Download or read book Studies in the Life of John Wesley Classic Reprint written by E. B. Chappell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of John Wesley WE know through the admirable labors of Mr. Galton, remarks Charles Darwin, that genius, which implies a wonderfully complex combination of high faculties, tends to be inherited. Perhaps scientific men to-day would not be quite so confident in making this assertion as was Mr. Darwin; but whatever doubt there may be as to the immediate transmission from parent to child of that wonderfully complex combi nation of high qualities which he denominates gen ius, it is quite certain that family traits and tend encies may be developed and handed down from generation to generation, if the process be not counter acted by the introduction through intermarriage of unfavorable strains. The Observation that a man's training ought to begin with his great-grandmother should be so modified as to include both Of his great grandmothers and his great-grandfathers too. Being descended from long lines of cultured and pious an cestors on both the paternal and maternal sides is a matter of no Small import in one's life. This is one of God's ways of bringing into being individuals pos sessed of those rare latent qualities which make it possible for them, under the influence of the Holy Spirit and by wise nurture and training, to develop into saints and spiritual leaders. The idea that there was in some real sense a providential preparation for the coming of John Wesley does not, therefore, seem to me far-fetched or unreasonable. Download or read book Life of John Wesley Classic Reprint written by B. W. Bond and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of John Wesley The author has so grouped the leading events in the life- of Mr. Wesley as to present in as small compass a fair and distinct likeness of the great Founder of Methodism. It is a miniature representation, but large and distinct enough- to give our young people a correct idea of the man and his work. We think the book opportiae, and trust it will do much good. Our children should be aught to know and veninerate the character of the man who has done so much for the world, and to whom we as a Church are indebted for our existence. It is a fault of the present generation of Methodists that they know so little about him. We place this memoir in our catalogue with the hope that it will soon find its way into every Sunday-school library in the land, and that it may stimulate thousands to a better life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Centenary Life of Wesley The attention of every Christian in the English-speaking world will probably be drawn, sooner or later, during this Centenary Year of John Wesley, to the life of the remarkable man whom Churchmen and Nonconformists - those who still call themselves after his name, and those who do not - combine to praise for his zeal, faith, power, and the great work which he did for the cause of true heartfelt religion. Several memoirs of Wesley have been written, but, in adding to their number, we do so in the hope that the present one may meet a want which the Centenary Year will create. John Wesley, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing, an Account of His Family; Of His Education in the Early Part of His Life, and the Five First Numbers of His Journal We may give nearly the same character of many of his controversial Pieces. They were written as need required: first, to preserve those who were in danger of being seduced from the plain Religion of the Bible and secondly, to recover those who had already fallen into the snare. His Treatise on 8571, is perhaps one of the most laboured of these performances: For he knew and respect.. Ed the abilities of his Opponent, and therefore bestowed much time and attention in a careful investigation of the subject. Whether Dr. Taylor, was convinced or not, his esteem was gained; and, as he ne ver would answer M11. Wnsmr, so he always spoke of him in terms of great respect. John Wesley, M.A The Indians were found to be inaccessible, and he began work among the colonists. He labored in Georgia for two years, when he was compelled to return to England, having suffered much, acquired three European languages, preached to the scattered settlers, and taken steps to give the Gospel to the Negroes and the Indians. As he was nearing his native shores in January, 1737, Wesley wrote: I went to America to convert Indians, but oh, who shall convert me 1 During his absence, Whitfield had become a flaming evangelist, and having moved all London and Bristol, had just set sail for Georgia. Wesley was yet to receive the new light and the needed impulse. He met Peter Bohler, and was amazed to hear Of the holiness and happiness which sprang from living faith. Wesley studied the New Testament more earnestly, and began extem'poraneous prayer. An instantaneous change of heart was what staggered him most. Book Charles Wesley

Download or read book Charles Wesley written by D. M. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Wesley: A Study IF ever there was a human being who disliked power, avoided prominence, and shrank from praise, it was Charles Wesley. This was the judgment passed after his death by one who knew him intimately, and it seems indeed that posterity has served him according to his wish. To the majority he remains, as he loved all his life to be, hidden in the amazing shadow of his brother. Yet the man who has been styled with reason the greatest hymn-writer who ever lived, the author of poems which will never die so long as the praises of God are sung in the English tongue, might seem to deserve more than a secondary and reflected recognition. In the great hall of Christ Church, Oxford, hung with scores of portraits of people of importance in their day and of no significance to ours, one looks in vain for any memento of Charles Wesley, Student of Christ Church. Biographies of John Wesley and studies of him have been' multiplied past counting, and most people are content to obtain their notions of Charles Wesley from scattered notices in books devoted to his brother. Yet, both his personality and his career are fully worthy of independent attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
