Book Sea Water Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion for Next Generation Undersea Vehicles

Download or read book Sea Water Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion for Next Generation Undersea Vehicles written by T. F. Lin and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three tasks were performed in this report period. Their individual abstracts are summarized as follows: (I) Thruster Performance Modelings - The purpose of this work is to analyze underwater vehicle propulsion by applying Lorentz forces to the surrounding sea water. While this propulsion concept involves two different schemes, i.e. the external field method and the internal duct-type method, the current analysis focuses on the internal thruster scheme due to the space limitations and speed considerations. The theories of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pump jet propulsion are discussed. A so-called 'dual control volume' analysis to model the MHD thruster, and calculations of vehicle velocity and power efficiency are presented. (II) Sea Water Conductivity Enhancement - This work discusses the mechanisms of enhancing the electric conductivity of sea water. The direct impact of conductivity enhancement of sea water is the improvement of propulsion performances of marine vehicles that use the magnetohydrodynamic thrusts of sea water. The performance improvement can be in energy efficiency or in vehicle speed. Injection of strong electrolytes (acids or bases) into the main sea water flow in the MHD channel appeared to be the most logical way of achieving the purpose. (III) Status of Current Superconductivity Works - A survey of recent research in both low -T sub c and high -T sub c superconductivities is provided. It is generally true that high -T sub c superconductors carry critical current densities several orders of magnitude less than those of low -T sub c ones. (aw).

Book Feasibility of MHD Submarine Propulsion Phase II MHD Propulsion

Download or read book Feasibility of MHD Submarine Propulsion Phase II MHD Propulsion written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work performed during Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the collaborative research program established between Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (NNS). Phase I of the program focused on the development of computer models for Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) propulsion. Phase 2 focused on the experimental validation of the thruster performance models and the identification, through testing, of any phenomena which may impact the attractiveness of this propulsion system for shipboard applications. The report discusses in detail the work performed in Phase 2 of the program. In Phase 2, a two Tesla test facility was designed, built, and operated. The facility test loop, its components, and their design are presented. The test matrix and its rationale are discussed. Representative experimental results of the test program are presented, and are compared to computer model predictions. In general, the results of the tests and their comparison with the predictions indicate that thephenomena affecting the performance of MHD seawater thrusters are well understood and can be accurately predicted with the developed thruster computer models.

Book Biological Propulsion Systems for Ships and Underwater Vehicles

Download or read book Biological Propulsion Systems for Ships and Underwater Vehicles written by Naga Praveen Babu Mannam and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulations and performance requirements related to technology development on all modes of transport vehicles for reduced pollution and environmental impact have become more stringent. Greening of transport system has been recognized as an important factor concerning global warming and climate change. Thus environment-friendly technical solutions offering a reduction of noxious exhaust gases are in demand. Aquatic animals have good swimming and maneuvering capabilities and these observations have motivated research on fish-like propulsion for marine vehicles. The fish fin movements, used by fish for their locomotion and positioning, are being replicated by researchers as flapping foils to mimic the biological system. Studies show that flapping foil propulsion systems are generally more efficient than a conventional screw propeller, which suffers efficiency losses due to wake. The flapping foil propulsors usually do not cavitate and have less wake velocity variation. These aspects result in the reduction of noise and vibration. The present study will cover an overview of aquatic propulsion systems, numerical simulations of flapping foils and ship model self-propulsion experiments performed using flapping foil system, particle image velocimetry (PIV), and digital fluoroscopy studies conducted on fish locomotion. Studies performed on underwater and surface vehicles fitted with flapping fins will also be presented.
