Book Studies in the Marvellous Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Marvellous Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Putnam Kurtz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Marvellous But if the marvellous has failed to receive a satisfactory treat ment at the hands of literary students, in another direction it has been investigated with surprising fulness. The students of eth nology and folk-lore have, with purposes quite other than those of literary criticism, brought together, and partially classified, a vast number of marvels drawn from primitive and popular religious belief, custom, and superstition. It is hardly necessary to cite the long roster Of those who in all parts of the learned world are following in the steps of Lord Avebury, Spencer, Tylor, Frazer, and berenger-féraud. By the systematic and devoted efforts of this great band of modern humanists, there has been brought together a mass of Observations and explanations of the marvellous element in belief and story, which, though quite inde pendent Of any literary interpretation, nevertheless is by all odds the most considerable achievement in the study of the wonderful, not only since the time of Aristotle, but in all time. Such works, to mention only English examples, as The Origins of Civilization, Primitive Culture, The Golden Bough, Myth, Ritual and Religion, or The Legend of Perseus, are as monu mental to the success attending the application of the methods of scientific research to Spiritual matters as they are unique in the history of humanism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Eve Was Not Created, and Other Stories To think how it ever came there at all is but to make another observation on the marvellous persistence of man's nature. To comprehend, when fertile plains are yet unbroken, how it is that folk will live there; to watch how they will drive picks into the rock behind in order that they may mine out another inch of doorstep, so that some time in a rage the black water may not quite suck them under; to explain all these things with satisfaction is to solve many ques tions of the universe and throw open the shut gates of science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interludes and Undertones: Or Music at Twilight New friends whom it is possible he may acquire. Even in an age when Science, with its marvellous discoveries and no less marvellous applications, in vades the monopoly once enjoyed by imagination, there is still room for poetry if it be worthy of the name and have a meaning clearly expressed in appropriate language, and can make good its claim to be something better'than mere verse. To the class of readers'who admire without understanding, and who unconsciously allow themselves to think that whatever is beyond the reach of their intellect must be magnificent, the author makes no appeal. He considers that it is the duty, and that it should be the pleasure of every writer, to express himself clearly, and if he cannot do so, that he should throw aside his useless pen as an admission that he has mistaken his vocation. Lyrical and all other poetry should avoid misty verbiage, confused thought, and pithless metaphysical subtleties, and should, as Milton says, be simple, sensuous, and passionate, and, above all things, intelligible to the heart and understanding of the uneducated as well as of the refined. To the rule of Milton the author has endeavoured to conform his verse, not without the hope that it might thereby become poetry as dis tinguished from mere verse, even to the busy and prosaic-minded people of the closing decades of the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fabre, Poet of Science In undertaking this task my devoted disciple has to some extent been able to replace those Memoirs which he suggested that I should write, and which only my bad health has prevented me from undertaking; for I feel that henceforth I am done with wide horizons and far-reaching thoughts. And yet on reading now the old letters which he has exhumed from a mass of old yellow papers, and which! He has presented and co ordinated with so pious a care, it seems to me that in the depths of my being I can'. Still feel rising in me all the fever of my early years, all the enthusiasm of long ago, and that I should still be no less ardent a worker were not the weakness of my eyes and the failure of my strength to-day an insurmountable obstacle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classical Studies in Honour of Henry Drisler Although the general sense of these lines is clear, yet two words in vv. 16 - 17 have occasioned much discussion, and in fact appear to defy exact definition. Nor do I believe that their real meaning in this passage can ever be determined to the entire satisfaction of Horatian students. It is the prevalence of opinion, however, in what seems to me to be the wrong direction that prompts me to avail myself of this opportunity to discuss the question somewhat at length, and to present a few points in favour of my own view of the matter. Book Bible Studies in the Life of Paul Historical and Constructive Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Studies in the Life of Paul, Historical and Constructive The book of Acts shows in a very graphic way the rapid growth and marvelous progress of Christianity in the midst of great Opposition. We see in process of ful fillment the promise of Jesus Christ to his disciples that they should receive power after the Holy Ghost had come upon them and that they should be witnesses unto Him both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermnst part of the earth. Those were earn est times and full of stirring events, when men went forth to conquer a hostile world not With swords, but by the preaching of a gospel of peace and good will. As soon as this proclamation was made in Judea and Samaria a new instrument was chosen by Jesus Christ, in Paul, to carry His message to the uttermost part of the earth. He thus became at once the chief character in the larger work of planting and developing churches outside of Palestine. The study of Paul's life shows the difficulties encountered, the doctrines taught, and the organization perfected in the early churches. We here watch the dawn of the gospel which the Savior preached as it broadens gradually into the boundless day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Air and Water IN this little book I have attempted to bring before my readers the wonderful changes and actions which are going on around them in our atmosphere, and the even more marvellous work which water is performing in nature. A knowledge of the relations which exist between our health and the air we live m, and of the effects which water and its various impurities have upon our system, is so important, and has so wide a bearing upon the comfort and well-being of the human race, that this knowledge should form an important factor in our National Education. Unfortunately it is only of late years that the true import ance of natural science has been recognized, and it is Often found that amongst the well-educated classes but little is known of the subject, whilst in an ordinary commercial education the time devoted to science is small indeed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Deluge in the Light of Modern Science: A Discourse Fear not, my brother: it can but burn the straw and stubble if gold, it will shine as bright after the fie! Y ordeal as before, and reflect as perfectly the image of truth. The Bible abounds with marvellous stories, stories that we should at once reject from their intrinsic im probability, not to say impossibility, if we should find them in any other book. But, among all the stories, there is none that equals the account of the deluge, as given in the sixth, seventh, and eighth chapters of Genesis. It towers above the rest as Mount Wash ington does above the new-england hills; and, as travellers delight to climb the loftiest peaks, I sup pose that many would be pleased to examine this lofty story, and see how the world of truth and actuality looks from its summit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Marvelous Highlands of Guatemala It was more than a half day' s ride from this point before we came to Godines Crest and beheld, 3, 000 feet below us, the deep blue waters of Lake Atitlan, and on its opposite shores, rising sheer a mile to a mile and one - half above the surface of the iako, seven great volcanoes, of which the two known as Atitlan are the most wonderful. Lake Atitlan, itself a vast crater lake 27 miles m greatest length and 12 miles Wide, is a remarkable body of water. The Rev. Father Garcia, of Naguala, a graduate of the University of Rome, and one who has given enthusiastic study to the meteorology of the region, informed me that official soundings of this lake gave an extreme depth of more.
