Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montaigne and Shakspere For a good many years past the anatomic study of Shakspere, of which a revival seems now on foot, has been somewhat out of fashion, as compared with its vogue in the palmy days of the New Shakspere Society in England, and the years of the battle between the iconoclasts and the worshipers in Germany. When Mr. Fleay and Mr. Spedding were hard at work on the metrical tests; when Mr. Spedding was subtly undoing the chronological psychology of Dr. Furnivall; when the latter student was on his part undoing in quite another style some of the judgments of Mr. Swinburne; and when Mr. Halliwell-Phillipps was with natural wrath calling on Mr. Browning, as President of the Society; to keep Dr. Furnivall in order, we (then) younger onlookers felt that literary history was verily being made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Writings of Montaigne: And Other Papers The writings of Montaigne prior to his Essa 's have been but little studied, yet they are of inter est in themselves, and of still greater interest from containing, to some extent, indications of the origin of thoughts that are developed in the Essays, and from affording information as to various influences that affected their author's mind through life. It is this that makes it worth while, as it rarely is, to concern ourselves with the imperfect when we possess the better thing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Michel De Montaigne All dates of writings given are those of first publication, unless otherwise stated. The date, 1580 - 1588 - 1595, refers to three successive edi tions of the Essays. The titles of books and other writings have been translated into English, ex cept in cases where translation would be mislead ing; but the original French titles follow the translated titles in parentheses, the first time each occurs. I have endeavoured as far as possible to go to the sources, but my chief source has been the Essays themselves. I have interwoven them with my narrative in many places. The Bibliography, derived. Almost exclusively from books on my own shelves, may assure the reader that I have not written without much preparatory study. What ever its merits or defects may be, I believe it would' not be presumptuous to say of this volume Montaigne's word: C'est icy un Livre de bonne foy, Lecteur. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montaigne: A Study Montaigne is one of those perennial sources of mental health to which there needs no excuse for returning. He is always necessary and always being rediscovered. Perhaps his grand sincerity, fullness, and truth of matter, his absolute freedom from affectation of manner, are of special cathartic value for an age in which these qualities are not conspicuous. Perhaps Montaigne with his hatred for the lie, his detestation of show and sham, his fearless frankness, might help us to a quicker instinct for honesty, a readier detection of the vulpine and the vain. Even if we must echo with a sigh his own doubt whether true opinions are always the most convenient for man, yet never was it well with him who consciously withheld his worship from that altar - few are they who will not profit by sharing Montaigne's noble passion for the truth. What irony of fate reserved his own frame and bodily remains for a new demonstration of that which many readers will always consider to be the chief topic of his delightful chatting! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Montaigne: Some Thoughts and Expressions Similar to Those in His Essays The examination of the influence of Montaigne that may be traced in French and English literature which I entered upon in a preceding volume 1 is here continued. But the following illustrations of it are much vaguer in character than the previous ones. Indeed the reader may often feel that it is not precisely the individual spirit of Montaigne finding fresh expression that is perceived; for with his spirit is blended that of later ages, which while re-thinking Montaigne's thoughts have developed them more fully than it was possible for him to do. Book From Montaigne to Moliere Or the Preparation for the Classical Age of French Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book From Montaigne to Moliere Or the Preparation for the Classical Age of French Literature Classic Reprint written by Arthur Tilley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Montaigne to Moliere or the Preparation for the Classical Age, of French Literature The change which came over English poetry between the death of Shakespeare and the appearance of Pope has been traced by Mr Gosse in his well-known volume From Shakespeare to Pope. The similar change from a literature of imagination to a literature of reason which took place in France between the death of Montaigne and the production of Moliere's Les Precieuses Ridicules, or, in other words, the transition from the Renaissance to the Classical Age, is the subject of the following pages. I have not attempted to write a complete history of French literature during this period, but rather to give an account of the various forces, political, religious, social, and literary, which helped to bring about this change. Even in those chapters which deal exclusively with the literary forces, such as those on Malherbe and Corneille, there will be found nothing like a complete critical estimate of the writers. The chapter on the Catholic revival is a sketch, necessarily brief and imperfect, of a large and important subject, which still awaits its historian. The chapter entitled "The Reign of Bad Taste" deals with matters which are still the subject of considerable controversy - namely, the origin of preciosite and the influence of Italy and Spain. Book Montaigne and Education of the Judgment Classic Reprint

Download or read book Montaigne and Education of the Judgment Classic Reprint written by Gabriel Compayre and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montaigne and Education of the Judgment Everything has been said regarding Montaigne, and to wish to speak of him again requires some boldness. Yet it is impossible to deny him, in our gallery of "Pioneers in Education," the place to which he has a right. No doubt he gave us only a sketch. He did not go deeply into the problem of education; but he was full of its importance, and reverts to it continually in many a chapter of the Essays. He is in no way a dogmatic theorist. In all things he is a dilettante. He idled along through the world of ideas, with the marvellous resources of his erudition, with the impulsive raciness of a keen and original mind. He "tickled" himself, as he says, with his imaginings. But in the matter of education he shows unaccustomed gravity, and this is certainly the subject on which he varied least. On how many pedagogical questions has he not left some deep or epigrammatic utterance, and of quite modern tendency? Download or read book Montaigne written by Philippe Desan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive biography of the great French essayist and thinker One of the most important writers and thinkers of the Renaissance, Michel de Montaigne (1533–92) helped invent a literary genre that seemed more modern than anything that had come before. But did he do it, as he suggests in his Essays, by retreating to his chateau and stoically detaching himself from his violent times? Philippe Desan overturns this long standing myth by showing that Montaigne was constantly connected to and concerned with realizing his political ambitions—and that the literary and philosophical character of the Essays largely depends on them. Desan shows how Montaigne conceived of each edition of the Essays as an indispensable prerequisite to the next stage of his public career. It was only after his political failure that Montaigne took refuge in literature, and even then it was his political experience that enabled him to find the right tone for his genre. The most comprehensive and authoritative biography of Montaigne yet written, this sweeping narrative offers a fascinating new picture of his life and work.

Book The Complete Essays

Download or read book The Complete Essays written by Michel Montaigne and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-03-25 with total page 1360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel de Montaigne was one of the most influential figures of the Renaissance, singlehandedly responsible for popularising the essay as a literary form. This Penguin Classics edition of The Complete Essays is translated from the French and edited with an introduction and notes by M.A. Screech. In 1572 Montaigne retired to his estates in order to devote himself to leisure, reading and reflection. There he wrote his constantly expanding 'assays', inspired by the ideas he found in books contained in his library and from his own experience. He discusses subjects as diverse as war-horses and cannibals, poetry and politics, sex and religion, love and friendship, ecstasy and experience. But, above all, Montaigne studied himself as a way of drawing out his own inner nature and that of men and women in general. The Essays are among the most idiosyncratic and personal works in all literature and provide an engaging insight into a wise Renaissance mind, continuing to give pleasure and enlightenment to modern readers. With its extensive introduction and notes, M.A. Screech's edition of Montaigne is widely regarded as the most distinguished of recent times. Michel de Montaigne (1533-1586) studied law and spent a number of years working as a counsellor before devoting his life to reading, writing and reflection. If you enjoyed The Complete Essays, you might like Francois Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel, also available in Penguin Classics.
