of nutrients in their culture. The multifunctional approach of algae includes pollution remediation, carbon sequestration, biofuels production, and delivery of value-added products. However, there are still some obstacles that need to be overcome to make their use as potential feedstock for biofuels techno-economically feasible. In order to maintain the sustainability aspect of algal biofuels, various aspects have to be studied and critically analyzed to assess the long-term sustainability of algal derived biofuels. This book discusses the role of algae as a promising future feedstock for biofuels. They are known to sequester carbon in much larger amounts than plants and as such the book also describes their phycoremediation potential for conventional as well as emerging contaminants. It describes the role of anaerobic digestion in algal biorefineries; bioreactions and process parameters; biogas recovery and reuse. The role of algal biofilm based technology in wastewater treatment and transforming waste into bio-products is discussed, and remediation of sewage water through algae is assessed. The book also describes the production of biohydrogen, bio-oil, biodiesel; and the major bottlenecks in their usage. The emerging characterization techniques of these biofuels (bio-oil and biodiesel) are described, as are the decolorizing potential of algae and the genetic engineering techniques that could enhance the production of lipids in algae. Other aspects of the book include the role of remote sensing technology in the monitoring of algae and a life cycle assessment of algal biofuels.
