Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ T hese Studies in the Life of Christ were originally prepared as a series of Sunday evening discourses, while the author was a minister in Aberdeen. This is stated, partly, that he may connect them with a city and people he will always love, and, partly, that he may thus most simply define their real character and limits. They are not exhaustive and critical discussions on the Gospel History, but, at most, attempts at orientation - at reach ing points of view from which the life of Christ may be understood and construed. Book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ewald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Character of Jesus

Download or read book The Character of Jesus written by Charles Edward Jefferson and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1908 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Jesus Christ focuses upon the personal characteristics and traits which He demonstrated to the peoples of ancient Judaea. The author seeks to demystify and clarify the subject, with a rigorous reading of the New Testament lore and other accounts of Jesus. The character of the Son of God was established when He approached others with interest in their life situations, in the words He delivered to them, and the deeds He undertook in life. The author posits that Jesus wanted mankind to arrive at the truth of what God intends for humanity by observing his own personality; He set a thorough example of conduct for all men, of the virtues which believers in the Lord can carry through life. Each quality Christ displays is given its own chapter. The author frequently quotes scripture to help his narration. We discover that Jesus was a candid person; delivering messages with frankness and clarity. He displayed patience, generosity, courage and enthusiasm in his daily life and sermons. Later on the work discusses the connections Jesus had with God; the holiness and reverence for the divinity He displays are significant. Finally the work summarizes the overall greatness of Christ. Charles Edward Jefferson was a clergyman who spent decades preaching in Ohio, writing several books on sermonizing and on various Christian topics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Inner Life of Jesus The writer desired to help his readers by supplying a detailed analysis of the contents, such as he provided in his volume on The Ritschlian but he found on closer examination that this volume, dealing as it does with sayings and doings of Jesus, and not offering a continuous argument, does not lend itself so well to this treatment. A full index of Scripture references, and another of writers quoted and subjects treated has been provided, and will, it is hoped, afford the guidance to the contents which is needed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Events in the Life of Christ: In Twenty-Five Studies Arranged for Daily Reading and Weekly Class Work This course of study aims to present within reason able compass and in clear outline the great events in the life of the Master. A short and easy course on such a theme is impossible, but an earnest effort has been made to Simplify the undertaking and yet fur nish to the earnest student all needed help. Special attention has been given to the outline, not only of the ministry as a whole but for each of its periods. The more one studies the life of Jesus the more clearly it appears that that life was an orderly progress toward its goal. While the chronology is often uncertain, the order is logical, almost inevitable. When this order is once fixed in the mind, each great event fits into its own place and only there. In this course the outlines preceding each period, the topical arrangement of each subject and the reviews all serve to emphasize this order which the casual reader of the gospels so Often misses. Book Bible Studies in the Life of Paul Historical and Constructive Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Studies in the Life of Paul, Historical and Constructive The book of Acts shows in a very graphic way the rapid growth and marvelous progress of Christianity in the midst of great Opposition. We see in process of ful fillment the promise of Jesus Christ to his disciples that they should receive power after the Holy Ghost had come upon them and that they should be witnesses unto Him both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermnst part of the earth. Those were earn est times and full of stirring events, when men went forth to conquer a hostile world not With swords, but by the preaching of a gospel of peace and good will. As soon as this proclamation was made in Judea and Samaria a new instrument was chosen by Jesus Christ, in Paul, to carry His message to the uttermost part of the earth. He thus became at once the chief character in the larger work of planting and developing churches outside of Palestine. The study of Paul's life shows the difficulties encountered, the doctrines taught, and the organization perfected in the early churches. We here watch the dawn of the gospel which the Savior preached as it broadens gradually into the boundless day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bethlehem to Olivet: The Life of Jesus Christ Yet in no portion of the life of Jesus Christ is there really greater glory than in His birth. Nothing showed more love for the world than His condescending to be born. We should say that the heart of the gospel was the cross, but the first act of redemption was the Incarnation, when the Son of God emptied Himself of His divine attributes and entered human life in all the feebleness and helplessness of infancy. In its reveal ing of love and grace, the cradle of Jesus is as marvellous as His cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in the Life of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Studies in the Life of Jesus Christ written by Edward I. Bosworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Jesus Christ This book is designed to introduce the student to the inductive study of the life of Jesus Christ. It therefore takes up one by one the four accounts of the life of Jesus that have come down to us from apostolic days. It has seemed best for the purpose in hand to take these four Gospels up separately, rather than in the form of a Harmony, because it is only through the study of them as separate wholes that the individuality of each can be adequately appreciated. A further reason for such treatment is the fact that there is already published an exceedingly useful course based upon a Harmony. The Gospel of Mark, now generally recognized as the oldest, and certainly the simplest of the four Gospels, will be made the basis of the study in Part I. This Gospel will be studied in detail, with only occasional references to the other three Gospels for supplementary matter. Briefer surveys of Matthew and Luke will be taken with the purpose of discovering their individual characteristics. Last of all, in Part II John's Gospel will be studied at some length. The Gospel of Mark will by this arrangement serve as a standard for purposes of comparison in the study of the other Gospels. This emphasis of Mark is also desirable for another reason, namely, that Mark's Gospel consists of narrative, rather than teaching, and since the teaching of Jesus receives special attention in the last course in the College Cycle, "Studies in the Teaching of Jesus and His Apostles," it is desirable in the present course to pay attention chiefly to the narrative. Book Jesus Christ and the World Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jesus Christ and the World Today Classic Reprint written by Grace Hutchins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the World Today The aim of these studies is to seek in and through the mind and experience of Jesus Christ the way of life for individuals, churches, classes, and nations that shall lead toward a solution of our present problems. We believe that Jesus Christ is the hope of the world; the studies assume this belief and attempt to analyze its implications for the world today. They do not attempt, how ever, to present an economic or political program. We believe that such programs are very definitely the concern of Christians, but intelligent discus sion of programs must follow a clear analysis of our personal share in social wrongs and of the kind of relationships we should try to express in our economic and political life. Just as the preparation of these studies was begun, The Untried Door, by the Reverend Rich ard Roberts, came to us. We read it with a deep sense of agreement and gratitude. We must ex press our indebtedness, also, to the late Walter Rauschenbusch whose Christianity and the Social Crisis translated for us several years ago the hope of the Kingdom into terms of modern life. Download or read book The Life of Christ in Recent Research Classic Reprint written by William Sanday and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ in Recent Research The present volume is composite in its origin; and yet, although it was something of an afterthought to print the papers of which it is composed together, they have a considerable degree of unity both of time and purpose. All but one have been written within very little more than a year; and in several cases, as will be readily seen, one has grown out of another. The nucleus of the volume is formed by four lectures delivered in response to an invitation from Cambridge. They had also been rehearsed at Oxford; and the opportunity has been taken to add to them two supplementary lectures given here in the early summer of this year. Almost at the same time with the invitation from Cambridge I received another to lecture at the Church House; and this lecture appears as No. I of the present series ('The Symbolism of the Bible'), the idea in my mind being that some conception of the extent and nature of Biblical Symbolism would be helpful in connexion with the other lectures. Book Studies in the Life of Christ

Download or read book Studies in the Life of Christ written by Thomas Eddy Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ: A Year's Course of Twenty-Five Lessons, Providing a Daily Scheme for Personal Study Adapted Also to Class Work A course of Bible study adapted to the needs of the young people and those wishing to cooperate with them must necessarily be very flexible in character; but all are equally concerned in the question of Bible study for personal spiritual growth. Realizing, then, that some will desire to enter upon a more extensive study than others, considerable work has been assigned which may, from its very nature, be increased or diminished according to the ability and desire of the student. The work of the fourth and fifth days can be extended almost indefinitely, and yet the beginner will find many things of interest which are well within his reach. The topics and questions of the fifth and sixth days will be especially helpful in class work, as the various members can bring in their independent findings and can verify in class the doubtful points. It is suggested that in personal study and in class work homemade maps shall be used. It requires neither experience nor the ability of an artist to draw good maps and charts. The Outline Map of Palestine for Map-drawing and Distance (Map K, on page 12) is divided into squares of twenty miles on a side, the horizontal rows or columns of squares being designated by figures in the margin of the map from top to bottom, and the perpendicular columns by letters from left to right. The map is thus seen to cover an area of 200 miles north and south by 120 east and west If one wishes to make a map of the whole or of a part of Palestine he has merely to note what squares on Map K cover the given area, and then to lay out on paper or cloth and mark lightly with pencil the same number of squares, but on a scale fitted to the size of the map to be drawn.
