This book was released on 1974 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the present work has been to characterize the nature of the primary exhaust from fuel-rich motors containing boron, and to study its ignition and combustion characteristics, especially as compared to the known information for pure boron. Section II of the present report describes (a) the rocket-motor firing program in which the condensed exhaust (CE) from two different composite ammonium perchlorate propellants was collected, and (b) the results of thermodynamic computations for these formulations. Sections III and IV contain the results of the physical (microscopy, density measurement) and chemical analyses of the CE. Section V deals with combustion of the CE. Finally, Sections VI and VII report the results of modeling studies describing the ignition of single boron particles in hot gas streams and propagation of flames in boron-oxygen-nitrogen dust clouds.

Book Combustion Studies of Fuel Rich Propellants

Download or read book Combustion Studies of Fuel Rich Propellants written by Merrill K. King and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignition and combustion studies of boron, and highly magnesium-loaded formulations for air-agumented rocket applications are reported. Ignition and combustion characteristics of pure boron and of boron-containing particulate ejecta from highly-boron-loaded fuel-rich primary motor formulations were studied. Physical and chemical characteristics of the motor ejecta were studied and their ignition/combustion characteristics were compared to those for pure boron. The minimum surrounding temperature for ignition for the two materials was nearly identical but the ignition delay time was considerably lower for the motor ejecta material. Burning times for comparable size particles of each type were equal within experimental error. In the size range of interest (2 to 10 equal micron diameter), the burning was observed to be characterized by a d1-law (kinetics-limited combustion). Thermodynamic screening of possible highly-magnesium-loaded fuel-rich propellants was carried out and candidate castable and pressed formulations for air-augmented rocket applications were defined. Several were characterized in terms of their safety and ballistic properties. Experiments were performed to identify the characteristics of the exhaust products from combustion in the absence of air. These experiments indicated that considerable magnesium, with significant fraction of it in the gas phase is produced. The presence of such quantities of magnesium gas should result in excellent combustion of the product streams emanating from these propellants with air in a ramburner. Nozzle plugging and residue formation are possible problem areas.

Book Basic Metal Ignition and Combustion Studies Relating to Air augmented Combustion

Download or read book Basic Metal Ignition and Combustion Studies Relating to Air augmented Combustion written by Clarence L. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was performed to investigate the ignition and combustion characteristics of boron particles in a two chambered test system. Such an apparatus was used in recognition of the results of an examination of the experimental unknowns associated with the ignition and combustion of metal particles under the conditions characteristic of an augmented system. The results indicated it was essential to separate the mechanisms of the heat up phase from those of the ignition and combustion phase in the particles combustion history. The theoretical analyses, experimental equipment, operational techniques and experimental results obtained in this investigation are described.

Book The Ignition and Combustion of Single Boron Particles in Air at Ambient Pressure

Download or read book The Ignition and Combustion of Single Boron Particles in Air at Ambient Pressure written by William H. McLain and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical studies are reported which provide basic information concerning the ignition and combustion processes of amorphous, crystalline, gamma-irradiated, and LiF coated single boron particles. All studies were conducted at ambient pressure with particles or particle agglomerates between 30 and 50 microns in diameter. Boron particles were suspended in a levitation cell and ignited using a pulsed neodymium-doped laser. The burning processes were recorded in either self-light or shadowgraph. Within experimental error the burning time for amorphous boron and spherodized crystalline boron are the same indicating that the initial particle character has a minor effect on the liquid droplet burning time combustion process. Analytical studies were made concerning the unsteady heating of boron particles subjected to high flux rates. The theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics is explored and it is demonstrated that engineering calculations based on the equilibrium hypothesis may predict mass flux rates 50 to 100 percent in error. Book Fuel Rich Solid Propellant Boron Combustion

Download or read book Fuel Rich Solid Propellant Boron Combustion written by Merrill K. King and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough critical assessment of the state-of-the-art of boron fuel ignition/combustion has been carried out and areas of deficiency defined. An improved boron single particle ignition model treating the effects of water vapor on particle ignition has been developed. Boron single particle combustion models which include the effects of finite kinetics and correctly predict transition from a second-order dependence of burn time on particle size to a first-order dependence for small particle sizes have also been developed. Considerable progress has been made in developing an experimental apparatus and diagnostics for studying single boron particle ignition and combustion processes for small (less than 25 micron diameter) particles and for studying the kinetics of the critical (for ignition) liquid boric oxide-water vapor reaction. In addition, a test bed for study of the processes involved in burning of compacted boron solid fuel grains in a hot air crossflow has been designed and is under construction. Finally, a simplified model of processes occurring in a perfectly stirred reactor with a cloud of boron particles as the fuel has been developed and is being used in design of a test apparatus for study of boron dust cloud ignition and combustion. Book Combustion of Boron Particles at Elevated Pressures

Download or read book Combustion of Boron Particles at Elevated Pressures written by Andrej Macek and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion of single boron particles, about 75 microns in diameter, from a crystalline powder sample has been studied. Particles were ignited by being dropped through a focused laser beam in several oxidizing gases over a range of pressures. In pure oxygen, in air, and in O2/Ar(20/80), particles were merely preheated to a temperature about 2000K; ignition took place spontaneously after a measurable induction period. Quantitative values of both the induction period and the subsequent self-sustained combustion period are listed. It was shown that the classical theory of ignition and combustion can account for all three observed burning modes: metastable surface reaction during the preignition period, rapid self-sustained diffusion-combustion, and decaying combustion. Previously reported reaction-rate and ignition-limit data were used for quantitative estimates of parameters pertaining to the three regimes. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd International Conference on Space Engineering took place May 7-10, 1969, at Venice, Italy, under the organization of the Centro Studi Trasporti Missilistici and the Association pour l'Etude et la Recherche Astronautique et Cosmique. Its purpose was to bring together those interested in the technological development of space components, to exchange information by the presentation of papers and to discuss present problems and future trends, and to this end forty-eight papers were presented by distinguished experts from all over the world. The papers were selected from as wide a background as possible, approximately an equal number coming from the academic and research establishments as from industry. The principal criterion for their selection was that they should contribute to the knowledge of Space Engineering, and have application either to the improve ment of current technologies or to the design of more advanced systems for the future. Six pertinent sessions were planned which covered the major areas of interest: (1) Structures and Materials, where three important papers were presented; (2) Guidance and Control Systems, in which six valuable papers were presented, in cluding problems of controlling space ships, details of the inertial guidance system of the ELDO launch vehicle, the attitude control system of the "Europa 2"; (3) Propellants and Combustion, where eleven papers described recent work on solid and liquid rocket engines, advanced fuels and oxidizers, effects of additives, propellant injection, propellant expulsion techniques; (4) Propulsion, in which session ten papers
