This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Constitutional History of Tennessee I am not unconscious of the peril of writing of the events of the last forty-five years, but the work would have been incomplete without the considera tion of that period, and I have endeavored to be fair in all respects. I have regarded it as a duty to discuss frankly the insufficiency of the Constitution of 1870, for the present needs of the State, and to criticise freely the excessive conservatism of the people in re taining it so long. I am indebted for valuable assistance to Mrs. John C. Brown and Mr. W. S. Morgan of Nashville. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Andrew Johnson Military Governor of Tennessee Classic Reprint

Download or read book Andrew Johnson Military Governor of Tennessee Classic Reprint written by Clifton R. Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andrew Johnson Military Governor of Tennessee This book, as its title implies, is an attempt to trace the personality of Andrew Johnson through the years 1862-1865, when the burden of military government and reconstruction in Tennessee rested principally upon his shoulders. With this purpose in mind, I have refrained from going into several tempting by-paths of the subject. The military administration in West Tennessee, for example, for which not Johnson, but the generals of the regular army stationed at Memphis were primarily responsible, has been scarcely touched upon; so, too, the working of the Federal trade regulations in Tennessee, a subject on which a separate monograph might be written. Nor have I carried my account beyond the spring of 1865, when Johnson left Tennessee for Washington. The subsequent details of reconstruction in the state may be found in J. W. Fertig's "The Secession and Reconstruction of Tennessee," which also treats of the period of the war, but which was written before the Johnson papers in the Library of Congress were available for study. As is apparent from the footnotes, I have based my account largely upon the Johnson papers, the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, and the contemporary newspapers. Of these last, the Nashville Union is a source of the highest importance. It is, of course, polemical and violently partisan, but it contains a surprising amount of detailed news of any local occurrence of interest and notices and discusses all references to Tennessee affairs which it discovers in exchanges; and its assertions can usually be checked from other sources. I have made little use of Brownlow's Knoxville Whig, a file of which is in the Yale University library, or of "Parson Brownlow's Book," for the obvious reason that, in this period of his career, the choleric parson was consciously blinking facts and coining political capital out of superlatives. Book From Classical to Modern Chemistry

Download or read book From Classical to Modern Chemistry written by Peter J. T. Morris and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2002 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chemists today have either taken part in, or been affected by, the chemical revolution that has taken place over the course of the last century. Developments in instrumentation have changed not just what chemists do, but also how they think about chemistry. New and exciting areas of previously inaccessible research have been opened up as a direct result of this revolution. This is the first book to examine this instrumental revolution and goes on to assess the impact on chemical practice in areas ranging from organic chemistry and biochemistry to environmental analysis and process control, thus demonstrating how fundamental and extensive are the changes that have occurred. With contributions from internationally recognised specialists, this lavishly illustrated book provides a focal point for any historian of chemistry or chemist with an interest in this fascinating topic. This book is published in association with the Science Museum, London, UK and the Chemical Heritage Foundation, Philadelphia.
