Download or read book Advances in Disease Vector Research written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series explores how vectors (carriers of disease agents, such as insects) acquire, carry and subsequently transmit pathogens to hosts. It covers the spectrum of vectors, including carriers of plant pathogens as well as medically related pathogens. The Chapters in Volume 7 include: 1. "K. Gibb, J.W. Randles: " Transmission of velvet tobacco mottle virus and related viruses by the mirid Cyrto- peltis nicotianae. 2. "N. Carter, R. Harrington: " Factors influencing aphid population dynamics and behavior and the consequences for virus spread. 3. "R.H. Bagnall: " Cyclic epidemics of aphid-borne potato viruses in Northern seed-potato-growing areas. 4. "C.J. Andrews, R.C. Sinha: " Interactions between barley yellow dwarf virus infection and winter-stress tolerance in cereals. 5. "J.R. DeLoach, G. " "Spates: " Artificial diets for blood feeding insects: a review. 6. "I. Maudlin: " Transmission of African trypanosomiasis: interactions among Tsetse immune system, symbionts, and parasites. 7. "C. Chastel, I. Humphery-Smith: " Mosquito spiroplasmas. The first four chapters cover topics in plant virus transmission by insects. The final three chapters focus on human and animal disease associations with bollid-feeding flies.

Download or read book Plant Resistance to Viruses written by David Evered and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about the environmental consequences of the widespread use of pesticides has increased, and evidence of pesticide-resistant virus vectors have continued to emerge. This volume presents a timely survey of the mechanisms of plant resistance and examines current developments in breeding for resistance, with particular emphasis on advances in genetic engineering which allow for the incorporation of viral genetic material into plants. Discusses the mechanisms of innate resistance in strains of tobacco, tomato, and cowpea; various aspects of induced resistance, including the characterization and roles of the pathogenesis-related proteins; antiviral substances and their comparison with interferon; and cross-protection between plant virus strains. Also presents several papers which evaluate the status of genetic engineering as it relates to breeding resistant plants. Among these are discussions of the potential use of plant viruses as gene vectors, gene coding for viral coat protein, satellite RNA, and antisense RNA, and practical issues such as the durability of resistant crop plants in the field.

Download or read book Aphids as Crop Pests 2nd Edition written by Helmut F van Emden and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids are among the major global pest groups, causing serious economic damage to many food and commodity crops in most parts of the world. This revision and update of the well-received first edition published ten years ago reflects the expansion of research in genomics, endosymbionts and semiochemicals, as well as the shift from control of aphids with insecticides to a more integrated approach imposed by increasing resistance in the aphids and government restrictions on pesticides. The book remains a comprehensive and up-to-date reference work on the biology of aphids, the various methods of controlling them and the progress of integrated pest management as illustrated by ten case histories.
Download or read book Lockhart and Wiseman s Crop Husbandry Including Grassland written by Steve Finch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-05 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1966, Lockhart and Wiseman's Crop Husbandry Including Grassland has established itself as the standard crop husbandry text for students and practitioners alike. Radically revised and expanded, and with a new team of authors, the eighth edition confirms and extends its reputation.Part one looks at the basic conditions for crop growth with chapters on plant structure and growth, soil analysis and management, and the use of fertilisers and manures. There is also a new chapter on the influence of climate and weather. Part two surveys general aspects of crop husbandry. As well as a discussion of cropping techniques, there are new chapters on the important new areas of integrated crop management and organic crop husbandry, as well as discussion of seed selection and production. Part three then looks at how these general techniques are applied to particular crops, with chapters on cereals, root crops, fresh harvested crops, forage crops and combinable break crops. Part four considers the use of grassland with chapters on classification, sowing and management, grazing and conservation for winter feed.Lockhart and Wiseman's Crop Husbandry Including Grassland remains the standard text for general agriculture, land management and agri-business courses, and is a valuable practical reference for the farming industry. - The eighth edition has been widely expanded and remains the standard text for general agriculture, land management and agri-business courses - Includes new chapters on cropping techniques, integrated crop management and quality assurance, seed production and selection and the influence of climate - Discusses basic conditions for crop growth, how techniques are applied to particular crops, the influence of weather and the use of grassland
