Book German Literature in a New Century

Download or read book German Literature in a New Century written by Katharina Gerstenberger and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the first decade after the fall of the Berlin wall was marked by the challenges of unification and the often difficult process of reconciling East and West German experiences, many Germans expected that the “new century” would achieve “normalization.” The essays in this volume take a closer look at Germany’s new normalcy and argue for a more nuanced picture that considers the ruptures as well as the continuities. Germany’s new generation of writers is more diverse than ever before, and their texts often not only speak of a Germany that is multicultural but also take a more playful attitude toward notions of identity. Written with an eye toward similar and dissimilar developments and traditions on both sides of the Atlantic, this volume balances overviews of significant trends in present-day cultural life with illustrative analyses of individual writers and texts.

Book Studies in Modern German Literature Sudermann Hauptmann

Download or read book Studies in Modern German Literature Sudermann Hauptmann written by Otto Heller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Modern German Literature Sudermann Hauptmann: Women Writers of the Nineteenth Century Just why Hauptmann and Sudermann were chosen to represent the modern tendencies in the drama and in fiction is stated fully in the early part of the first sketch. The paper on Women Writers of the Nineteenth Century, although broader in scope and consequently less intensive in treatment, was joined to those on Sudermann and Hauptmann for the simple reason that it seemed practi cal to select out of the fullness of the available material just those topics which for people outside of Germany possess the keenest actuality. Should this beginning prove not altogether abortive, it is the author's intention to follow up the present volume with further groups of studies, and he even hopes by this means to round out, less unmethodically than would appear at first blush, the story of the growth, ascendency, and, if signs may be believed, the decline, of naturalism in German litera ture under the new Empire. Book Re Interpretations

Download or read book Re Interpretations written by J. P. Stern and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-09-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reissue of Professor Stern's distinguished study of German prose from the death of Goethe to the heyday of the Wilhelminian Empire. Professor Stern argues that nineteenth-century German prose is characterized by a particular combination of the prophetic and the archaic, of the existential and the parochial, and is only partially and sometimes not at all related to the social and political realities of the age. In this sense, German literature of the period stands apart from the main stream of European realism and has, for that reason, received little attention from the common reader outside its own country. The book contains studies of Goethe, Grillparzer, Büchner, Schopenhauer, Heine, Stifter and Fontane, all of whom re-interpreted the world from points of view other than that of the common and commonly explored social certainties of their age. Consequently, Professor Stern suggests alternative criteria to the common notion of realism with which to asses their work.

Book Relations Stop Nowhere

Download or read book Relations Stop Nowhere written by Hugh Ridley and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts for the first time a comparative literary history of Germany and the USA in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its material does not come from the familiar overlaps of individual German and American writers, but from the work of the literary historians of the two countries after 1815, when American intellectuals took Germany as a model for their project to create an American national literature. The first part of the book examines fundamental structural affinities between the two literary histories and the common problems these caused, especially in questions of canon, realism, aesthetics and in the marginalization of popular and women's writing. In the second part, significant figures whose work straddle the two literatures - from Sealsfield and Melville, Whitman and Thomas Mann to Nietzsche, Emerson and Bellow - are discussed in detail, and the arguments of the first part are shown in their relevance to understanding major writers. This book is not merely comparative in scope: it shows that only international comparison can explain the course of American literary history in the nineteenth and twentieth century. As recent developments in American Studies explore the multi-cultural and 'hybrid' nature of the American tradition, this book offers evidence of the dependencies which linked American and German national literary history.
