This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Life From Jewish Proverbs A writer of many books once said to me that he regretted every preface he had written. Seeing that I have the highest respect for his talents, I am constrained to take to heart the moral, which (particularly in a book on proverbs) would seem to be "least said, soonest mended." But whatever else he may choose to leave unsaid, an author is expected to give away his secret in the preface, making known his intentions as discreetly as he can but still explicitly. That duty accomplished, he is at liberty to give thanks, and so conclude. The greater part of this volume (Chapters V. to XII.) is occupied with a study of the teaching of "Wisdom" among the Jews in Palestine during the Hellenistic Age, so far as the subject is represented in the two great collections of Jewish sayings, the Book of Proverbs and Ecclesiasticus. It would be too much to claim that in these chapters the book breaks new ground, for the importance of the Hellenistic period is recognised by students of history, and there have been many commentaries on the Book of Proverbs, nor has Ecclesiasticus been without its expositors. But the historian devotes himself to the relation of events, and the commentator is busy with the thoughts of the several proverbs or with the textual difficulties they present, rather than with their precise historical setting. Book Ancient Jewish Proverbs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ancient Jewish Proverbs Classic Reprint written by A. Cohen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Jewish Proverbs The genuine proverb is not the elaborately thought-out sentence of an individual, but the commonly adopted expression of long and wide experience. Its literary form is usually crude, unpolished, and devoid of style, indicating that it Obtained its currency among the lower classes, not the littérateurs. Hence the saying that pro verbs are the People's Voice is true in more senses than one. It is the popular speech in so far as it reflects the popular mind, but also be cause it is an accurate record of the vernacular. This is a point of great importance. In attempt ing to form a conception of the language used by a community at a given time, it is not always safe to rely only upon the literature of that period. The literary language often differs considerably from the spoken, and therefore proverbs offer us the best material for forming an idea of how the people spoke in their everyday intercourse. Book Ancient Jewish Proverbs

Download or read book Ancient Jewish Proverbs written by A. Cohen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Jewish Proverbs The best modern collection of Jewish proverbs is Rabbinische Blumenlese (Leipzig, 1844), and Zur rabbinischen Spruchkunde (Wien, 1851), by Leopold Dukes. The original sayings are given in alphabetical order with translation and explanatory notes. Many Hebrew maxims of individual Rabbis are also included in his list. My indebtedness to Dukes' work is very great, although I frequently differ from him in translation and interpretation. I have also been able to fill up several lacunae in his book. Every Rabbinic reference has been examined and rectified where incorrect. Not to have classified the proverbs under their subjects is a great drawback to the usefulness of Dukes' work. Dr. M. Lewin in his Aramäische Sprichworter und Volkssprüche (Frankfurt, 1895) has attempted a classification. His collection is, however, very defective, seeing that the Midrashic sources have been all but ignored. He has, moreover, frequently copied the references from Dukes without verifying them. But the book is not without its use. His textual variants are of value. I have ventured a fresh classification based upon Dr. Lewin's, but with numerous deviations and, it is hoped, improvements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of Understanding: And Other Studies in the Book of Proverbs The sermons composing this volume were preached on successive Sunday mornings to a city congregation in the industrial North of England. They are now printed practically as they were delivered, with few except verbal alterations, no attemm having been made to change their original form; it was felt in every way better to retain the direct mode of address, and even to leave an occasional colloquial phrase unreplaced by its more literary equivalent. References to such events of the day as the loss of the Titanic, the war in the Balkans, etc., have likewise been allowed to stand and these, while disclosing the date of the book as surely as the year given on the title-page, will not, it is hoped, be found disturbing by readers. The author's aim has been to te-emphasise and illustrate some of the truths for daily living gathered in the Book of Proverbs, in their application to the life of to-day, and in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; if he be found to have succeeded in his re-setting of these ancient gems of wisdom, which have lost none of their lustre in the ight of the centuries, he will feel justified in offering this sheaf of practical addresses to a wider audience. Book The People and the Books 18 Classics of Jewish Literature

Download or read book The People and the Books 18 Classics of Jewish Literature written by Adam Kirsch and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the classics of Jewish literature, from the Bible to modern times, by "one of America’s finest literary critics" (Wall Street Journal). Jews have long embraced their identity as “the people of the book.” But outside of the Bible, much of the Jewish literary tradition remains little known to nonspecialist readers. The People and the Books shows how central questions and themes of our history and culture are reflected in the Jewish literary canon: the nature of God, the right way to understand the Bible, the relationship of the Jews to their Promised Land, and the challenges of living as a minority in Diaspora. Adam Kirsch explores eighteen classic texts, including the biblical books of Deuteronomy and Esther, the philosophy of Maimonides, the autobiography of the medieval businesswoman Glückel of Hameln, and the Zionist manifestoes of Theodor Herzl. From the Jews of Roman Egypt to the mystical devotees of Hasidism in Eastern Europe, The People and the Books brings the treasures of Jewish literature to life and offers new ways to think about their enduring power and influence.
