Book The Mystical Element of Religion Vol 1 2

Download or read book The Mystical Element of Religion Vol 1 2 written by Friedrich von Hügel and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-10-10 with total page 1103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hügel's The Mystical Element of Religion features a critical but largely appreciative philosophy of mysticism. The author's "three elements of religion" are his most enduring contribution to theological thinking. The human soul, the movements of western civilization, and the phenomena of religion itself he characterized by these three elements: the historical/institutional element, the intellectual/speculative element, and the mystical/experiential element. This typology provided for him an understanding of the balance, tension, and 'friction' that exists in religious thinking and in the complexity of reality and existence. It was an organizing paradigm that remained central to his project. The effort to hold these sometimes disparate dimensions together was structurally and theologically dominant throughout his writing. The main subject of Hügel's study are the life and teaching of Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510), the Italian Roman Catholic saint and mystic, admired for her work among the sick and the poor and remembered because of various writings describing both these actions and her mystical experiences._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ The Three Chief Forces of Western Civilization_x000D_ The Three Elements of Religion_x000D_ Catherine Fiesca Adorna's Life, up to her Conversion; and the Chief Peculiarities predominant throughout her Convert Years_x000D_ Catherine's Life from 1473 to 1506, and its Main Changes and Growth_x000D_ Catherine's Last Four Years, 1506-1510_x000D_ Catherine's Doctrine_x000D_ Catherine's Remains and Cultus_x000D_ Battista Vernazza's Life_x000D_ Psycho-physical and Temperamental Questions_x000D_ The Main Literary Sources of Catherine's Conceptions_x000D_ Catherine's Less Ultimate This-World Doctrines_x000D_ The After-Life Problems and Doctrines_x000D_ The First Three Ultimate Questions_x000D_ The Two Final Problems: Mysticism and Pantheism, the Immanence of God, And Spiritual Personality, Human and Divine_x000D_ Back Through Asceticism, Social Religion, and the Scientific Habit of Mind, to the Mystical Element of Religion

Book The Immediacy of Mystical Experience in the European Tradition

Download or read book The Immediacy of Mystical Experience in the European Tradition written by Miklós Vassányi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines mystical experiences as portrayed in various ways by “authors” such as philosophers, mystics, psychoanalysts, writers, and peasant women. These “mystical authors” have, throughout the ages, attempted to convey the unsayable through writings, paintings, or oral stories. The immediate experience of God is the primary source and ultimate goal of these mystical expressions. This experience is essentially ineffable, yet all mystical authors, either consciously or unconsciously, feel an urge to convey what they have undergone in the moments of rapture. At the same time they are in the role of intermediaries: the goal of their self-expression – either written, painted or oral – is to make others somehow understand or feel what they have experienced, and to lead others toward the spiritual goal of human life. This volume studies the mystical experiences and the way they have been described or portrayed in West-European culture, from Antiquity to the present, from an interdisciplinary perspective, and approaches the concept of “immediate experience” in various ways.

Book Comparative Mysticism

Download or read book Comparative Mysticism written by Steven T. Katz and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of primary texts introduces readers to the mystical literature of the world's great religious traditions. Beginning with an introduction by Steven T. Katz, a leading scholar of mysticism, the anthology comprises poetry, prayer, narrative, and other writings from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, Confucianist, and Native American traditions. This collection provides readers not only with the primary mystical texts from each religious tradition, but with an explanation of the context of the source and tradition. Comparative Mysticism shows how the great mystical traditions of the world are deeply rooted in the religious traditions from which they originated. The contextual methodological approach taken throughout the anthology also addresses the critical question of what these mystical traditions, at their highest level, have in common. Despite the prevailing view that mystical traditions throughout the world are essentially similar, the presentation of the sources in this volume suggests that, in fact, the various traditions have distinct teachings and different metaphysical goals. The writings collected in Comparative Mysticism address the most fundamental and important methodological, epistemological, and hermeneutical questions regarding the study and interpretation of mysticism and mystical sources across cultures. This anthology will be an invaluable resource to students and scholars of mystic tradition for years to come.

Book Rufus Jones 1863 1948

Download or read book Rufus Jones 1863 1948 written by Claus Bernet and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Jones (1863-1948) helped organize the Quäkerspeisung (Quaker feeding effort), saving millions from starvation after the First World War. In Germany he is best known for having travelled to Berlin to seek a personal meeting with Hitler after the Kristallnacht in 1938. And, at the conclusion of a long life devoted to service, it was largely due to Jones that the American Friends Service Committee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947. But Jones was also the quintessential «American scholar», seeking to harmonize theory and practice. He was a pivotal figure of the 20th century who stayed in close touch with authors and statesmen the world over. He earned a reputation as a modern mystic and an active pacifist, and was regarded as the moral conscience of his era. His scholarship encompassed education and pedagogy, philosophical questions, church and Quaker history, as well as the political issues of the day. Jones dealt with such issues as justice, democracy, and child-rearing. His ideas are still alive today and still arouse controversy. He was particularly anxious to avoid the cultivation of an elite, pleading instead for individual growth and personality development. Over the course of his life, he was awarded twelve academic titles, taught at numerous universities, delivered countless lectures, and was one of the first theologians to recognise the significance of radio and to make full use of it. To this day Rufus Jones is still honored as a «seer», «Protestant mystic», and even as a «Master Quaker» and «Quaker Giant». It is time also to take a critical look at these honors.

This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystical Element of Religion as Studied in Saint Catherine of Genoa and Her Friends, Vol. 2: Critical Studies The picture Of Catherine's life and teaching which was attempted in the previous volume will, I hope, have been sufficiently vivid to stimulate in the reader a desire to try and go deeper, and to get as near as may be to the driving forces, the metaphysical depths Of her life. And yet it is Obvious that, if we would understand something Of these, we must pro ceed slowly and thoroughly, and must begin with comparatively Superficial questions. Or rather, we must begin by studying her temperamental and psycho-physical endowment and con dition, and then the literary in uences that stimulated and helped to mould these things, as though all this were not secondary and but the material and occasion Of the forces and self-determinations to be considered later on.
