Book Statistical Gradient Block and Graft Copolymers by Controlled Living Radical Polymerizations

This book was released on 2007-11-02 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and the realisation of well defined polymer architectures has become an important goal in macromolecular science. The prerequisite for achieving this goal is the availability of controlled polymerisation reactions. Living anionic polymerisation was the first reaction fulfilling these requirements. Cationic polymerisation only came into play when it was realised that it was possible to create an equilibrium between active and dormant species with the fraction of the dormant species being far superior to that of active ones. A corresponding principle applies to controlled radical polymerisation per formed in quite a number of modes such as nitroxide mediated polymerisation (NMP), atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP), reversible addition frag mentation chain transfer (RAFT) or catalytic chain transfer (CCT) reactions. All of these variants of controlled radical polymerisation lead to well defined archi tectures with the particular advantage that a much larger number of monomers are suitable and the reaction conditions are much less demanding than those of living ionic polymerisation reactions. Although in controlled radical polymerisation, termination reactions cannot be excluded completely, they are limited in their extent and consequently the mol ecular weight is controlled, the polydispersity index is small and functionalities can be attached to the macromolecules. These features are indicative of the real isation of well defined polymer architectures such as block copolymers, star shaped and comb shaped copolymers.

Book Stable Free Radical Polymerization Conducted In Emulsion Polymerization Systems

Download or read book Stable Free Radical Polymerization Conducted In Emulsion Polymerization Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free radical polymerization is the most common polymerization technique that is used for the manufacturing of polymers, due to the ease of the polymerization initiation, wide latitude of the material design for a large variety of monomers, and the excellent process robustness for commercial production. In the 1990's, research activities for the precise control of radical polymerization process resulted in the discovery of 'Living Radical Polymerization'. The discoveries opened the door for the next generation of radical polymerizations. Extensive research has been conducted to understand the mechanisms and kinetics for numerous practical applications, particularly for polymerization in bulk and solution systems. However, despite the interest of industry, the mechanistic understanding in aqueous dispersed systems such as emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization is far behind the aforementioned two systems. There are still major challenges from the production viewpoint. One reason for the poor understanding is the complexity of the heterogeneous system, which includes multiple reaction phases that are accompanied by the segregation and transfer of the reaction species among different phases. The purpose of this research was to investigate living radical polymerization or "Stable Free Radical Polymerization" (SFRP) in aqueous dispersed systems to obtain better mechanistic understanding of how the heterogeneous nature of the system interacts with the novel living radical chemistry. The theoretical and experimental feasibility of the SFRP emulsion process were studied in this research, in particular, focusing on the compartmentalization effect. Particle size influence on the polymerization kinetics and the polymer livingness was experimentally confirmed, and compared to bulk polymerization. In addition, a comprehensive mathematical model including all major chemical and physical events was developed to further our mechanistic understanding. Based on the results from the.

Book Living controlled Radical Polymerization

Download or read book Living controlled Radical Polymerization written by Delphine Chan-Seng and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emulsion polymerization is an important process for the industrial production of polymers. However, initial attempts at performing "living"/controlled radical polymerization under emulsion conditions were not particularly successful primarily due to latex instability. To address this problem a unique nanoprecipitation process was developed in our laboratory for the stable free radical polymerization (SFRP) process. The first part of this thesis describes attempts to generalize this process and extend it to the copper based atom transfer radical polymerization, ATRP, process. Details describing initial problems we had with reproducing some initial successful results are provided. Once the process was under control it was used to synthesize block copolymers. The ability of these block copolymers to self-assemble in aqueous solutions and in bulk were subsequently investigated and the results of these studies are detailed at the end of the discussion on the emulsion process. The second part of the thesis deals with the SFRP process and more specifically with the difficulty of the process to moderate the polymerization of acrylates. Two reasons have been advanced to account for this difficulty; a high bond dissociation energy between the C-O bond linking the nitroxide moiety to the end of the polymer chain and an accumulation of excess nitroxide, caused by unavoidable chain termination, which causes inhibition of the polymerization. To address the high bond dissociation energy a nitroxide, specifically, 1,1'-diadamantyl nitroxide, containing very bulky substituents that might cause the bond to weaken, was synthesized and studied. To address the accumulation of excess free nitroxide, high temperature additives, that would slowly dissociate over time and consume the excess nitroxides, were studied. The results of both of these approaches are provided enabling some insight into what might be actually restricting the polymerization of acrylates.

Book Controlled Radical Polymerization

Download or read book Controlled Radical Polymerization written by Krzysztof Matyjaszewski and published by ACS Symposium. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book and the following volume (1188: Controlled Radical Polymerization: Materials) are addressed to chemists and polymer scientists interested in radical processes, and especially in controlled/living radical polymerization. The chapters in this first volume summarize the most recent advances in the field, including mechanistic, materials, and applications aspects. Controlled/living radical polymerization (CRP) or reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP, as recommended by IUPAC) is among the most rapidly expanding areas of chemistry and polymer science. This first volume provides an overview of the current status of controlled/living radical polymerization (CRP) systems, and also discusses important issues relevant to all radical polymerization methods. The mechanistic and kinetic aspects of ATRP are also covered, as well as more complex mechanisms such as "hybrid" processes. Thirty-seven chapters published in two volumes show that there have been significant developments in CRP over the last 15 years. New systems have been discovered; substantial progress has been achieved in understanding the mechanism and kinetics of reactions involved in all CRP systems. As a result of these advances, significant progress has been made towards developing a comprehensive relationship between molecular structure and macroscopic properties. Several commercial applications of CRP have been announced and it is anticipated that new products made by CRP will soon be on the market.

Book Radical Polymerization

Download or read book Radical Polymerization written by Michael Buback and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-07-16 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IUPAC-sponsored International Symposium on "Radical Polymerization: Kinetics and Mechanism" was held in Il Ciocco (Italia) during the week September 3-8, 2006. It was the fourth within the series of so-called SML conferences, which are the major scientific forum for addressing kinetic and mechanistic aspects of free-radical polymerization and of ontrolled radical polymerization. Top international authors like K. Matyjaszewski, T. P. Davis, T. Fukuda and others present their latest research. The five major themes covered were: Fundamentals of Free-Radical Polymerization, Heterogeneous Polymerization, Controlled Radical Polymerization, Polymer Reaction Engineering, and Polymer Characterization. SML IV again marked an important step forward toward the better understanding of the kinetics and mechanism of radical polymerization, which is extremely relevant for both conventional and controlled radical polymerization and for people in academia as well as in industry.
