Book Studies in Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Christianity Classic Reprint written by Borden Parker Bowne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Christianity The Essays have not been written for special ists, nor for professional unbelievers, but solely to relieve some of the difficulties under which popular religious thought labors because of misunderstanding. Indeedl the entire volume might be described as _an aid to progressive or thodoxy, or as_a_n to combine the new theology with the __old religion. That the future as well as the past belongs to the old religion I am perfectly sure. This religion has often been ignorantly and inadequately conceived, and even caricatured at times by its disciples, but it has the advantage over all its competitors and proposed substitutes of being alive; and life counts for much in organic history, spiritual as well as physical. At the same time the old religion may need a new theology for its better expression and formulation, and in this sense a new theology may be a valuable aid to the old religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Religion That which we see, touch, -ih a word, which appears to all or any of the senses, - is body, or firm, or appearance; and that which is not body, but the embodied, not appearance, but the appearer, we call spirit. Spirit is then the invisible force, behind or in every thing that appears. The outward is not reality, but the form of it: the outward is the manifestation of the inward: the sensuous is the apparition of the spiritual. The human frame, no more than the stars and flowers, but equally with them, are appearances of an in visible reality, - of spirit. The star is bony, so the flower, so our form all equally impres sions on the senses of an invisible force: the star one form of spirit, the flower another, the human frame another - all equally wonderful, divine, mystic. It is not in a figurative sense that flowers and stars are our brothers. They and we are alike the out-putting of invisible force: we are stars glowing here and there in the immeasurable arch of God's being; we are flowers springing upward from the earth and withering to it again and the flower and the star, like unto us, are mortal forms of immortal spirit. Download or read book Religious Studies for Laymen written by Charles Elmer Beals and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Studies for Laymen: Studies in Theology Three things are attempted in the present revision of the First S eries of Studies in Theology. First of all the arrangement of the chapters has been changed. The purpose has been to secure, if possible, a more consist ent order in the presentation of subjects. It has been difficult to do this because each lecture was first given entirely independent of the others, and therefore had no necessary logical connection with them. The purpose only was to consider related lines of thought in order to secure a point of view from which to take up later some of the problems suggested thereby. The present attempt to secure a logical order can be but imperfect for the reason that no such order originally existed. Book Studies in the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint written by George Galloway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Philosophy of Religion Without denying the high merits of Hegel's work, it is clear to us that it has also grave defects. In his reaction against Schleiermacher and the Romantic School, Hegel ignores the great import ance of feeling in the religious consciousness. If the feeling of dependence were the essence of religion, then, he remarks scornfully, the dog would be the most religious of creatures. The animal, we are told, feels, but it is the characteristic of man to think. True, but man also feels, and he does not feel as the animal feels. It is safe to say that if man were a purely thinking being, he would not be the religious being that experience shows him to be. Occupying the standpoint of an all-embracing idealism, Hegel gives no adequate psychological analysis of the religious consciousness. He does not treat of faith in its specific character; and though he indicates the dialectic movement by which feeling passes into representation, he fails to recognise how essential the interplay of sentiment, emotion, and idea is in the maturest spiritual experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Mystical Religion NO one doubts today that one of the main approaches to the meaning of religion is through the nature of the soul of man. It would no doubt be a mistake to push the method of the inner way to the exclusion of all other methods of studying religion, but it is certain that no body can tell us what religion is until he has sounded the deeps within man, and has dealt with the testimony of personal consciousness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Science and Religion It is proper, also, that the author should from his own experience bear testimony that the engrossing cares of a clergyman, in the midst of which these studies have been pursued, need not dull one's interest in scientific study; and, on the other hand, that prolonged study of science does not of itself diminish one's respect for Christianity, and one's interest in the all-important work it is accomplishing for the world. The first chapter was published nearly in its present form in the New Englander, October 1871. The next four chapters appeared at various inter vals in the Bibliotheca Sacra; these have, however, been rewritten and enlarged to meet the demands of the present time. Chapter sixth is in the line of the author's original investigations, and will, with its illustrations, it is hoped, enlarge some what the boundary of human knowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Life: Studies in the Science of Religion This question is already being raised, and it is bound to be asked more and more often and in louder and louder tones. It is no Sign of enmity toward the Church or of coldness toward Christianity, but rather an incident of the expanding spirituality of men who find in Jesus the final meaning of life, and in evan gelical Christianity the essential germ of future te ligious progress. This germ demands to be under stood. It is necessary to perceive that the problems here suggested do not concern matters of mere tem porary expediency. They go to the bottom of life they concern the very essence of religion, of reli gious forces, and of the mind in which religion lives and through which it works for the healing of the nations. If this be true there is not a ray of reasonable hope for the solution of these prob lems unless in some way - either by a happy hit of uninstructed zeal or else by definite knowledge of the psychical factors involved - we manage to put ourselves into line with the mind of man as it is.
