Book excerpt: From the Preface. The student of the problems of mental deviation is fortunate indeed to be able to avail himself of the splendid opportunities for research provided at the Training School at Vineland, New Jersey. For almost a quarter of a century this institution has developed under the inspiration and according to the vision of its most able superintendent, E. R. Johnstone. His constant aim has been to further the interests of the individual child and is expressed by the motto of the school - "Happiness first, all else follows." The chief means for attaining this end has been the development of the child's ability in whatever directions and to whatever degree is possible. No greater tribute could be paid to Johnstone's great work than the loyalty of adherence of the Vineland people to the principles he has laid down. The child's training is carried on by many hands, through many ways. I have not hesitated to make the whole institution my research field and to draw on the great stores of experience that have accumulated during the twenty years' service of some of its officers. It is not my belief that the best observations of the psychology of defectives are to be made through the laboratory windows, nor that the only information of value regarding defectives is possessed by psychologists. Rather am I convinced that some of the best research lessons may be learned through the analysis of the experience of those who have known and studied the defective through the many long years of his training and development. There is hardly an employee of the Training School who has not added his or her quota to this study.

Nash, without whose expert aid much of the data could not have been gathered or inter preted. The members of the Board of Trustees, by their personal interest and encouragement, have also assisted. Book Reducing Risks for Mental Disorders

Download or read book Reducing Risks for Mental Disorders written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding of how to reduce risk factors for mental disorders has expanded remarkably as a result of recent scientific advances. This study, mandated by Congress, reviews those advances in the context of current research and provides a targeted definition of prevention and a conceptual framework that emphasizes risk reduction. Highlighting opportunities for and barriers to interventions, the book draws on successful models for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, injuries, and smoking. In addition, it reviews the risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse and dependence, depressive disorders, and conduct disorders and evaluates current illustrative prevention programs. The models and examination provide a framework for the design, application, and evaluation of interventions intended to prevent mental disorders and the transfer of knowledge about prevention from research to clinical practice. The book presents a focused research agenda, with recommendations on how to develop effective intervention programs, create a cadre of prevention researchers, and improve coordination among federal agencies.

Book The Stigma of Mental Illness End of the Story

Download or read book The Stigma of Mental Illness End of the Story written by Wolfgang Gaebel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a highly innovative contribution to overcoming the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness – still the heaviest burden both for those afflicted and those caring for them. The scene is set by the presentation of different fundamental perspectives on the problem of stigma and discrimination by researchers, consumers, families, and human rights experts. Current knowledge and practice used in reducing stigma are then described, with information on the programmes adopted across the world and their utility, feasibility, and effectiveness. The core of the volume comprises descriptions of new approaches and innovative programmes specifically designed to overcome stigma and discrimination. In the closing part of the book, the editors – all respected experts in the field – summarize some of the most important evidence- and experience-based recommendations for future action to successfully rewrite the long and burdensome ‘story’ of mental illness stigma and discrimination.

Book Treatment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Download or read book Treatment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders written by Randi Jenssen Hagerman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting-edge book brings advances in genetics, neurobiology, and psychopharmacology to the clinic to enhance treatment for neurodevelopmental disorders. Significant progress has been made in identifying the neurobiological mechanisms of several disorders and targeted treatments are modifying the outcome of these disorders. However, the ability to utilize this knowledge has not been summarized in one place for the practicing clinician. This book will fill that gap by providing the theoretical underpinnings and the latest advances in targeted treatments. Several neurodevelopmental disorders are reviewed in detail including clinical features and behavioral phenotypes, standard treatments and new targeted treatments based on the latest advances in neurobiology and the animal model studies that have lead to new treatments. The disorders covered include psychiatric disorders: schizophrenia, depression, autism and ADHD; single gene disorders including Tuberous Sclerosis, Fragile X Syndrome and fragile X- associated disorders, Angelman Syndrome, PKU, and Muscular Dystrophies; and complex genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. This book also highlights the commonalities across disorders and new genetic and molecular concepts in an easy to read format. This is a very exciting time for new targeted treatments and this volume is a landmark treatise on this new age of treatment.

Book Historical Roots of Psychopathology

Download or read book Historical Roots of Psychopathology written by Diogo Telles Correia and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New advances of the neuroscience supported by a refined, reliable and valid phenotyping (e.g., at the level of symptoms and not at the level of disorders), are bringing some promising results. The mapping of clinical phenomenology on specific brain dysfunction is now becoming plausible and the resulting functional psychopathology may in the future significantly replace the present nosology (Jablensky, 2010). Nevertheless, as Andreasen (2007) points out: “Applying technology without companionship of wise clinicians with specific expertise in psychopathology will be a lonely, sterile and perhaps fruitless enterprise.” Some of the chapters of this Ebook deal with aspects which are essential to the historical understanding of mental symptoms and disorders.
