Book Studies on Amphipod Crustaceans of the Northeastern Pacific Region

Download or read book Studies on Amphipod Crustaceans of the Northeastern Pacific Region written by John Joseph Dickinson and published by National Museums of Canada, National Museum of Natural Sciences. This book was released on 1982 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study on the systematics and distributional ecology of Ampelisca in the region between the Bering Sea and Oregon is based mainly on collections in the National Museum of Natural Sciences. The study describes nine species whose range is extended from Oregon to northern British Columbia or southeast Alaska and records three species near the St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. A new species from northern B.C. waters is described and a bathymetric species is elevated to species rank. Two geographic variants are elevated to separate species. A key to the genus for the northeast Pacific region is included and a cluster analysis is performed on the northeast Pacific Ampelisca fauna.

Book The Amphipod Superfamily Talitroidea in the Northeastern Pacific Region

Download or read book The Amphipod Superfamily Talitroidea in the Northeastern Pacific Region written by E. L. Bousfield and published by National Museums of Canada, National Museum of Natural Sciences. This book was released on 1982 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on material obtained by field expeditions of the National Museums of Canada since 1955, and from other sources, this study provides new information on the distribution and ecology of semiterrestrial and terrestrial amphipods of the North American Pacific and adjacent coastal marine regions. It revises the component species within formal new generic and informal systematics-ecological groups, based mainly on newly recognized taxonomic characters and employing numerical taxonomic methodology. The study also outlines primary facts that contribute to the anomalous regional combination of primitive and advanced morphological types within beach fleas and sandhoppers, and the total absence of native terrestrial species in the North American Pacific coast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the classic works of marine biology, a favorite for generations, has now been completely revised and expanded. Between Pacific Tides is a book for all who find the shore a place of excitement, wonder, and beauty, and an unsurpassed introductory text for both students and professionals. This book describes the habits and habitats of the animals that live in one of the most prolific life zones of the world--the rocky shores and tide pools of the Pacific Coast of the United States. The intricate and fascinating life processes of these creatures are described with affectionate care. The animals are grouped according to their most characteristic habitat, whether rocky shore, sandy beach, mud flat, or wharf piling, and the authors discuss their life history, physiology, and community relations, and the influence of wave shock and shifting tide level. Though the basic purpose and structure--and much of the text--of the book remain the same, content has been increased by about 20 percent; a multitude of changes and additios has been made in the text; the Annotated Systematic Index and General Bibliography have been updated and greatly expanded (now almost 2,300 entries); more than 200 new photographs and drawings have been incorporated; and an entirely new chapter has been added--a topical presentation of the several factors influencing distribution of organisms along the shore. This edition also includes John Steinbeck's Foreword to the 1948 edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Edition of The Light and Smith Manual continues a sixty-five-year tradition of providing to both students and professionals an indispensable, comprehensive, and authoritative guide to Pacific coast marine invertebrates of coastal waters, rocky shores, sandy beaches, tidal mud flats, salt marshes, and floats and docks. This classic and unparalleled reference has been newly expanded to include all common and many rare species from Point Conception, California, to the Columbia River, one of the most studied areas in the world for marine invertebrates. In addition, although focused on the central and northern California and Oregon coasts, this encyclopedic source is useful for anyone working in North American coastal ecosystems, from Alaska to Mexico. More than one hundred scholars have provided new keys, illustrations, and annotated species lists for over 3,500 species of intertidal and many shallow water marine organisms ranging from protozoans to sea squirts. This expanded volume covers sponges, sea anemones, hydroids, jellyfish, flatworms, polychaetes, amphipods, crabs, insects, snails, clams, chitons, and scores of other important groups. The Fourth Edition also features introductory chapters on marine habitats and biogeography, interstitial marine life, and intertidal parasites, as well as expanded treatments of common planktonic organisms likely to be encountered in near-to-shore shallow waters.
