Book Studies in Several Literatures Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Several Literatures Classic Reprint written by Harry Thurston Peck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Several Literatures Several years ago, Mr. Andrew Carnegie, who is always doing something interesting and unexpected, gave to the public his opinion as to the literary and ethical value of Homer. Not a few persons were in clined to mock at this deliverance and to recall the old maxim that the cobbler should stick to his last. Mr. Carnegie, they said, might know more about iron and steel than any other living man; but why should he put himself forward as an authority on Classical literature? He himself would certainly not have listened with much respect to the views of Professor Gildersleeve or the late Sir Richard Jebb on the subject of iron tubing and steel rails. Much study about authors whose books the student has never read is of doubt ful utility. A wiser plan is to use a very brief account of the literature in connection with a considerable amount of reading in the literature itself arranged chronologically. In studying Part II, therefore, emphasis should be placed upon the sug gested readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Two Literatures My dear Moore, Do you remember, at the time when we were both living in the Temple, and our talks used to begin with midnight, and go on until the first glimmerings of dawn shivered among the trees, your trees and mine; do you remember how often we have discussed, well, I suppose everything which I speak of in these studies in the two literatures which we both chiefly care about? Our discussions, indeed, never came to an end; for they were the interchange of ideas, the noting, for one another's benefit (or, say, amusement) of sensations; and just because we both wanted to get at the truth of things, and both realized how many aspects truth has, neither of us had the least interest in getting the better of one another in an argument, or in thinking of any argument as finally settled. On first principles we were always, I think, agreed; and how often in regard to individual applications of them! Has either of us ever doubted that a work of art has but one reason for existence, that it should be a work of art, a moment of the eternity of beauty? One forgets, sometimes, that it has entered into the brains of men to doubt anything so obvious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Short Studies in Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Studies in Literature Classic Reprint written by Hamilton Wright Mabie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies in Literature That these brief chapters may prove helpful to readers of books who desire to become students of literature, is the hope which the writer ventures to cherish in the face of defects more obvious to him than to the most unsympathetic critic. These studies are not critical but interpretative; they are neither exhaustive nor inclusive; they are mainly hints and suggestions. Each chapter might be elaborated into a volume. If they serve to indicate the leading lines of literary development, the fundamental divisions and distinctions, the deep and vital tendencies, they will accomplish the end for which they were written. That they represent deep convictions concerning the significance of literature rather than a purely critical attitude, will be apparent to the most indifferent reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of censorship in modern Britain For Victorian lawmakers and judges, the question of whether a book should be allowed to circulate freely depended on whether it was sold to readers whose mental and moral capacities were in doubt, by which they meant the increasingly literate and enfranchised working classes. The law stayed this way even as society evolved. In 1960, in the obscenity trial over D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, the prosecutor asked the jury, "Is it a book that you would even wish your wife or your servants to read?" Christopher Hilliard traces the history of British censorship from the Victorians to Margaret Thatcher, exposing the tensions between obscenity law and a changing British society. Hilliard goes behind the scenes of major obscenity trials and uncovers the routines of everyday censorship, shedding new light on the British reception of literary modernism and popular entertainments such as the cinema and American-style pulp fiction and comic books. He reveals the thinking of lawyers and the police, authors and publishers, and politicians and ordinary citizens as they wrestled with questions of freedom and morality. He describes how supporters and opponents of censorship alike tried to remake the law as they reckoned with changes in sexuality and culture that began in the 1960s. Based on extensive archival research, this incisive and multifaceted book reveals how the issue of censorship challenged British society to confront issues ranging from mass literacy and democratization to feminism, gay rights, and multiculturalism.

This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Mediaeval Life and Literature After receiving his bachelor's degree he remained another year in New Haven as a graduate student. During that time he devoted himself with increased ardor to the special branches of study in which from the outset he had been interested. In the following year he was made tutor in English. This position he held until 1890, when he was appointed assistant pro fessor of the same subject. At the meeting. Of the Corporation of the University in May, 1893, he was elected by it to the chair of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres. Happily married to a wife of congenial tastes, who speedily learned to sympathize with him in the studies which he had made peculiarly his own, he had every reason to expect a long career of usefulness, which would be attended with distinction to himself and would confer distinction upon the institution with which he was connected. But his health had never been vigorous, and in the very summer vacation fol lowing his appointment a fever, which came upon him almost without warning, and which seemed at first of slight importance, carried him off after an illness that lasted little more than a week. He died on the 25th of July, 1893, at the age of thirty-three. He lies buried at Litchfield. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature, Vol. 7 In the standard modern Spanish, the language of Castile, the only signs denoting sibilant sounds are ch, s, and x (when popularly pronounced s). In the older speech this particular class of consonants was much more extensive and embraced sounds which now show little or no traces of their former quality. Altogether, Old Spanish had seven different sibilant sounds, represented by the following signs: c or c before e, i; c before a, o, u; z; s; ss; x; g before e, i; j; ch. In general it may be said that the sibilant nature of these Old Spanish signs needs little demonstration, being well vouched for by the testimony of grammarians, who, of necessity, had to define them as they best could, and by the practices common to the Arabic and Jewish portions of the Spanish-speaking people, who, writing Spanish with Arabic or Hebrew characters, used sibilant signs for all these sounds. The most important of the utterances of the grammarians have been collected by the eminent lexicographer Cuervo, whose article, Disquisiciones sobre antigua ortografia y pronunciacion castellanas (Revue hispanique, II, x ff.), appeared while the present treatise was in course of preparation, and has been its chief source of information as to this particular evidence. Only a few confirmatory notices can be added as a supplement to his citations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in Literature

Download or read book Studies in Literature written by Maurice Francis Egan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Literature: Some Words About Chaucer, and Other Essays Everything concerning the most cheerful, most natural, and most sympathetic of all English poets, Chaucer, has come to be of interest. Whether his name had originally anything to do with footwear or not, or whether it was derived from some small office about the court will perhaps soon be decided by Mr. Skeat; but there is no question that, even in this apparently unimportant matter of philology, the public testifies more than usual concern. The interest in Chaucer is no doubt due to his incomparable charm as a storyteller, the human quality in his poems, and the increase of respect for the English language among English-speaking people. Chaucer has been examined by the analysts of speech from every point of view, and what the English have left undone the Germans have minutely completed; but there is one thing which most interpreters of Chaucer have failed to grasp, and that is the impossibility of judging the standards of the fourteenth century by those of the nineteenth. As an axiom they are willing to admit that it is illogical to judge the ethical point of view of one age considered from the changed attitude of another. Every expositor of literary history, from Dryden to Lounsbury, from Voltaire to Taine, admits this; but only in the abstract.
