Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One simple, powerful word—hineini—contains the key to deepening your relationship with God and with others. Hineini (Here I am!). This single spoken word appears only fourteen times in the Bible–each time in a memorable and meaningful story: Abraham offering Isaac as a sacrifice to God, Jacob deceiving his father for Esau’s birthright, Moses answering the call that comes from the Burning Bush. Scholar and popular teacher Norman Cohen explores each of these powerful stories and shows what each can reveal about you as parent, spouse, sibling, lover, and friend. By probing these dynamic biblical relationships, Cohen challenges you to think about the ways you relate to the people in your life and God. And, to add other fascinating perspectives to the conversation, eleven insightful authors and teachers share personal reflections that exemplify each of the hineini passages.

Download or read book The Third Pillar written by Geoffrey Hartman and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-05-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should we be excluded from the history and literature of Judaism because the world of our fathers and mothers became a secularized one, Geoffrey Hartman asks, or because religious literacy, whatever our faith or community affiliation, has gone into relative decline? And why, he asks, do those who have no trouble finding pleasure and intellectual profit in the Greek and Roman classics or in the literary and artistic productions of two millennia of Western Christianity not easily find equal resonance and reward in the major texts in the Jewish tradition? For if Christianity and the classical inheritance stand as two pillars of Western civilization, surely the third pillar is the Jewish tradition. In The Third Pillar Hartman, one of the most influential scholars and teachers of English and comparative literature of recent decades, has brought together some of the most important and eloquent essays he has written since the 1980s on the major texts of the Jewish tradition. In three groupings, on Bible, Midrash, and education, Hartman clarifies the relevance of contemporary literary criticism to canonical texts in the tradition, while demonstrating what has been—and what still remains to be—learned from the Midrash to enrich the interpretation of commentary and art, sacred or secular. "The map of the discipline [of Jewish studies] is still being drawn," Hartman writes. "Barely known areas tempt the explorer, and major reinterpretations remain possible. This third pillar of our civilization . . . is only now being fully excavated: we have discovered something but not everything about its structure and upholding function."

Book Further Studies of the Narratives in the Book of Genesis

Download or read book Further Studies of the Narratives in the Book of Genesis written by Dr. Martin Sicker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in the Book of Genesis have been studied intensely for more than two millennia, providing a virtual mountain of commentary on every aspect of the narratives contained therein. Viewed from a traditional perspective, the stories related in Genesis are essentially graphic philosophical and theological narratives designed to convey profound ideas and insights that would otherwise be found only in tomes designed for students of philosophy and theology. A close substantive examination of these narratives, as presented in the Masoretic text, but often lost in translation where the subtleties of the Hebrew wording are glossed over, will reveal a treasure trove of insights into the fundamental issues of religious belief, the divine-human relationship, free will and determinism, the complex nature of humankind, and theodicy. The present work contains six ‘deep dive’ studies of selected narratives in the book of Genesis that continue to address questions of theological significance in addition to the relationship of man to the Creator, as well as to his fellow man. The first study in this collection focuses on The First Verse of the book of Genesis and explores the vast implications of its seven Hebrew terms, as considered by commentators for two millennia. The second, The Garden of Eden, deals with the moral implications of the relationship between man and God. The third, The Covenant, deals with the reasons why Abraham was chosen to be the progenitor of the civilization ultimately destined to change the course of human history. The fourth, Jacob’s Dream, explores the symbolisms and implications of this tale of interaction between man and the celestial world. The fifth, The Joseph Saga, probes the question of man’s free will and divine providential intervention in human affairs. The sixth, Jacob’s Final Days, examines in depth the Patriarch Jacob’s reflections on the legacy he leaves behind as he departs the scene. It is the hope and expectation of the author of these studies that the reader will come away from them with even more questions about the biblical texts than they had before. As will be seen there has always been little consensus over the centuries about the meanings of these essentially ‘right brain’ texts, primarily because they are constructed and written in a manner that tends to challenge ‘left brain’ analysis. Nonetheless, their study remains intellectually important because the topics they deal with are of great pertinence to contemporary society.

Book Tales of Nehama

Download or read book Tales of Nehama written by Leah Abramowitz and published by Gefen Publishing House Ltd. This book was released on 2003 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Nehama Leibowitz? This question is thoroughly and lovingly explored in Tales of Nehama, by Lea Abramowitz. The result is a fascinating, in-depth exploration of a leading bible scholar, and renowned and revered teacher. Through hundreds of anecdotes and memories, told by Leibowitzs students, colleagues and friends, Tales of Nehama outlines Leibowitzs profound personal impact on thousands of people, and on Jewish learning and biblical criticism. Nehama Leibowitz had requested only one word to be inscribed on her tombstone: teacher. This comprehensive volume details her personal qualities that contributed to her outstanding success as an educator -- her devotion to people and acts of kindness, her modesty, her tolerance and openness to all, and her sense of humour. But Tales of Nehama goes further, to explore Leibowitzs teaching methods, in which actualisation and entertaining played a major role. From an intimate analysis of her character and beliefs -- her stand on feminism and Zionism, her views on Hareidim, the secular world, and on education -- to the central chapter, which recounts dozens of Tales of Nehama, concise, true stories that serve to outline the tremendous impact and inner workings of this great scholar, the book also comprises comprehensive sections exploring many aspects of her intellectual endeavours. These include her studies of the weekly Torah portions; an appraisal of her teaching methods; a review of her pedagogical approach; her commentaries on certain Psalms; her essay entitled "Active Learning in the Teaching of History"; an exchange of letters between Nehama Leibowitz and Professor Hugo Bergman, portraying a fascinating dialogue between two very brilliant and committed Jewish scholars; and a section exploring published articles that recognise Leibowitzs unique contribution to Jewish thought and study. The book not only answers the question Who was Nehama Leibowitz? but it also creates a vivid portrayal of a genius whose impact on Judaism was unparalleled, and will reverberate for generations to come.
