Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Review of the original edition: This is an inspiring textbook for students who know the theory of functions of real and complex variables and wish further knowledge of mathematical analysis. There are no problems displayed and labelled “problems,” but one who follows all of the arguments and calculations of the text will find use for his ingenuity and pencil. The book deals with interesting and important problems and topics in many fields of mathematical analysis, to an extent very much greater than that indicated by the titles of the chapters. It is, of course, an indispensable handbook for those interested in divergent series. It assembles a considerable part of the theory of divergent series, which has previously existed only in periodical literature. Hardy has greatly simplified and improved many theories, theorems and proofs. In addition, numerous acknowledgements show that the book incorporates many previously unpublished results and improvements of old results, communicated to Hardy by his colleagues and by others interested in the book. —Mathematical Reviews

Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book Creativity and Divergent Thinking

Download or read book Creativity and Divergent Thinking written by John Baer and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do general-purpose creative-thinking skills -- skills like divergent thinking, which is touted as an important component of creative thinking no matter what the task domain -- actually make much of a contribution to creative performance? Although much recent research argues against such domain-transcending skills -- including several new studies reported in this book -- the appeal of such general skills remains strong, probably because of the theoretical economy and power such skills would provide. Divergent thinking, in particular, has had an incredible staying power. Despite its many flaws, divergent thinking remains the most frequently used indicator of creativity in both creativity research and educational practice, and divergent thinking theory has a strong hold on everyday conceptions of what it means to be creative. Reviewing the available research on divergent thinking, this book presents a framework for understanding other major theories of creativity, including Mednick's associative theory and a possible connectionist approach of creativity. It reports a series of studies (including the study that won APA's 1992 Berlyne Prize) that demonstrate the absence of effects of general creative-thinking skills across a range of creativity-relevant tasks, but indicate that training in divergent thinking does in fact improve creative performance across diverse task domains. The book then ties these findings together with a multi-level theory, in which a task-specific approach to creativity is strengthened by recasting some divergent-thinking concepts into domain- and task-specific forms. This book fills the gap between divergent-thinking theory and more recent, modular conceptions of creativity. Rather than advocate that we simply discard divergent thinking -- an approach that hasn't worked, or at least hasn't happened, because of many attacks on its validity and usefulness -- this book shows how to separate what is useful in divergent-thinking theory and practice from what is not. It shows that divergent-thinking training can be valuable, although often not for the reasons trainers think it works. And it offers specific suggestions about the kinds of creativity research most needed today.

Book Studies on Divergent Series and Summability

Download or read book Studies on Divergent Series and Summability written by Walter Burton Ford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on Divergent Series and Summability, Vol. 2 During the academic year1908-9 the author was privileged to give as a part of his work at the University of Michigan a course of lectures on infinite series with especial reference in the second semester to divergent series - a subject which, despite the uncertain value so long attached to it, seemed clearly to be coming into increasing prominence and importance in mathematical analysis. Little was accomplished, however, as regards divergent series beyond the merest beginning; yet this was sufficient to awaken a desire to continue farther and this in turn resulted in a course being given throughout the whole of the following year devoted entirely to divergent series and the related topic of summability. But this year also closed with much less ground satisfactorily covered than had been expected, unforeseen difficulties having arisen from time to time, some due to the inherent complexities of the subject in hand and others to the somewhat hastily conceived and hence unsatisfactory state in which much of the related literature was found to be. Thus the course still seemed altogether incomplete. It was therefore decided to continue it once more throughout the following year, 1910-11, and indeed for a like reason it was finally continued throughout 1911-12. As the lectures and class-room discussions progressed, permanent notes were kept in the hope that the whole might possibly pass through the press at some future time and appear in book form a hope which, after various delays during which the original notes have been considerably supplemented, now reaches its realization in the appearance of the present volume. In its final form it certainly presents a large mass of detail and is doubtless open to criticism in many respects, but it does not seem advisable to attempt any further defence for it than is contained in the remaining sections of this preface wherein, after certain generalities, the content and motive of the various chapters are discussed in some detail. Speaking roughly, the study of divergent series, at least as the author has come to conceive of it, may be divided into two parts, the one concerning the so-called asymptotic series and the other the theory of summability.
