Book Studies in Moral Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Moral Science Classic Reprint written by W. E. Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Moral Science Studies in Moral Science is published in response to the expressed desire of many of the author's students that the lectures which had formed the basis of class room discussions for so many years might be preserved in permanent form. The lectures have been rewritten and an effort has been made to prepare the work for the general reader. It would seem presumptuous to hope that this little book might "fill a long felt want" for a textbook which would give a brief discussion of the problems of Moral Science and be adapted to class room work. But should any teacher find here any helpful suggestions, the writer will be amply repaid for his pains in giving the work to the world. The attention of the reader is especially called to the treatment of Christian Evidences. To some it may seem strange that this should find a place in a work on Ethics. It is believed, however, that the recognition of Moral Dynamics as one of the divisions of Moral Science will justify the attention given to that faith, which has been the greatest Dynamic for righteousness that the world has ever known. It is hoped that this portion of the work may be helpful to those religious teachers who are called to answer questions as to the grounds of Christian belief. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the kindness of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Beall of Mount Ayr, Iowa, who read the work in manuscript and made many helpful criticisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Moral Science IN the Manual of Theology, recently pub lished, the externals of religion are discussed only so far as they relate to ceremonies and church order. To render that work a complete system of divinity, a supplement is needed on Christian Morals. But, in the ordinary course of instruc tion, moral, philosophy is introduced among the studies of college, and receives the attention of students who never enter a theological school. In agreement with this usage, it has appeared to me better, instead of adding a supplement to the Manual, to prepare a separate work on morals, and adapt it to general use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Moral Science Undoubtedly, if ethical facts are considered from the outside, objectively, and in their relation to other social facts, they seem to belong to the same category, and consequently to be objects of science as they are. But so long as they are manifested subjectively in consciousness under the form of duties, remorse, feelings of blame, praise, etc., they possess an entirely different character. They seem to relate exclusively to action, and to depend solely on principles of practice. Oi the two conceptions the first is unusual, the second universally received. It is not less familiar to philosophy than to common sense, and has never shocked any one. The other is proper to scientific sociology which puts forth as a principle that ethical facts are social facts, and which concludes that the same method applies to one as to the other. It nearly always awakes a feeling of instinctive distrust in those who are not accus tomed_to look at things in that manner. And thus it is, that our natural notions of God and his providence are wonderfully refined and improved by what is revealed in holy writ: so that the meanest of our people, who has had a christian education, knows a great deal more on these subjects, than could ever be discovered by the wisest of the ancient philosophers. That many things in the divine government, and many particulars relat ing to the divine nature, as declared in scrip ture, should surpass our comprehension, is not to be wondered at; for we are daily puzzled with things more within our sphere: we know that our own soul and body are united, but of the manner of that union we know nothing. A past eternity we cannot comprehend; and a fu ture eternity is an object by which our reason is astonished and confounded: yet nothing can be more certain, than that one eternity is past and another to come. Book The Science of Ethics as Based on the Science of Knowledge Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Science of Ethics as Based on the Science of Knowledge Classic Reprint written by Johann Gottlieb Fichte and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics as Based on the Science of Knowledge To anyone who obtains a first and superficial View of the history of philosophy it seems absurd to think of introspection as affording anything approaching the character of scientific system. There seems to be endless difference of\ Opinion. Every thinker, however, arrives at convictions of his own, although he combats the convictions of his fellows. Those who attain to any mastery of the critical system of Kant, with its higher order of introspection, reach a series of necessary truths belonging within the sphere of rational psychology. Any candid student of the History of Philosophy, who has given much time to understand the different systems, will testify that the agreements of these thinkers are numerous, and of such a character as to demonstrate the claims made for the scientific character of the higher introspection. In so far as the amateur follows the mathematical demonstrations of Newton or Leibnitz, he is forced into agreement; he sees the insight of the mathematical author he is studying. So it is in the higher introspection: sufficient care and attention will discover to the reader the philosophical necessity which the insight of a Kant or a Fichte had attained. But just as there comes a point in the study of mathe maties where the mind of the student stops before a realm of unexplored quantity, so there comes a place in philosophical introspection where the student stops. Book Moral Teachings of Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Moral Teachings of Science Classic Reprint written by Arabella B. Buckley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Teachings of Science The six chapters which form this little volume were written in 1890 for the Chautauquan. Five of them only were published, owing to want of space, and some of these were cur tailed. I have now been asked to republish the whole, and in so doing I have restored all the original passages and added some others. In the main, however, the chapters remain as at first written, and, though the necessity for brevity has caused some points to be assumed which, in a larger treatise, would have been more fully explained, it has, perhaps, the ad vantage of appealing to many readers who would not take up an elaborate philosophical work. Book The Principles of Moral Science

Download or read book The Principles of Moral Science written by Walter McDonald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Moral Science: An Essay I shall not be surprised. To find the success of the attempt questioned and denied by many, if not most, of those who have Spent the best part of their lives in the study of the great Catholic writers on morals. I admit, nay claim, that some important conclusions at which I have arrived differ from those of the ordinary hand books ou Human Acts, Laws, and Conscience, and are not to be found in any published treatise with which I am acquainted. If it were otherwise, I should not have thought of writing or publishing. Very soon after I began to teach Moral Theology, I noticed a considerable difference between the principles of the science as explained in the treatise on Human' Acts, and the less general conclusions reached later on, when dealing with particular virtues. As time advanced this difference seemed to increase rather than diminish, and I resolved to try whether I could not formulate the principles so that, while perfectly reasonable in them selves and breathing the spirit of the School, they might stand the test of being brought into comparison with all the less general, and therefore more easily ascertained, conclusions of moral science. Unless forced by what I deem compelling reasons I have not ventured to advocate a new form of statement: the reader must decide for himself whether the reasons that appeal to me so strongly are as conclusive as I deem them. Those who have begun the study of moral theology or ethics by reading the treatise on Human Acts, may be disposed to think that the treatise in question, with which all our hand-books commence, was developed and put into its present shape before the special treatises that come later on and deal with particular virtues, such as charity, religion, chastity, or justice and that these special treatises are practical applications of more general prin ciples previously formulated. The reverse is true. The trea tise on Human Acts is a synthesis of conclusions previously deduced when dealing with special virtues. Hence the natural order is to test the more general principles by applying them to the solution of special cases, somewhat as the student of nature tests a law by seeing whether it harmonizes with observed facts or even with previously ascertained less general conclusions. It may be, of course, that these less general conclusions are not true, or that the facts have not been correctly observed, or that the observation has not been sufficiently exhaustive. If, however, you are satisfied that the special conclusions are true, while you cannot make them square with the more general principle or law, nothing remains but to give this principle or law a new shape, so that it may be brought into harmony with the other ascertained results of science. Its leading object is to show, in a general way, that the entire conduct of man - physical, mental, and moral - is based upon a scientific foundation; to make clear the truth that the great powers and laws of science are the chief guides of life; to show that universal energy acting according to law is the true divine power governing physical, moral, social, and religious conduct; and to illustrate the influence of science upon the material, mental, and moral progress of mankind.
