Book excerpt: Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report evidence of a pair of excited charmed baryons, one decaying into[Lambda][sub c][sup+][pi][sup+] and the other into[Lambda][sub c][sup+][pi][sup -]. The doubly charged state has a measured mass difference M([Lambda][sub c][sup+][pi][sup+]) - M([Lambda][sub c][sup+]) of 234.5[+-] 1.1[+-] 0.8 MeV and a width of 17.9[sub -3.2][sup+3.8][+-] 4.0 MeV, and the neutral state has a measured mass difference M([Lambda][sub c][sup+][pi][sup -]) - M([Lambda][sub c][sup+]) of 232.6[+-] 1.0[+-] 0.8 MeV and a width of 13.0[sub -3.0][sup+3.7][+-] 4.0 MeV. We identify these states as[Sigma]*[sub c][sup++] and[Sigma]*[sub c][sup 0], the spin 3/2[sup+] excitations of the[Sigma][sub c] baryons.

An analysis of the decay to the p{bar K}[pi] final state is described. Resonant sub-channel fractions and phases are given and possible resonant effects in the low mass p{bar K} system discussed. Significant decay to {Lambda}{sub c} → [Delta]2K− establishes for the first time the importance of a W exchange mechanism in charmed baryon decay.

Book excerpt: A search for charmed baryons decaying to D{sup 0}p reveals two states: the {Lambda}{sub c}(2880){sup +} baryon and a previously unobserved state at a mass of [2939.8 {+-} 1.3 (stat.) {+-} 1.0 (syst.)] MeV/c{sup 2} and with an intrinsic width of [17.5 {+-} 5.2 (stat.) {+-} 5.9 (syst.)] MeV. Consistent and significant signals are observed for the K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} and K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +} decay modes of the D{sup 0} in 287 fb{sup -1} annihilation data recorded by the BABAR detector at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. There is no evidence in the D{sup +}p spectrum of doubly-charged partners. The mass and intrinsic width of the {Lambda}{sub c}(2880){sup +} baryon and relative yield of the two baryons are also measured.

Book excerpt: The SELEX experiment (E781) at Fermilab has observed two statistically compelling high mass states near 3.6 GeV/c[sup 2], decaying to[Lambda][sub c][sup+] K[sup -][pi][sup+] and[Lambda][sub c][sup+] K[sup -][pi][sup+][pi][sup+]. These final states are Cabibbo-allowed decay modes of doubly charmed baryons[Xi][sub cc][sup+] and[Xi][sub cc][sup++], respectively. The masses are in the range expected from theoretical considerations, but the spectroscopy is surprising. SELEX also has weaker preliminary evidence for a state near 3.8 GeV/c[sup 2], a high mass state decaying to[Lambda][sub c][sup+] K[sup -][pi][sup+][pi][sup+], possibly an excited[Xi][sub cc][sup++] (ccu*). Data are presented and discussed.

Some evidence also exists for other channels, K/sub S/p, .lambda pi.+, etc. (2) The study of charmed mesons. Here some new hadronic decay modes are mentioned, and the Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. (3) The D+ - D° lifetime ratio; evidence is presented that the D+ has a longer lifetime than the D° by about a factor of three, although the statistical error is fairly large on this number.

Evidence for the observation of semileptonic decays of the charmed baryon is presented. Direct electrons are observed in events containing antiprotons, lambdas and antilambdas. The number of electrons per baryon event, after background subtraction and efficiency correction, is used, together with an estimate of the charmed baryon content of proton and lambda events, to calculate inclusive and semi-inclusive semileptonic branching ratios of the ..lambda../sub c.

Book excerpt: We have carried out a search for a charmed baryon [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ decaying to [Omega]$0\atop{c}$ and a [gamma] where [Omega] c candidates are reconstructed using decay modes [Omega]-[pi]+(c1), [Omega]-[pi]+[pi]0(c2), [Omega]-[pi]+[pi]-[pi]+(c3) and [Xi]-K-[pi]+[pi]+(c4). This search is performed by analyzing integrated luminosity of 230.7 fb-1 data collected by the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In decay channel [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ → [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Omega]-[pi]+)[gamma] (C1), we observe a signal yield of 39.2$+9.8\atop{-9.1}$ (stat)±6.0(syst) events with a significance of 4.2 standard deviations. In decay channels [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ → [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Omega]-[pi]+[pi]0)[gamma] (C2) and [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ →} [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Xi]-K-[pi]+[pi]+)[gamma] (C4), we observe signal yields of 55.2$+16.1\atop{-15.2}$ ± 5.6 and 20.2$+9.3\atop{-8.5}$ ± 3.1 with significances of 3.4 and 2.0 [sigma], respectively. As for the [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ → [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Omega]-[pi]+[pi]-[pi]+)[gamma] (C3) decay channel, we observe signal yields of -5.1$+5.3.8\atop{-4.7}$±1.0 without a positive significance. We assume the same production mechanism for the four decay channels of [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ studied. By combining these four channels, the fit results in a signal yield of 105.3$+21.2\atop{-20.5}$± 6.0 events with a significance of 5.2 [sigma]. We report the mass difference [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ - [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([delta]m) of the singly charmed baryon [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ to be 70.8$+1.0\atop{-1.0}$±1.1 MeV. Finally, the ratios of production cross sections are calculated: [sigma](e+e-→C1)/[sigma](e+e-→c1) = 0.71$+0.19\atop{-0.18}$±0.11, [sigma](e+e-→C2)/[sigma](e+e-→c2) = 1.76$+0.71\atop{-0.69}$±0.19, [sigma](e+e-→C3)/[sigma](e+e-→c3) = -0.66$+0.74\atop{-0.66}$±0.13, [sigma](e+e-→C4)/[sigma](e+e-→c4) = 1.70{sup +1.0}{sub -1.0}±0.27 and [sigma](e+e-→[Omega]$*\atop{c}$ (combined))/[sigma](e+e-→[Omega]$0\atop{c}$) = 1.0$+0.23\atop{-0.22}$±0.11.
