While Americans have rapidly changed their minds about sex education, pornography, arts funding, gay teachers, and ultimately gay marriage, opposition to legalized abortion has only grown. As other socially conservative movements have lost young activists, the pro-life movement has successfully recruited more young people to their cause. Jennifer L. Holland explores why abortion dominates conservative politics like no other cultural issue. Looking at anti-abortion movements in four western states since the 1960s--turning to the fetal pins passed around church services, the graphic images exchanged between friends, and the fetus dolls given to children in school--she argues that activists made fetal life feel personal to many Americans. Pro-life activists persuaded people to see themselves in the pins, images, and dolls they held in their hands and made the fight against abortion the primary bread-and-butter issue for social conservatives. Holland ultimately demonstrates that the success of the pro-life movement lies in the borrowed logic and emotional power of leftist activism.

Book excerpt: The Color of the Land brings the histories of Creek Indians, African Americans, and whites in Oklahoma together into one story that explores the way races and nations were made and remade in conflicts over who would own land, who would farm it, and who would rule it. This story disrupts expected narratives of the American past, revealing how identities--race, nation, and class--took new forms in struggles over the creation of different systems of property. Conflicts were unleashed by a series of sweeping changes: the forced "removal" of the Creeks from their homeland to Oklahoma in the 1830s, the transformation of the Creeks' enslaved black population into landed black Creek citizens after the Civil War, the imposition of statehood and private landownership at the turn of the twentieth century, and the entrenchment of a sharecropping economy and white supremacy in the following decades. In struggles over land, wealth, and power, Oklahomans actively defined and redefined what it meant to be Native American, African American, or white. By telling this story, David Chang contributes to the history of racial construction and nationalism as well as to southern, western, and Native American history.

But few schools offer the opportunity for an accredited program of international study on a master's degree level. OSU's history of international involvement is presented along with the creation and development of the School of International Studies. It is important to look beyond the factual data and historical information to see the real impact on the lives of people. Many stories are presented of real people who have experienced the OSU international studies programs and are making an impact on a global level. The three sections of this book are important in an understanding of the OSU School of International Studies. Legacy and Leadership are important because of the foundational standard laid by dedicated people with vision far beyond their immediate activities. Leading and Learning are also important because of the ongoing availability of committed leaders among the faculty and administration of OSU. Learning and Looking are vitally important because of the goals, measurement and direction of academically-oriented programs. The three sections come together in a basic understanding of what the OSU School of International Studies encompasses.
