Book The Reformation of Prophecy

Download or read book The Reformation of Prophecy written by G. Sujin Pak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protestant reformers found the prophet and biblical prophecy to be exceptionally effective for framing their reforming work under the authority of Scripture-for the true prophet speaks the Word of God alone and calls the people, their worship, and their beliefs and practices back to the Word of God. uses the prophet and biblical prophecy as a powerful lens through which to view many aspects of the reformers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. G. Sujin Pak argues that these prophetic concepts served the substantial purposes of articulating a theology of the priesthood of all believers, a biblical model of the pastoral office, a biblical vision of the reform of worship, and biblical processes for discerning right interpretation of Scripture. Pak demonstrates the ways in which understandings of the prophet and biblical prophecy contributed to the formation of distinct confessional identities. She goes on to demonstrate the waning of explicit prophetic terminology, particularly among the next generation of Protestant leadership. Eventually, she shows, the Protestant reformers concluded that the figure of the prophet carried with it as many problems as it did benefits, though they continued to give much time and attention to the exegesis of biblical prophetic writings.

Book When Time Shall Be No More

Download or read book When Time Shall Be No More written by Paul Boyer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans take the Bible at its word and turn to like-minded local ministers and TV preachers, periodicals and paperbacks for help in finding their place in God’s prophetic plan for mankind. And yet, influential as this phenomenon is in the worldview of so many, the belief in biblical prophecy remains a popular mystery, largely unstudied and little understood. When Time Shall Be No More offers for the first time an in-depth look at the subtle, pervasive ways in which prophecy belief shapes contemporary American thought and culture. Belief in prophecy dates back to antiquity, and there Paul Boyer begins, seeking out the origins of this particular brand of faith in early Jewish and Christian apocalyptic writings, then tracing its development over time. Against this broad historical overview, the effect of prophecy belief on the events and themes of recent decades emerges in clear and striking detail. Nuclear war, the Soviet Union, Israel and the Middle East, the destiny of the United States, the rise of a computerized global economic order—Boyer shows how impressive feats of exegesis have incorporated all of these in the popular imagination in terms of the Bible’s apocalyptic works. Reflecting finally on the tenacity of prophecy belief in our supposedly secular age, Boyer considers the direction such popular conviction might take—and the forms it might assume—in the post–Cold War era. The product of a four-year immersion in the literature and culture of prophecy belief, When Time Shall Be No More serves as a pathbreaking guide to this vast terra incognita of contemporary American popular thought—a thorough and thoroughly fascinating index to its sources, its implications, and its enduring appeal.

Book Prophecy in the Book of Daniel

Download or read book Prophecy in the Book of Daniel written by Ray C. Stedman and published by . This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Daniel, together with the book of Revelation, marvelously unfolds future events as God has ordained them in the program of history. Neither book has yet been completely fulfilled. By and large, God does not unfold the future to us--certainly not in detail. But what He does show us in the prophetic Scriptures is the general trend of events and where it will all end. If we want to know God's program for the future, it is essential that we understand the book of Daniel. We can also begin to understand what is happening today if we know what His prophetic program is.

Book Studies in the Prophecy of Jeremiah

Download or read book Studies in the Prophecy of Jeremiah written by G. Campbell Morgan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Prince of Bible Expositors" presents the stirring events of Jeremiah's career in this volume--one of the most oustanding works on this subject ever published. In these chapters, the character of this "prophet of strength and tears" is analyzed and appraised and his dealings with the people are carefully pursued and portrayed, while his "prophetic utterances which constituted the word of Jehovah to a decadent age" are interpreted in a masterly manner. This unabridged edition embraces the penetrating analysis and warm devotional spirit which characterizes all of Dr. Morgan's writing. The world has seen but one G. Campbell Morgan, whose messages are as popular, effective, and inspiring today in printed form as they were when preached from the pulpit. What the artist portrays with his brush, G. Campbell Morgan reveals with his pen, a pen that never rested from its labors in the cause of Christ.

Old Testament scholar Christopher R. Seitz has written Prophecy and Hermeneutics as a way of revisiting, from the ground floor up, what gave rise to studies of the prophets in our modern period. Book After Prophecy

Download or read book After Prophecy written by Tom Cheetham and published by Studies in Archetypal Psycholo. This book was released on 2007 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the status of religion in the Post-Prophetic Age, especially as seen through the eyes of the French Islamic scholar Henry Corbin. In lucid and simple prose, Cheetham explores the creative role of the imagination in the formative ground of the three great Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. For Corbin, engaging the soul of the world through the mediating power of the Imaginal is an act of love, a theme Cheetham expands through his analysis of such concepts as mystical poverty, contemplative knowledge, the luminosity of the earth, the theophanic vision, the Christ Angel, Incarnation, the divine sensorium, alchemical transformation, the spiritual humanism of Ivan Illich, Western iconoclasm, and the centrality of gnosis. This book offers a visionary alternative to the confusions of contemporary life. It speaks to believers and non-believers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Columbus returned to Europe in the final days of 1500, ending his third voyage to the Indies not in triumph but in chains. Seeking to justify his actions and protect his rights, he began to compile biblical texts and excerpts from patristic writings and medieval theology in a manuscript known as the Book of Prophecies. This unprecedented collection was designed to support his vision of the discovery of the Indies as an important event in the process of human salvation - a first step toward the liberation of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim domination. This work is part of a twelve-volume series produced by U.C.L.A.'s Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies which involved the collaboration of some forty scholars over the course of fourteen years. In this volume of the series, Roberto Rusconi has written a complete historical introduction to the Book of Prophecies, describing the manuscript's history and analyzing its principal themes. His edition of the documents, the only modern one, includes a complete critical apparatus and detailed commentary, while the facing-page English translations allow Columbus's work to be appreciated by the general public and scholars alike.
