Book Studies in Low Energy Nucler Science

Download or read book Studies in Low Energy Nucler Science written by and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a summary of research projects in the area of low energy nuclear reactions and structure, carried out between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2005 and supported by U.S. DOE grant number DE-FG03-03NA00074. Cross sections measured with high resolution have been subjected to an Ericson theory analysis to infer information about the nuclear level density. Other measurements were made of the spectral shape of particles produced in evaporation processes; these also yield level density information. A major project was the development of a new Hauser-Feshbach code for analyzing such spectra. Other measurements produced information on the spectra of gamma rays emitted in reactions on heavy nuclei and gave a means of refining our understanding of gamma-ray strength functions. Finally, reactions on light nuclei were studied and subjected to an R-matrix analysis. Cross sections fora network of nuclear reactions proceedingthrough a given compound nucleus shouldgreatly constrain the family of allowed parameters. Modifications to the formalism andcomputer code are also discussed.

Book Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics written by A.S. Iljinov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermediate-Energy Nuclear Physics is devoted to discussing the interaction between hadrons with nuclei, which leads to the emission of particles during an intranuclear cascade and subsequent decay of a highly excited residual nucleus. Experimental data and the methods and results of the calculation of probabilities of various processes initiated by intermediate-energy hadrons in nuclei are set forth and discussed. The potential for obtaining information on the structure and properties of nuclei by comparing experimental data with theoretical results is analyzed. New issues, such as analytic methods for the solution of kinetic equations describing the cascade, nuclear absorption of hadrons from bound states of hadronic atoms, interaction of antinucleons with nuclei, multifragmentation of highly excited residual nuclei, and polarization phenomena, are discussed in detail. The book also demonstrates hadron-nucleus interactions that bridge the gap between low-energy and heavy ions physics. It is an interesting reference for nuclear physicists and other researchers interested in the analysis of problems associated with the evolution of the early (hot) universe, neutron stars and supernovas, after-burning of radioactive waste in nuclear energy installations, and electronuclear energy breeding.

Book Nuclear Research With Low Energy Accelerators

Download or read book Nuclear Research With Low Energy Accelerators written by Jerry Marion and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Research with Low Energy Accelerators describes the various programs using low energy accelerators. This book discusses the various techniques and instruments that are available, including beam pulsing or the use of sophisticated high-resolution detecting systems. Comprised of 23 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the application of lithium-drifted germanium gamma-ray detectors in single detector systems from the perspective of obtaining optimum performance. This text then discusses the nuclear electromagnetic transition probabilities that can be measured by different methods, including Coulomb excitation, electron scattering, and nuclear resonance fluorescence. Other chapters explain the general characteristics and geometry of a coincidence–anticoincidence spectrometer. This book discusses as well the different uses of magnetic spectrometers in experimental studies of nuclear physics. The final chapter deals with the easy access to fast digital computers to obtain more sophisticated raw information. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, nuclear physicists, and astrophysicists.

Book The Science of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction

Download or read book The Science of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction written by Edmund Storms and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2007 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important discoveries of this century -- cold fusion -- was summarily rejected by science and the media before sufficient evidence had been accumulated to make a rational judgment possible. Enough evidence is now available to show that this rejection was wrong and that the discovery of a new source of clean energy may help solve some serious problems currently facing mankind. The book catalogues and evaluates this evidence and shows why the initial reaction was driven more by self-interest than fact. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history and science behind the cold fusion controversy. In addition to the technological importance of the effect, the discovery of new ways to initiate nuclear reactions without producing significant radiation reveals an entirely new mechanism operating at the nuclear level in solid material. This new mechanism has important implications for an understanding of many other phenomena.

Book Common Problems in Low and Medium Energy Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Common Problems in Low and Medium Energy Nuclear Physics written by B. Castel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1978 Advanced Study Institute in Nuclear Theory devoted to common problems in Low and Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics was held at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada from August 21 through September 1, 1978. The present volume contains the text of 25 lectures and seminars given at the Institute and illustrates the directions that nuclear physicists are taking in the evolution toward a unified picture of low, medium and high energy phenomena. Recent attempts at unifying the weak and electromagnetic inter action in particle physics have led naturally to question their role in nuclei. The success of the quark model at interpreting the new resonances in high energy physics makes it imperative to consider their role in dealing with nuclear physics problems at the microscopic level. Is our present knowledge of the nuclear potential consistent' with recent experimental evidence at low and medium energy and can it correlate meaningfully nuclear and pion physics phenomena? These are some of the fundamental questions debated in this book attempting to offer a consistent picture of the nuclear system as it emerges using the electromagnetic, weak and strong interaction probe. The lectures and seminars forming the present volume have been divided into four sections dealing with a) the weak interaction, b) quarks and nuclear structure, c) physics of electrons, protons and kaons, and finally d) pion physics.
