Book Studies in Indian Urban Development

Download or read book Studies in Indian Urban Development written by Edwin S. Mills and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book report research sponsored by the World Bank on urban development in India. Their purpose is to provide a broad framework of historical, international, and regional findings within which a wide range of issues related to Indian urbanization can be studied. The core of the report is organized in eight chapters. Chapter one provides an introduction to the Indian economy. It traces the progress of India's economic growth during the twentieth century and presents a brief description of the government's institutional framework for economic planning. Chapter two examines the relation between urbanization and economic development on a worldwide basis. Chapter three, shifts from worldwide comparisons to comparisons within India at various times in its history. Chapter four presents a study of Indian city sizes and city growth. In chapter five, the focus narrows to the state of Madhya Pradesh, where the effects on migration and population growth of government-provided services and of sectoral sizes can be measured. In chapter six, the report shows the effects of city size on total factor productivity in manufacturing. This study confirms for India the findings of related studies in other countries that total factor productivity increases with city size. In two places, the discussions naturally extend to a consideration of the effects of certain actions of the Indian government: chapter seven examines government attempts to influence the size and the growth rates of India's largest cities, and finally, chapter eight takes a look at government attempts to alter the personal income distribution.

Download or read book Mapping India s Urbanization written by J.P. Singh and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s urbanization differs markedly from that of the more developed regions. While urban growth in the more developed regions is slowing down, India’surbanization is moving with a speedy pace. India has been facing a serious problemof the rapid rise of population since the last seven decades. The huge size of urbanpopulation population has reached nearly 400 million now, while until the nineteenthcentury no developed country had a population of more than 100 million. Only a few metropolises dominate the remainder of the country so excessivelythat they prevent other parts from developing, causing increasing regionalimbalance. The rapidly increasing population requires a commensurate increasein the number of jobs in urban areas, if this population is not to starve or bereduced to total dependence. The expansion in the industrial sector of the economyhas lagged far behind the population growth. This has resulted in increasingunemployment, slums, deterioration in urban living, crime, political tension, povertyand similar other problems. It appears that India is likely to confront still greaterurban problems in future. With the hasty rise of population the quality of life inbig cities has deteriorated quite significant.

Book Global Review of Human Settlements

Download or read book Global Review of Human Settlements written by Gyoujin Cho and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Review of Human Settlements: A Support Paper for Habitat: United Nations Conference on Human Settlement reviews global human settlement conditions and the factors affecting their present and future developments. The report presents information, analyses, and conclusions. It analyzes the causes and effects of the urbanization process; describes the quality of life in human settlements; and presents relevant definitions, list of tables, and country composition by regions. The urbanization process pertains to demographical and economical aspects. Demographical aspects include city size, city growth, migration, and natural increase. Natural population increase accounts for about one-half of urban population while migration from rural to urban places account for the other half. One aspect of the quality of life in human settlements is the prevailing housing conditions. According to the report, housing conditions in most developing countries have become worse in the past ten years due to rapid population growth, to rates of migration from rural to urban places, and to the decline of the rate of increase in national output. The report also contains a list of criteria used nationally to distinguish urban areas from rural areas. For example, South Korea defines urban areas as Seoul or municipalities with 5,000 or more inhabitants. The report is suitable for demographers, economists, environmentalists, ecologists, and policy makers involved in rural development and social services.
