Download or read book Accounting for brands according to US GAAP and IAS written by Stefan Greite and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2004-11-30 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In today s economy wealth and growth are mainly driven by intangible assets. In a knowledge-based economy the success of an enterprise is driven by intangible factors, while control over physical resources becomes progressively unimportant. In most successful companies, brands and other intangible assets outperform physical assets by a notable margin. Brands, the most valuable and sustainable corporate assets, and trademarks play an especially important role. This paper aims to show how to account for brand names in financial statements according to US-GAAP and IAS. The objectives of this paper are to present and discuss the disclosure of brands as intangible assets, in the balance sheet according to US-GAAP and IAS. Therefore, the recognition criteria of both accounting regulations will be examined. The initial and subsequent measurement techniques will be discussed, and problems in this field will be exposed and criticized. The paper also aims to show criticisms of the current regulations and to discuss possible future developments. New ideas and solutions for the problems arising with the disclosure and measurement of intangible assets and brands will be presented and discussed in Chapter four. Chapter five will include a summary of the findings and a critical statement about the problems discussed in this paper. Book A Real Effects Perspective to Accounting Measurement and Disclosure

Download or read book A Real Effects Perspective to Accounting Measurement and Disclosure written by Chandra Kanodia and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounting measurement and disclosure rules have a significant impact on the real decisions that firms make. In this essay, we provide an analytical framework to illustrate how such real effects arise. Using this framework, we examine three specific measurement issues that remain controversial: (1) How does the measurement of investments affect a firm's investment efficiency? (2) How does the measurement and disclosure of a firm's derivative transactions affect a firm's choice of intrinsic risk exposures, risk management strategy, and the incentive to speculate? (3) How could marking-to-market the asset portfolios of financial institutions generate procyclical real effects? We draw upon these real effects studies to generate sharper and novel insights that we believe are useful not only for the development of accounting standards, but also for guiding future empirical research.

Book Fair Value Accounting for Financial Instruments

Download or read book Fair Value Accounting for Financial Instruments written by Wayne R. Landsman and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I identify issues that bank regulators need to consider if fair value accounting is used for determining bank regulatory capital and when making regulatory decisions. In financial reporting, US and international accounting standard setters have issued several disclosure and measurement and recognition standards for financial instruments and all indications are that both standard setters will mandate recognition of all financial instruments at fair value. To help identify important issues for bank regulators, I briefly review capital market studies that examine the usefulness of fair value accounting to investors, and discuss marking-to-market implementation issues of determining financial instruments' fair values. In doing so, I identify several key issues. First, regulators need to consider how to let managers reveal private information in their fair value estimates while minimising strategic manipulation of model inputs to manage income and regulatory capital. Second, regulators need to consider how best to minimise measurement error in fair values to maximise their usefulness to investors and creditors when making investment decisions, and to ensure bank managers have incentives to select investments that maximise economic efficiency of the banking system. Third, cross-country institutional differences are likely to play an important role in determining the effectiveness of using mark-to-market accounting for financial reporting and bank regulation.

Book Accounting for Financial Instruments

Download or read book Accounting for Financial Instruments written by Karsten Eisenschmidt and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounting for financial instruments according to international standards is one of the most sophisticated tasks for standard setters and preparers. Existing empirical research on this topic is rare and mainly concentrates on industry or national situations. Therefore, further research and especially empirical studies are needed to get a better understanding of the recognition, measurement and disclosure of financial instruments. This paper provides current evidence on the practical relevance of financial assets and liabilities in European publicly traded companies listed in the STOXX Europe 600 for the fiscal year 2015. A content analysis shows that financial assets have a stronger importance in the financial industry as in the non-financial industry. We can also demonstrate that a fair value measurement for financial assets and liabilities is only important for the financial industry, while the average usage in the non-financial industry is marginal. Moreover, the critical level 3 fair value, which is based on unobservable data, has only a very low importance in both industries. The often mentioned critique that fair values are not objective and not verifiable is, therefore, unfounded. Surprisingly, we identified substantial problems in the disclosure quality of financial assets and liabilities' data in the notes which cannot be explained by company specific variables. Especially this finding demonstrates that the comparability of financial statements is not always given and does not improve the usefulness for the various stakeholders and their investment decisions. Researchers are invited to conduct additional studies for other periods and samples which can be helpful to gain further insights as well as to improve the current disclosure shortcomings.
