Book Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes

Download or read book Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes written by James S. Albert and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fish faunas of continental South and Central America constitute one of the greatest concentrations of aquatic diversity on Earth, consisting of about 10 percent of all living vertebrate species. Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes explores the evolutionary origins of this unique ecosystem. The chapters address central themes in the study of tropical biodiversity: why is the Amazon basin home to so many distinct evolutionary lineages? What roles do ecological specialization, speciation, and extinction play in the formation of regional assemblages? How do dispersal barriers contribute to isolation and diversification? Focusing on whole faunas rather than individual taxonomic groups, this volume shows that the area’s high regional diversity is not the result of recent diversification in lowland tropical rainforests. Rather, it is the product of species accumulating over tens of millions of years and across a continental arena.

Book Women in ichthyology an anthology in honour of ET Ro and Genie

Download or read book Women in ichthyology an anthology in honour of ET Ro and Genie written by E.K. Balon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special volume is dedicated to the contributions of women ichthyologists. Three colleagues were selected to represent all women ichthyologists, Ethelwynn Trewavas (ET), Rosemary Lowe-McConnell (Ro) and Eugenie Clark (Genie). All have had distinguished professional careers and have contributed in their own ways to their science. The career of each is highlighted by a personal interview with one of the editors of the volume, a bibliography of their lifetime publications, and a biography of their careers. Questions of historical inequities and current controversies in the treatment of women ichthyologists by their peers are raised and addressed by the women themselves. The personal and professional influences of these three women, and other women ichthyologists, are highlighted. A survey article by Pat Brown brings a number of women ichthyologists to the attention of a broader audience, and points the way for a more comprehensive historical consideration of the accomplishments and contributions of women ichthyologists. The volume continues with 16 solicited and contributed papers. ET's studies of taxonomy and life history are echoed in papers on the taxonomy and systematics of marine angelfishes, and of freshwater bitterlings, a review of reproduction in the North Atlantic ichthyofauna, and a comparison of reproductive styles and systematics of African minnows. Ro's studies on ecology, life history and behaviour are paralleled by papers on growth and metabolism in piranha, the community structure in tide pool fishes, and the social system and reproductive patterns in groupers. Genie's pioneering work on sexual roles and sex change, and her field studies of the behaviour of marine fishes are reflected in papers on gonadal structure and environmental sex determination in brook lamprey, sexual patterns in hawkfish, reproduction and systematics in phallostethids, gonadal structure and systematics in gobiids, reproductive and predator avoidance behaviour in razorfish, early ontogeny of an African mouth brooder, and alternative life histories in killifish.

Download or read book The Ecology of Marine Fishes written by Dr. Larry G. Allen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-02-15 with total page 1353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine fishes have been intensively studied, and some of the fundamental ideas in the science of marine ecology have emerged from the body of knowledge derived from this diverse group of organisms. This unique, authoritative, and accessible reference, compiled by 35 luminary ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and ichthyologists, provides a synthesis and interpretation of the large, often daunting, body of information on the ecology of marine fishes. The focus is on the fauna of the eastern Pacific, especially the fishes of the California coast, a group among the most diverse and best studied of all marine ecosystems. A generously illustrated and comprehensive source of information, this volume will also be an important launching pad for future research and will shed new light on the study of marine fish ecology worldwide. The contributors touch on many fields in biology, including physiology, development, genetics, behavior, ecology, and evolution. The book includes sections on the history of research, both published and unpublished data, sections on collecting techniques, and references to important earlier studies.

Book Ecology and Conservation of Fishes

Download or read book Ecology and Conservation of Fishes written by Harold M. Tyus and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a stand-alone textbook for students and a useful reference for professionals in government and private agencies, academic institutions, and consultants, Ecology and Conservation of Fishes provides broad, comprehensive, and systematic coverage of all aquatic systems from the mountains to the oceans. The book begins with overview discussions on the ecology, evolution, and diversity of fishes. It moves on to address freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems and identifies factors that affect the distribution and abundance of fishes. It then examines the adaptations of fishes as a response to constraints posed in ecosystems. The book concludes with four chapters on applied ecology to discuss the critical issues of management, conservation, biodiversity crises, and climate change. Major marine fisheries have collapsed, and there are worldwide declines in freshwater fish populations. Fishery scientists and managers must become more effective at understanding and dealing with resource issues. If not, fish species, communities, and entire ecosystems will continue to decline as habitats change and species are lost. Ecology and Conservation of Fishes has taken a historical and functional approach to explain how we got where we are, providing old and new with a better foundation as ecologists and conservationists, and most importantly, it awakens senses of purpose and need. Past management practices are reviewed, present programs considered, and the need for incorporating principles of applied ecology in future practices is emphasized.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Ichthyology: A Monographic Review of the Family of Atherinidae or Silversides The present paper contains a review of the genera, with an annotated list of the known species, of the fishes of the family Atherinidaj, known as "Silversides" in the eastern United States; as "Hardyheads" in Australia; as "Joel," "Sauclet," etc., in France; "Epscto" and "Lattarina" in Italy, and throughout Latin America as "Fishes of the King" (Pesce-re, Peixe-rei, Pexerey, Pescado del Rey, Peje-rei, Peje-rcy, Pejerrey). The majority of the species are tropical, though many are found within the temperate zones. Some arc marine living along sandy shores, some in the sluggish estuaries of rivers, a few in mountain torrents, or lakes; seldom in muddy water. None are known from the depths of the ocean: they arc closely confined everywhere, both to the surface and to the shoreline. The species are usually small, the tropical ones almost uniformly so, attaining a length of from two to six inches; in the temperate regions of the New World some reach a length of between one and two feet. For more than seventy-five years after the tenth edition of the Systema Nature was published, Atherina remained the only named genus of its group. The first generic divisions were made by Bonaparte in 1837; by Swainson, in 1839; by Bleckcr, in 1853; and by Girard, in 1854. In his Catalogue, however, Gunther (1861) recognized but two genera, Atherina and an unnatural assemblage for which he chose the name Atherinichthys. Since that time, however, numerous genera have been described. In the present review, we accept 38 genera and two subgenera as valid. Similarly most of the species remained long unknown. Linnaeus knew but one, Atherina hepsetus. Valenciennes in 1835 listed 28 species; Gunther in 1861 described but 38. Considering only the North and Middle American species, Jordan and Evermann in 1896 accepted 34. We now list 149 species and subspecies.
