Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Psychiatry, Vol. 1 In the early winter of 1903, Dr. Allen McLane Hamilton invited a number of physicians to spend an evening with him for the purpose of discussing the advisability of founding a society for the promotion of the interests of psychiatry. This conference was held and, as a result of it, the constitution and by-laws of the Psychiatrical Society of New York were adopted on March 2, 1903. The Society has grown rapidly but has always retained its original semi-private character. The meetings have been held at the invitation of individual members, but any physician who has shown especial interest or achievements in psychiatry is eligible for membership. Since its foundation, four meetings a year have taken place, at which original contributions have been read and discussions carried on on various subjects connected with psychiatry. Many of the papers have been published, but until now no attempt has been made to collect them in permanent form. When the question of publication came up it was found that an issue of all the contributions would be too great an undertaking. So some papers were chosen for publication now, while others were left for subsequent volumes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in Clinical Psychiatry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Clinical Psychiatry Classic Reprint written by Lewis Campbell Bruce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Clinical Psychiatry Advances in the knowledge of mental diseases are slow, partly on account of the difficulty of the subject, and partly owing to the conditions under which these diseases are at present studied. I refer to the asylum system of treating the insane. Before a patient can be admitted to one of these institutions the disease process must be fully developed, with the result that the earlier stages can only be studied on very rare occasions. In such fully developed cases the mental aspect of the disease attracts attention by the prominence and bizarre character of the mental symptoms, and so it has happened that from distant times up to the present day the tendency to confuse the study of pathological psychology and the under lying physical disease has done much to prevent the advance of knowledge. When psychology is divorced from psychiatry, and the study of psychiatry is prosecuted along the lines of advance in general medicine, our knowledge of mental diseases cannot fail to be added to. The matter contained in the following pages is based on work so conducted: psychology is omitted; pathology, in so far as the changes in the brain cells and nerve fibres are concerned, is practically ignored, because until we know what the causes of such changes are we are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychiatry, Vol. 1: A Clinical Treatise on Diseases of the Fore-Brain, Based Upon a Study of Its Structure, Functions, and Nutrition; The Anatomy, Psychology, and Chemistry of the Brain The title-page refers to the fundamental studies indispensable to an understanding of the clinical manifestations of mental diseases. My intention Of elucidating diseases Of the fore-brain in this way is based upon the conviction that our knowledge Of them Should be obtained, as all sound clinical knowledge is acquired, by a study Of the structure, the function, and the nutrition Of each organ. Hitherto the science of psychiatry has been too largely subjective. Many of its teachings, which are not based upon the studies just referred to, had better be forgotten. Naturally enough a knowledge of clinical phenomena precedes in time the knowledge of the fundamental facts underlying these phenomena. Morbid symptoms are not recognized by their scientific sub stratum, but in studying this substratum we are actuated by the desire to fathom the phenomena of disease. It follows, therefore. Book A Text Book of Psychiatry for Physicians and Students Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Psychiatry for Physicians and Students Classic Reprint written by Leonardo Bianchi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Psychiatry for Physicians and Students To my mind, the idea of germination and implantation Should be considered most important. On the original wild plant there is ingrafted a bud from one more cultivated. This develops, and gives Off in turn branches and fruit these are not the exclusive product of the bud grafted, but are the work of the whole plant, which fur nishes the bud with nutritive material; and, according to the greater or less receptivity of the old stem, the fruit will bear some of the characters of the wild plant, or maintain entirely those of the graft. At the very least, however, the fruit embodies the essential characteristics of the latter, which has sprouted and grown, hyper nourished by the old stalk, and the seeds contain germinative elements which for the most 'part repeat the characters of the in grafted bud. If, however, this latter is weak, some of the characters of the'old plant may be repeated. So it is with the human mind. Nature is its vast domain, and all that exists therein its rightful patrimony. Nature is continually inserting grafts upon the old branches of the human understanding. The longer the action of its forces upon the senses, the more perfect these become, and the progressive adap tafion of man is the result of the increased receptive and assimilative power exhibited by the nervous. System towards the for Nature. This potentiality overcomes the law of habit, which woul to fix the mechanism in the senso-motor adaptations (vide L. Dumont and W. James), and enlarges the mental Sphere in new directions, so that there is a continual sprouting of the new buds ingrafted upon the great intellectual stem. Thus, human thought, from the narrow circle of the individual, widens gradually over the universe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Psychiatry, 1915-1916, Vol. 72: Published Under the Auspices of the American Medico-Psychological Association Society has in recent years manifested a sound and stimulating interest in the progress of psychiatry. We have begun to see the fruits of this attention in the crystallization Of some of its knowledge in legislation - much of it enlightened and beneficial in its results. Psychiatry, to meet the demands of an awakened public conscience for additional truth, is broadening the field of its inquiries. We, on our part, have devoted much time and study to the care Of the insane, and have accomplished much in the planning, construction and equipment of institutions for better housing, classification and treatment. For this purpose and under our advice and direction society, through its various units Of government, has applied millions and millions Of dollars for construction, and for upkeep, maintenance and treatment vast sums are annually expended, making it the largest, costliest, and best directed charity the world has ever known.
