Book The Cultic Motif in the Book of Daniel

Download or read book The Cultic Motif in the Book of Daniel written by Winfried Vogel and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique study of the theology of the book of Daniel examines the cultic motif within the book as it relates to space and time. Numerous references and allusions to cult are investigated with linguistic, literary, and contextual analyses. The findings are then related to the main theological themes of the book such as judgment, eschatology, kingdom, and worship. It is evident that the idea of cult plays a dominant role in Daniel, and that it demonstrates the intention of the author to present the issue of conflict of two opposing systems of cult and worship. For all who are interested in an exegesis of Daniel that pays dutiful attention to the theology of Daniel, The Cultic Motif in the Book of Daniel is a must-read.

Book The Background And Contents Of Paul s Cultic Atonement Metaphors

Download or read book The Background And Contents Of Paul s Cultic Atonement Metaphors written by Stephen Finlan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of Gentile and Jewish religious and literary descriptions of sacrificial and expulsion rituals provides a useful background to the study of Paul's metaphorical use of sacrifice and scapegoat to characterize the significance of the death of Jesus. In addition to offering an overview of Paul's use of cultic metaphors and an assessment of Paul's synthesis of martyrology and cultic metaphor, this work shows how Paul uses still other metaphors (acquittal, reconciliation, adoption) to picture the beneficial after-effects of that death. Book The Purification Offering in the Priestly Literature

Download or read book The Purification Offering in the Priestly Literature written by N. Kiuchi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this incisive study is to clarify the symbolism of the so-called 'sin' (hatta't) offering, better understood as a purification offering. A major concern of the work is to explain the variety of the atonement ceremonies in Leviticus in which the 'purification offering' appears. This variety has hitherto been explained as the result of tradition-historical development (Janowski), or in terms of degrees of uncleanness (Milgrom). Dr Kiuchi presents a new way of looking at the evidence for the offering with special reference to the two incidents in Leviticus 10. The concept of atonement (kipper) includes both purification and guilt-bearing, for when the priest purifies sancta he bears the guilt associated with the uncleanness. The varieties of blood manipulation are determined by the occasion, while the varieties of disposal of the sacrificial flesh hinge on whether the agent of the atonement is also a beneficiary of it.

Book Sacrifice and Gender in Biblical Law

Download or read book Sacrifice and Gender in Biblical Law written by Nicole J. Ruane and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Hebrew Bible's numerous laws about sacrificial procedure to understand the significance of gender in sacrificial rituals and the reasons that gender distinctions are so vital in these acts. Gender selection of both victims and participants is an intrinsic aspect of the nature and purpose of each rite, affecting its form and function, as well as its legitimacy. Sacrifice and Gender in Biblical Law considers the laws of the firstborn, the rite of the red cow, laws of slaughter, rituals of purification, and other offerings. It shows that these laws regulate material wealth and contribute to the construction of social roles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerful book, Walter Brueggemann moves the discussion of Old Testament theology beyond the dominant models of previous generations. Brueggemann focuses on the metaphor and imagery of the courtroom trial in order to regard the theological substance of the Old Testament as a series of claims asserted for Yahweh, the God of Israel. This provides a context that attends to pluralism in every dimension of the interpretive process and suggests links to the plurality of voices of our time.

Book Creation and Chaos Talk

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-06-07
  • ISBN : 1630874175
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Creation and Chaos Talk written by Eric M. Vail and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talk about chaos is pervasive. Biblical scholars, theologians, and scientists have been using the word chaos for some time, occasionally mingling ideas across disciplines around the shared word. Quite often, discussions of chaos center on the issues of creation's origin and nature, as well as on God's creative methods and relationship to creation. Eric M. Vail investigates the current uses of the word chaos in those areas. A new way of articulating creation out of nothing is offered as both helpful and appropriate in our current milieu. He suggests where we ought to focus our use of the word chaos in Christian discourse and argues that chaos is more fitting for naming where creation has gone awry rather than for naming that state out of which creation comes to be.

After a comparative analysis of the Mesopotamian and biblical material Chirichigno examines the social background to debt slavery in Israel, the various slave laws in the Pentateuch (in order to delimit the chattel-slave laws from the debt-slave laws), and the biblical manumission laws themselves.
