This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the History of Natural Theology The following pages contain the substance of three courses of lectures delivered by the author as Wilde Lecturer on Natural and Comparative Religion in the University of Oxford during the academical years 1911-12 and 1912-13. They may be considered as contributions to the history of Natural Theology in Europe. The first is a general introduction to the subject, the second deals with the Natural Theology of Plato as expounded in the tenth book of the Laws, the third with mediaeval Natural Theology as represented by six writers, St. Anselm, Abelard, St. Thomas Aquinas, Raymond of Sebonde, Pietro Pomponazzi, and Lord Herbert of Cherbury. The inclusion of the thinker last named, who might at first seem to belong to the modern rather than to the mediaeval period, was suggested by the plan of Dr. Pfleiderer's Religionsphilosophie auf geschichtlicher Grundlage. Dr. Pfleiderer takes Spinoza as the first representative of the Philosophy of Religion, which he regards, on grounds which I have ventured to criticize, as a branch of speculation unknown alike to antiquity and to the Middle Ages. I cannot for my own part draw so sharp a line between the Philosophy of Religion and the Natural Theology which admittedly existed in those earlier periods. No one can be more conscious than myself of the superficiality of the treatment which is here accorded to a subject requiring and deserving a far more thorough investigation. I can only plead in my own excuse that an Oxford college tutor can only undertake work such as belongs to the Lectureship which I was privileged to hold from 1911 to 1914, if he is prepared to accomplish less than might reasonably be demanded from a lecturer able to devote the whole or even the major part of his time to the duties of the lectureship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology: Or Evidences of the Existence and Attributes of the Deity, Collected From the Appearances of Nature It was the original design of the publishers to have merely attached the plates and references Of Paxton, which have been published m England and m this country in a separate volume, to the text of Dr. Paley. It Was, however, suggested to them that the value of their edition might be increased by the addition of Notes, and they had made arrangements for this purpose and were going on with the Work, when Mr. Paxton' s' edition of the Natural' Theology fell into their hands, containing, beside the plates, a cons1de1 able number of Notes. From these notes a selection has been' made of such as seemed most valuable and interesting. A' number of Notes have also been made up of quotations from the excellent treatise of Mr. Charles Bell on Animal Mechanics, published In the Library of Useful Knowledge a tract which cannot 'be too highly recommended to the perusal of those Who take pleasure m studying the indications of a wise and be nevolent Providence in the works Of creation. Book excerpt: First published in 1802, "Natural Theology" was written in defense of the teleological argument. His opening statement sets this stage by supposing that if he found a watch upon the ground, then examined its parts, he would necessarily conclude that it was designed for a purpose. His watchmaker analogy is still a favorite of many as a starting point for showing that such complexity cannot possibly have come into existence without an intelligent mind creating it. "Natural Theology" attempts to show that recognizing marks of design and intelligence in nature is not begging the question, but is instead drawing an inevitable conclusion about the nature of design. "Paley's arguments for God and for Christianity still provide the backbone for much of contemporary apologetics." Norman Geisler Co-Founder of Southern Evangelical Seminary Author of Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics "Modern apologists will do well to read and study the classical arguments. The strong appeal to logic and reason, as is evidenced in Paley, is a contrast to the feel-good subjective arguments often presented in the present postmodern world." Doy Moyer Professor of Philosophy and Biblical Studies, Florida College

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology in the Nineteenth Century Mr. Darwin, not on account of his views as to evolution, but because of the valuable additions which, in the course of his labours on that subject, he has made to our know ledge of Natural History, and in deference to the position which he holds in the scientific world. But any one acquainted with the University of Cambridge forty years ago, will be aware that, at that time, a far greater claim than that which Mr. Darwin now has for the distinction, would have utterly failed to obtain it for him, if coupled with the views which he holds as to evolution. But the new scientific doctrine, so far as it can be said to have established itself in the creed of Naturalists of highest repute, has the effect, I am persuaded, to fortify rather than to weaken the argument of design. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural Theology It follows from what we have said that in the Scholastic philosophy Natural Theology is no um essential adjunct, no mere afterthought, but a substantive and vital part of the system, without which it would be radically incomplete. It claims to establish from assured first principles the exist ence of'a Supreme Being, distinct from the finite and mutable things of experience. It maintains, further, that though the limitations of the human intellect render all our knowledge of Him inade quate, we are not wholly ignorant of His nature. There are certain attributes which can be affirmed of Him with certainty, though they are His in a manner more 'perfect than any which we can imagine. Above all, He is' intelligent and free, and therefore possessed of personality. In Him it finds the source and origin of all finite beings, and the final cause in view of which such beings exist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology: Or Rational Theism This volume presents the substance of lectures on the subject, given to students in the author's recent relation as President of Pennsylvania College. He was led to this method of instruction by the absence of any suitable text-book covering the various forms of the theistic evidences. Though the matter is here somewhat rearranged and reshaped, the general discussion has been determined by the needs of the College class room and the purpose of furnishing a reasoned and correct view of the truth on this incomparably important subject. The aim of the book, therefore, is, not to offer any new or original view of the theistic question, but to bring together the various approved evidences and furnish a compendious statement of them as they now stand in the best accredited thought and knowledge of our times. It is didactic, rather than polemical. The difficulty of the undertaking has been fully appreciated. No subject could be named, the discussion of which would lead through such a mass of conflicting metaphysics or traverse more varied and antagonistic speculation.
