Book Studies in Musical Graces Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Musical Graces Classic Reprint written by Ernest Fowles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Musical Graces The question therefore arises If the older ornaments have become merged in the rhythmic expression of music, what place remains for their segregation as a distinct element in modern music? There is but one answer to this question. In modern music, a few of the graces are te tained and recognized as standard ornaments because of their extreme adaptability to musical thought of every form. It is undeniable, that, the technical terms applied to some of these would have fallen into desuetude had it been the practice of the earlier modern writers to have expressed them in exact notation. The ornaments, however, would have remained and it is not too much to say, that, such as have survived through all the changing phases of musical expression, are as important in their musical significance as they are interesting in their bearing upon the technical history of music. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Musical Graces The issue of this little book is due wholly to the desire to place before the student a guide, sufficiently concise and at the same time adequately comprehensive, to the clearer understanding of musical graces. The author can present no claim to the merit of originality, either in the sectional arrangement of the ornaments or in the enunciation of the rules which regulate their performance. Such merit must inevitably accrue to the writers of the excellent works upon the subject already in existence. Nevertheless, a new feature - as far as the author is aware - may be discerned in the following pages. Each Section is accompanied by a series of questions and exercises upon the matter immediately in hand, the latter being intended for practical, as well as for the customary method of exemplification. It is almost unnecessary to reiterate the fundamental fact, that, a permanent grasp of elementary principles depends upon the means adopted in the earlier stages to test the knowledge of the student. The material hitherto presented for this purpose in connection with the particular subject of this book has been singularly wanting in breadth of aim and perspicuity of detail. Consequently, the student, if not led away by the temptation to generalize, has sought refuge in the study of details of no account in modern music or has been content to use a treatise as an ever-ready referee in just those cases when knowledge, properly acquired and assimilated, should have been his only guide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Grace and Glory They are happy in finding the current of intelligent public sentiment setting strongly in favor of devotional hymns in the Sunday School, as fostering the spirit of true worship. They trust the day is not far distant when the term sacred music will be understood to include the chil dren's offering of praise as well as the more stately service of the Sanctuary. They recognize the gratifying fact that the adult element is largely and constantly increasing in our schools, and therefore feel that a majority of hymns should be such as may be profitably used by this class, while none should be above the comprehension of children. How far they have succeeded in meeting the demand growing out of these conditions, a discriminating pub lic must judge. Book Soundtracks of Asian America

Download or read book Soundtracks of Asian America written by Grace Wang and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Soundtracks of Asian America, Grace Wang explores how Asian Americans use music to construct narratives of self, race, class, and belonging in national and transnational spaces. She highlights how they navigate racialization in different genres by considering the experiences of Asians and Asian Americans in Western classical music, U.S. popular music, and Mandopop (Mandarin-language popular music). Her study encompasses the perceptions and motivations of middle-class Chinese and Korean immigrant parents intensely involved in their children's classical music training, and of Asian and Asian American classical musicians whose prominence in their chosen profession is celebrated by some and undermined by others. Wang interviews young Asian American singer-songwriters who use YouTube to contest the limitations of a racialized U.S. media landscape, and she investigates the transnational modes of belonging forged by Asian American pop stars pursuing recording contracts and fame in East Asia. Foregrounding musical spaces where Asian Americans are particularly visible, Wang examines how race matters and operates in the practices and institutions of music making.

Book Grace Notes for a Year

Download or read book Grace Notes for a Year written by Norman Gilliland and published by NEMO Productions. This book was released on 2002 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This irresistible collection of stories is perfect for anyone interested in a fresh perspective on what it means to be a human being who creates art. Grace Notes for a Year sheds light on the fragile and perilous process of inspiration, composition, and performance required to create classical music, whether the final product is a masterpiece or a mess. Each page of the book corresponds to a different day of the year and features a true story about a famous figure in musical history. These delightful anecdotes—inspirational, informative, and often hilarious—disprove the myth of the artist as untouchable. Instead, Norman Gilliland exposes in them human vulnerability we can all relate to. From Beethoven to Wagner, these artists suffered from poverty, spent lazy days in bed, had scandalous love affairs, and often failed in their creative endeavors as often as they succeeded.

Book The Organ Works of Bach Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Organ Works of Bach Classic Reprint written by Harvey Grace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organ Works of Bach This is, I think, the first systematic and compre hensive English book on the organ works of Bach. It comes from one who is both organist and musician. I hasten to explain. By both organist and musician I do not mean what some rude scribes mean when they say of a singer, by way of the highest praise they can give him, that he is not only a singer but a musician. I would never dream of suggesting that there are organists who are not musicians. But it goes without saying that there are musicians who are not organists. I know the tribe exists, because I am a humble member of it myself. My own practical acquaint ance with the organ has been limited to the rare occasions when I have sat by an organist friend who has allowed me to let my fingers wander idly over the noisy keys, as somebody's did in the song, and with the same futility. But though I cannot play the organ, I have studied a good deal of organ music my own knowledge of Bach's organ works, indeed, is derived in the first place from study of them either at the pianoforte or with the score on my knees. There must be many others who have learned them in the same way. But what we learn of them in this way is obviously not all that is to be learned about them. They were written for a particular instrument, and cannot fully come to life except on that instrument. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
