It is a musical text-book for the church school; it con tains the hymns which the child should study, sing and love. Those marked with an asterisk should be committed to memory. Most of the hymns in the collection are hymns of prayer and praise. A few subjective hymns have been included; these, though their theme is outside of the religious experience of the child, should still have a place in his religious training. Evening hymns have been included because no representative collection is complete without them. The German choral melodies have been arranged for the most part for unison singing. This is not only effective, but also practical, since the alto and tenor parts are often poorly represented in Sunday schools, and are some times entirely lacking. Upon the Sunday school superintendent depends in large measure the useful ness of the book. He should not limit himself to certain tunes or to certain familiar sections. Each hymn has been inserted for a special purpose, and every hymn is meant to be sung. In the Advent season the children should be taught the Advent hymns, and so on through the Church Year. In many cases it will be possible for the superintendent to impart interesting information about the history of a hymn. Schools should be assembled occasionally for practice. While not entirely composed of hymns written exactly in accordance with the doctrines of Christian Science it presents the acme of religious and poetic thought contained in the best hymns of the day, as well as in the best compositions thus far contributed by Christian Scientists. A few Sabbath School hymns have been added to the list, without any attempt at revision, believing that for some they will meet a present need. Much labor has been bestowed upon this compilation, by the Committee; and, in the musical department of this work, great credit is due Mr. Lyman Brackett of Boston, Mass., for untiring effort to present the most useful and varied collection of tunes ever issued in one hymnal, the purpose being to appeal to every lover of church music, of whatever taste or ability. Special attention has been given to the wedding of words and music, not only as to character of composition, but in respect to proper accentuation, etc., wherever it has been found possible. The system of arrangement is original and unique. On the pages with the hymns, have been placed standard tunes familiar to every church-goer. Every sec ond tune is by an English or German composer of unquestioned musical ability, and will be found adapted either to chorus-choir, or advanced congregational sing ing. Every third tune has been composed by Mr. Brackett especially for this work; and, permission from him should be secured by any person or persons desiring to use the same. Although designed particularly for quartette or choir use, many of them may be sung by the average congregation, and will be found available for responses, offertories or sentences. A few tunes have been arranged for male voices, as it is believed that there is a demand for these in some churches. As far as practicable they are printed as their authors wrote them; such accepted alterations as it seemed necessary to adopt being referred to in the notes.
