Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of the Medical and Surgical Care of Industrial WorkersOne hundred and seventy industrial establishments, variously located in the Eastern and Middle Western States, were visited dur ing the first six months of 1918 for the purpose of studying their medical and surgical facilities for the care of workers. The facilities in 155 establishments lend themselves to definite analyses, the other 15 being the medical administrative organizations of large corpora tions. The report which follows is based upon analyses of these data and also upon observations and Opinions obtained in these visits. In it are considered the personnel, equipment, activities, methods, and record forms necessary to the care and relief of sick and injured industrial workers and the prevention of sickness among them. Existing conditions relative to the organization, manage ment, and operation of industrial medical departments are described, and standards or ideals which have been suggested by analyses and observations are proposed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Industrial Medicine and Surgery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Medicine and Surgery Classic Reprint written by Harry Edgar Mock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Medicine and Surgery IN presenting this book to the medical profession, and to those laymen interested in the subject, I am quite conscious of the fact that it is a deviation from the usual character of a text-book on medicine or surgery. Instead of dealing with the pathology, diagnosis and treatment of specific diseases or the individualistic practice of medicine, I have endeavored to set forth the reasons for, and the methods of a form of group medicine which has stood the test of years, and proven its practicability in many of the large industries of the country. The conservation of the lives and limbs of the working people and the reclamation of those disabled in the daily strife have become a definite program in the industrial world. The humanizing influence of this work has caused many an employer to consider other means of contributing to the health, comfort and contentment of his working force. Wherever these principles have been adopted, the industry has been rewarded by greater efficiency among its employees, with a corresponding increase in production. With the growth of this form of medicine the field has extended into the living and home conditions of the working forces, gradually resulting in closer co-operation with the public health authorities. In fact, it has become a vital factor in public health. To - day the achievements of industrial medicine and surgery are one of the strongest arguments in favor of a national health program. Book A Manual of Surgical Treatment Vol 1 of 6 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Surgical Treatment Vol 1 of 6 Classic Reprint written by William Watson Cheyne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Surgical Treatment, Vol. 1 of 6 The subject of Surgery has now become so extensive that any work attempting to deal with it in an exhaustive manner must necessarily be so large and unwieldy as to be suitable only for purposes of reference, or for the use of those who devote themselves exclusively to its practice. In any text-book of convenient size the information given in certain branches of the subject must therefore be considerably condensed, and, as the first essential for the beginner is to have the fullest knowledge of the nature and characters of the diseases that he has to study, special stress is usually laid upon pathology, symptomatology, and diagnosis. For the practitioner, on the other hand, who is already acquainted with these points, the great essential is full and detailed information as to the best methods of treatment. We have ourselves frequently experienced the want of detailed informa tion, especially. As regards the after-treatment'of our cases, and have had to learn the best methods of procedure from experience. Nothing can of course replace experience, but it is often of the greatest advantage to have a detailed record of that of others upon which to base one's work. It is this want that the present work is intended to supply. We have tried to put ourselves in the place of those who have to treat a given case for the first time, and we have endeavoured to supply them with details as to treatment from the commencement to the termination of the illness. We have assumed that the reader is familiar with the nature and diagnosis of the disease, and we only refer to the pathology and symptoms in so far as it is necessary to render intelligible the principles on which the treatment is based, and the various stages of the disease to which each particular method is applicable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood's Medical and Surgical Monographs, Vol. 2 Through a careful statement of the etiology and the pathological anatomy of the subjects with which we are con cerned, I have endeavored to expose clearly the methods of treatment, and to simplify early diagnosis. In the choice of illustrations (and it seemed to me essential to select a large number) I have aimed at picturing the slighter as well as the more uncommon grades of deformities, and at representing apparatus of the most varied nature, which the physician must order even as he does the drugs in his recipe, that is to say he must give the mechanic explicit directions, and herein the illustrations will be of much service. I trust that the following exposition of orthopedic practice and methods may excite the interest of physicians in this branch of medicine, for orthopedics may be looked upon as a step-child of the other medical branches, and I hope it may obtain for orthopedic methods more general recognition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine study Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001) recommended that an interdisciplinary summit be held to further reform of health professions education in order to enhance quality and patient safety. Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality is the follow up to that summit, held in June 2002, where 150 participants across disciplines and occupations developed ideas about how to integrate a core set of competencies into health professions education. These core competencies include patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. This book recommends a mix of approaches to health education improvement, including those related to oversight processes, the training environment, research, public reporting, and leadership. Educators, administrators, and health professionals can use this book to help achieve an approach to education that better prepares clinicians to meet both the needs of patients and the requirements of a changing health care system.
