Book Human Toxicology

Download or read book Human Toxicology written by J. Descotes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-09-02 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent volume was designed and edited with two major ideas in mind: firstly, the field of clinical toxicology is changing and an acknowledgement of these changes is warranted; secondly, no comprehensive compilation of recently published case reports of, and clinical studies on, human poisonings is available, which is in sharp contrast to the closely related field of drug-induced side-effects. The book focusses on issues of recent concern, or issues poorly documented in the past. It is important that clinical toxicologists gain a better knowledge of all the available techniques of toxicological analysis. A better understanding of the way a sound interpretation of results should be conducted for the benefit of the patient's management, and a comprehensive set of data on the kinetics of the most common pharmaceutical drugs and many chemicals is required. Human Toxicology is a timely reference work which will be welcomed by a broad audience of toxicology professionals.

Download or read book Fungi of Australia written by P. Brandon Matheny and published by Fungi of Australia. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family Inocybaceae are a diverse cosmopolitan group of gilled fungi. Until now, only a small number of species had been described from Australia, but with this major revision, a total of 137 species are recognized, of which 101 are new to science. Ninety percent of these species (121 of the 137) are found only in Australia. Phylogenetic work shows that the family can be divided into seven main groups, of which six are now recorded from Australia, making this country one of the major centers of diversity for the family. They are all thought to be ectomycorrhizal, that is they form mutually beneficial associations with the roots of plants, and are found on soil and amid litter in wet- and dry-sclerophyll shrublands, woodlands and forests, and cool or warm temperate rainforests. Many are small and easily overlooked, but their diversity of color and delicate structure make them attractive to those with an eye for detail.- This authoritative account provides a major advance in knowledge for this diverse and widespread group with detailed descriptions, identification keys, and phylogenetic trees based on DNA sequences generated during the work. Every species is illustrated with colored plates and/or line drawings of microscopic features. Fungi of Australia: Inocybaceae is a useful reference for professional and semi-professional mycologists in Australia and around the world.

Book Psychedelic Neuroscience

Book excerpt: We are in the midst of what is being called the ‘psychedelic renaissance’ with growing interest into how psychedelics alter consciousness, brain function and brain connectivity. The acute, often profound, effects of the psychedelic experience can induce lasting improvements in mental health demonstrating that chemistry forms the basis of mystical experience, consciousness and mental wellbeing. This volume is a collection of chapters by world leaders in fields of neurobiology, neuropsychiatry, psychology, ethnography and pharmacology, addressing the neurobiological mechanisms of action of various classic and atypical psychedelics, their therapeutic potential as well as the possible risks associated with their use

Book Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry E Book

Download or read book Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry E Book written by John A. Yagiela and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2010-03-19 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use your knowledge of pharmacology to enhance oral care! Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry, 6th Edition describes how to evaluate a patient’s health and optimize dental treatment by factoring in the drugs they take. It explores the basic fundamentals of pharmacology, special topics such as pain control, fear and anxiety, and oral complications of cancer therapy, and most importantly, the actions of specific drug groups on the human body. Whether you’re concerned about the drugs a patient is already taking or the drugs you prescribe for treatment, this book helps you reduce risk and provide effective dental care. An emphasis on the dental applications of pharmacology relates drugs to dental considerations in clinical practice. Dental aspects of many drug classes are expanded to include antibiotics, analgesics, and anesthetics. The Alternative Medicine in Dentistry chapter discusses chemicals used as alternative medicines and assesses their potential benefits and risks. The Nonopioid Analgesics chapter groups together non-opioid analgesics, nonsterioidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antirheumatic and antigout drugs, making these easier to locate and study. Coverage of the endocrine system includes four separate chapters for the most comprehensive coverage. Drug Interactions in Clinical Dentistry appendix lists potential interactions between drugs a patient is taking for nondental conditions and drugs that may be used or prescribed during dental treatment, including effects and recommendations. Glossary of Abbreviations appendix includes the most common abbreviations used for drugs or conditions. New Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics chapter covers the effects of genetic traits of patients on their responses to drugs. A NEW introductory section offers tips for the study of dental pharmacology and relates pharmacology to dental considerations. An updated discussion of drug-drug interactions covers the harmful effects of mixing medications. Coverage of adverse effects and mechanisms of COX-2 inhibitors, antibiotic prophylaxis, and antiplaque agents explains the dental risks relating to common drug treatments.

Guidelines to evaluation, diagnosis and treatment include examinations of the source, toxic dose, toxicokinetics, clinical signs, minimum database, confirming tests, treatment progress and differential diagnosis for each specific toxicant. Coverage of common poisonous substances includes grapes and raisins, nicotine, mercury, mushrooms, Christmas-time plants, and snake and spider venoms. Toxicological Concepts section provides information on toxicologic principles such as history taking, providing supportive care, and managing emergency treatment. General Exposures section addresses nontraditional toxicology such as indoor environmental air, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and toxicities in pregnant and lactating animals. Miscellaneous Toxicant Groups section covers commonly encountered specific toxicants, the proper use of diagnostic laboratories, use of human poison control centers, and antidotes for specific toxins. More than 50 international contributors provide up-to-date, authoritative advice on treating poisonings and intoxications. 8 NEW chapters cover topics including legal considerations in toxicology cases, responding to mass exposures, and poisonings in birds, small mammals, and geriatric patients. NEW color insert shows 85 of the most commonly encountered toxic substances for at-a-glance identification. UPDATED Signs and Symptoms index makes it easier to find information on a toxic agent by presenting signs rather than requiring the formulation of a diagnosis. UPDATED information on agents most likely to cause a toxic reaction includes natural flea products and an expanded section on human medications. NEW quick-access format with bold headings and convenient tables and boxes allows quick retrieval of information in emergency situations.
