Book Overhead Costs as a Strategic Factor in Fluctuations in Economic Activity

Download or read book Overhead Costs as a Strategic Factor in Fluctuations in Economic Activity written by Robert L. Hill and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of overhead cost has as yet not found an adequate place in business cycle research, in spite of the fact that Professor J.M. Clark has opened the avenue twenty-eight years ago. This study makes a modest attempt to fill the gap by showing the relationship of the problem of overhead costs to fundamental issues of business cycle theory. While Professor Clark is interested primarily in the influence of demand upon expansion of capacities, the emphasis in this analysis is upon the impaceof production and particularly innovations upon the structure of overhead costs. The approach is theoretically not statistically, oriented. The increase in the relative share of overhead costs in total costs as well as their absolute growth has contributed greatly to the rigidity of the cost structure of modern industry and has increased the sensitivity of firms to fluctuations in sales upon which the utilization of capacity depends. This study attempts a systematic analysis of the effect of this situation. The analysis is carried out under a double aspect: with regard, first, to an individual firm; and second, to the economy as a whole. In such a way it might be shown that also in this restricted field of economic research the problems cannot be adequately stated, much less solved, without combining these two aspects.

Book Interpreting Macroeconomics

Download or read book Interpreting Macroeconomics written by Roger E. Backhouse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Macroeconomics explores a variety of different approaches to macroeconomic thought. The book considers a number of historiographical and methodological positions, as well as analyzing various important episodes in the development of macroeconomics, before during and after the Keynesian revolution. Roger Backhouse shows that the full richness of these developments can only by brought out by approaches which blend both relativism and absolutism, and historical and rational reconstructions. Examples discussed include Hobson, Keynes and Friedman.

Book Business Performance Measurement and Management

Download or read book Business Performance Measurement and Management written by Paolo Taticchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-22 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring and managing the performance of a business is one of the most genuine desires of management. Balanced scorecard, the performance prism and activity-based management are the most popular frameworks in this setting. Based on the findings of R.G. Eccles’ acclaimed "Performance Measurement Manifesto (1991)" this book introduces new contexts and themes of application and presents emerging research areas related to business performance measurement and management, e.g. SMEs and sustainability. As a result of the 1st International Summer School Piero Lunghi on "Perspectives of Business Performance Management" this book is written both for students and academics, as well as for practitioners looking for new, yet proven ways to measure and manage business performance.

Book Lionel Robbins on the Principles of Economic Analysis

Download or read book Lionel Robbins on the Principles of Economic Analysis written by Lionel Robbins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lionel Robbins (1898–1984) is best known to economists for his Essay on the Nature and Significance of Economic Science (1932 and 1935). To the wider public he is well known for the 'Robbins Report' of the 1960s on Higher Education, which recommended a major expansion of university education in Britain. However, throughout his academic career – at Oxford and the London School of Economics in the 1920s, and as Professor of Economics at the School from 1929 to 1961 – he was renowned as an exceptionally gifted teacher. Generations of students remember his lectures for their clarity and comprehensiveness and for his infectious enthusiasm for his subject. Besides his famous graduate seminar his most important and influential courses at LSE were the Principles of Economic Analysis, which he gave in the 1930s and again in the late 1940s and 1950s, as well as the History of Economic Thought, from 1953 until long after his official retirement. This book publishes for the first time the manuscript notes Robbins used for his lectures on the Principles of Economic Analysis from 1929/30 to 1934/40. At the outset of his career he took the advice of a senior colleague to prepare his lectures by writing them out fully before he presented them; the full notes for most of his pre-war lectures survive and are eminently decipherable. Since he made two major revisions of the lectures in the 1930s the Principles notes show both the development of his own thought and the way he incorporated the major theoretical innovations made by younger economists at LSE, such as John Hicks and Nicholas Kaldor, or elsewhere, notably Joan Robinson. He intended to turn his lecture notes into a book, abandoning the project only when he was asked to chair the Committee on Higher Education in 1960. This volume is not exactly the book he wanted to write, but it is a unique record of what was taught to senior undergraduate and graduate economists in those 'years of high theory'. It will be of interest to all economists interested in the development of economics in the twentieth century.

Book Reality and Accounting

Download or read book Reality and Accounting written by Richard Mattessich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses and summarizes the revived interest in reality issues (ontology) within accounting, economics, and the information sciences, with a view to informing scholars from these different disciplines about each other’s endeavours in ontological research. Even more importantly, the book aims at familiarizing scholars from various disciplines with an evolutionary approach for examining questions about reality in the social sciences. The book is based on a partly pluralistic approach that assures unity in diversity. Unity, because all existence arises from physical reality; diversity, because emergent properties create biological and social realities that cannot be reduced to physical phenomena. Hence, the book recognizes not only concrete but also abstract entities. It shows, however, that the actualization of these abstract entities requires objectification and concrete manifestation. This pluralistic approach is central to this book. It also is a challenge to those who reject abstract entities as socially real, as well as to those who defend a non-realist position. The major task of this book is to explore proposals towards a uniform ontological basis. This uniform and universal presentation extends beyond traditional ontology (asking ‘what is real?’) to such questions as ‘on which reality level is something real?’ and ‘in which (temporal and modal) way is it real?’. Such an extended analysis) is relevant to accountants, economists, information scientists, other social scientists as well as philosophers.
