Book The Biodynamic Orchard Book

Download or read book The Biodynamic Orchard Book written by Ehrenfried E. Pfeiffer and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the best advice for cultivating fruit trees, berries and shrubs using biodynamic methods, with the aim of harvesting healthy fruit free of pesticides. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer discusses the principles of tree biology before describing the measures that can be taken to develop a pest-free orchard without the use of chemicals, including soil preparation, the selection of trees for planting, issues of transplanting and pruning, the application of pastes, green cover crops, and pest control. Michael Maltas ran fruit tree experiments on his biodynamic farm in Missouri for four years. The results are recorded in a highly practical annual spraying schedule for orchards, which is reproduced in this book. A month-by-month calendar gives information on specific methods and controls, based on Maltas's extensive experience. This is an invaluable book with practical advice on all aspects of planning and maintaining a healthy orchard. This is a thoroughly revised and updated combined edition ofBiodynamic Treatment of Fruit Trees, Berries and Shrubs by Ehrenfried Pfeiffer andOrchard Pest Management and Spray Schedule by Michael Maltas. Published in association with the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association of North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) of 1948, devastated Palestinian lives and shattered Palestinian society, culture, and economy. It also nipped in the bud a nascent grassroots, binational alliance between Arab and Jewish citrus growers. This significant and unprecedented partnership was virtually erased from the collective memory of both Israelis and Palestinians when the Nakba decimated villages and populations in a matter of months. In The Lost Orchard, Kabha and Karlinsky tell the story of the Palestinian citrus industry from its inception until 1950, tracing the shifting relationship between Palestinian Arabs and Zionist Jews. Using rich archival and primary sources, as well as on a variety of theoretical approaches, Kabha and Karlinsky portray the industry’s social fabric and stratification, detail its economic history, and analyze the conditions that enabled the formation of the unique binational organization that managed the country’s industry from late 1940 until April 1948.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Control Studies on the Plum Curculio in Connecticut Apple Orchards The plum curculio has been recognized as a major enemy Of fruits in New England since Colonial days. Records of its occur rence in this country, may be found in literature appearing between 1735 and 17 502, and judging from the amount written since that time it has continued its depredations undiminished in severity, ranking today as one of the most important fruit pests. It is probably a native American insect, which became destructive on the introduction of fruit culture by the colonists. The studies described in this paper were commenced in 1923, and therefore cover a period of six seasons. Though most of the Observations were made at the Station farm at Mount Carmel, the orchard of Mr. C. E. Shepard of the West Woods section of Mount Carmel was placed at our disposal for experimental work. The systematic Spraying tests recorded on pages 407-434 represent five seasons' work at the Station farm and four Seasons at Mr. Shepard's orchard. Book excerpt: 2022 National Jewish Book Award Finalist in Autobiography & Memoir; 2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards Finalist; and a 2022 WNBA Great Group Reads Selection "Like a Drop of Ink in a Downpour is more ambitious than the average memoir. It’s informed by Galina’s and her parents’ lessons on the value of art and culture and enriched by Alëna’s beautifully constructed images and Galina’s poetry." – Herb Randall, LA Review of Books Like a Drop of Ink in a Downpour traces Yelena Lembersky’s childhood in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) in the 1970s and ‘80s. Her life is upended when her family decides to emigrate to America, but instead her mother is charged with a crime and unjustly incarcerated. Told in the dual points of view, this memoir is a clear-eyed look at the reality of life in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, giving us an insider’s perspective on the roots of contemporary Russia. It is also a coming-of-age story, heartfelt and funny, a testament to the unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters, and the healing power of art.
