Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in General Physiology, Vol. 15 It seemed desirable that the reader should be spared an undue amount of repetition, and for this reason a number of publications are omitted from this collection, and those printed are in many cases shortened. Among the papers which have been omitted are the preliminary notices and all those papers of which I am not the sole author. Occasion ally I have made additions in the form of footnotes. Such footnotes have always been marked by the addition of [1903] at the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Maddock Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of General Physiology IN the preparation of courses of lectures dealing with various physiological processes I have found considerable difficulty, and spent much time, in the extraction from books and original papers, many of them not biological, of material of fundamental importance in the proper treatment of the subject. The mechanism of reactions in heterogeneous systems may be mentioned. It seemed to me, therefore, that the results of this labour might be of use to others, whose work does not allow them sufficient time to read articles which do not appear to bear upon their particular domain of science. In arranging these facts, however, it became manifest that a somewhat wider treatment would be of more value, so that the book might be of service to all desiring a general, elementary, treatment of what may be called abstract physiology, as distinct from the applied physiology required by the agricultural, medical, or veterinary student for the purpose of his profession. In extenuation of my conduct in producing a work on physiology for the use, as I venture to hope, of all those who have any interest in science, I should like to quote a few words by Huxley to be found in his address, On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences (huxley, 1902-1903, p. 59 - see Bibliography). He gives an answer to the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Gray M'Kendrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2: General Physiology Although this work has been modelled to some extent on my "Outlines of Physiology," now out of print, it is essentially a new book, and as it aims at giving a more detailed account of the subject, the title of "Outlines of Physiology" has been abandoned for that of a "d104 Book of Physiology." I have not endeavoured to give anything like an encyclopaedic account of the modern researches that have built up the physiological science of the present time, but rather to weave into a consecutive narrative the main facts and principles of physiology, as these present themselves to my mind, after nearly eighteen years of experience as a teacher of the science. Probably no science is advancing with greater rapidity, if one may form an opinion from the large number of original papers that are announced, month by month, and from the large number of investigators in the physiological laboratories of the Continent, of America, and of our own country. Thus it is year by year becoming more difficult for a teacher to keep abreast of the wave of progress, and still more difficult to assimilate the new facts and to incorporate them with his previous knowledge. Each teacher will also view the subject more especially according to his prodilections for the morphological, the chemical, or the physical side of the science, and it is not easy in the preparation of such a work as this to be impartial and to present the science in all its completeness to the reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to General Physiology: With Practical Exercises It seemed scarcely possible to add summaries to the chapters, as in my larger book, for the reason that all the matter contained in so small a space is of nearly equal importance, and a summary would have been almost as long as the chapter itself. It would also tend to encourage what I wish most to avoid, namely, any kind of merely learning by heart. The student may find it profitable to make abstracts for himself. Book Laboratory Directions in General Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Directions in General Physiology Classic Reprint written by E. N. Harvey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in General Physiology Each student. Will need a notebook kept for this purpose alone. The notebooks will be taken up and examined at intervals. Students are to work in pairs but each 'student is to observe the results of every experiment himself. In some cases it will be necessary for the students to observe experiments performed by the instructor. In this case each: student is to keep notes exactly as when he performs the experiments himself. The notes should include an account of the apparatus, prepara tions made, etc., a statement of what is done in carrying out the experiments or Observations, a statement of the results, and finally of what the experiments Show. While the notes should not be too voluminous, there is much greater likelihood of erring on the side of making them too brief than too long. Complete sentences should always be used and a connected account given, that will be perfectly intelligible to a reader. Sketches, or better, diagrams, of apparatus, figures of structures, etc., should be given wherever possible; they are more important and take the place of long descriptions. Any pertinent matter in the way of explanations, etc., which the student desires to have on record may be written in the book, but should be distinguished from the results of his own observa tions, experiments, and reasoning by being enclosed in parentheses. The instructor will then understand that such matter is not put forward as original results. Enter into each experiment in the spirit of research. Always read the directions carefully and obtain an idea of the general mode of procedure and purpose of the experiment. Do not call upon the instructor at every hitch but endeavor to overcome the difficulty yourself. If you suspect the result of your experiment incorrect consult the instructor before repeating it. Remember that the value obtained from a laboratory course will depend on your own zeal and ingenuity. In Physiology, as in any experimental science, the best results are only obtained if the apparatus is in good working condition and clean. Students should never allow liquids, Spilled on the table, or apparatus to remain there, and before leaving the laboratory, the glassware used must be cleaned and instruments and reagents returned to their proper places. Be careful not to mix the stoppers of reagent bottles. Report any breakage to the instructor at once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Studies in Physiology Anatomy and Hygiene Classic Reprint written by James Edward Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Physiology, Anatomy and Hygiene The Study of an Engine - If we wished to make a careful and scientific study of a railroad locomotive, it would, per haps, be best for us first to go to a machine Shop where engines are built and repaired. There we could see the construction of each separate part and could also find how these various parts are put together to form a completed engine. But if we had never before seen an engine, the whole machine would probably have little meaning or interest for us until we had watched it in action. We should then learn how the locomotive is supplied with water and coal. We Should see that the burning coal converts the water into steam, and that energy or power is thus furnished by which the pistons cause the drive wheels to revolve. All the pipes, cranks, levers, and rods we should find to be specially adapted for starting the locomotive, for keeping it in motion, or for stopping it. Book Human Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Furneaux and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology This work is intended for those who desire an easy introduction to die study of the Human Frame. The matter embraces those parts of the subject which arc contained in the Elementary Syllabus of the Science and Art Department, but is not confined strictly within those limits. A short chapter on the Ear has been added (thus completing the outline of the organs of special sense), and also another on the Larynx and the Voice. And again, although the students working according to this Syllabus are not required to obtain any 'information upon points of structure needing the use of the compound microscope' with the exception of the characters of the corpuscles of the blood, yet in many other instances such information has been given. It is eminently desirable that the student should avail himself of every opportunity of making his study thoroughly practical. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. Book A Textbook of Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Textbook of Physiology Classic Reprint written by Martin Flack and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Physiology The preparation of this textbook was begun before the war at a time when we were both actively engaged in teaching at the London Hospital Medical College, and when it was considered that we might with advantage put together and harmonize the physiology we were teaching. In order to secure uniformity of style, each section has been written in the first instance by the same hand, and then finished in its present form by careful collaboration between the two of us. While physiological research has been confined in many directions, progress along certain lines has been especially remarkable since the outbreak of war. We have endeavoured to take these recent advances into consideration, before completing the work, in spite of the great difficulties under which we, in common with all physiologists, have laboured. The book has been written with the primary object of giving to the student in an easily understandable form the fundamental facts and theories of physiology, hearing in mind the limitations necessary in a student's textbook. We have followed the example of Michael Foster, and have avoided burdening the students memory with the names of authorities. When ready to leave the narrow scope of a textbook for the wide realms of independent thought, those who wish to extend their physiological knowledge can easily find their way into the literature of research by means of the various archives and journals of physiology. Although written primarily to meet the requirements of the medical student, it is hoped that, in view of the ever-increasing importance of the proper application of physiology to general medicine, the work may also prove of value to the general practitioner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies From the Department of Physiology, Vol. 8: October, 1922 One point still remains to be discussed; that is, the bearing of the results with histamine upon the effects following occlusion of difierent vascular areas. The optical curves Show features in common, each presenting changes indicative of initial failure of normal dynamic relations. It might appear, therefore, that the occlusion efi'ects were caused by metabolic products with histamine - like action formed during the periods of stasis. There seems little doubt that such prod ucts may contribute to the effects of occlusion, but that they are not the main cause is evidenced, I believe, by the relatively large amounts of histamine necessary to initiate failure changes and by the observa tion recorded above that during the periods of reestablished circulation through the occluded part there are never indications of a dilating sub stance being carried into the general circulation. Book A Text Book of Human Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by Robert Tigerstedt and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Human Physiology To set fixed limits to the subject matter of physiology is a very difficult task, because, properly conceived, large portions of the entire group of medical and biological sciences belong to its province. A text-book designed primarily for medical students can, however, regard the field as somewhat more restricted; for the prospective physician has abundant opportunity to amplify his knowledge of the bodily functions from his other studies. Hence in this book I have followed the usual custom and have brought together only so much of our information respecting the human body as can be described as pertaining to its normal functions. The discoveries made in the realms of practical medicine, of experimental pathology and of pharmacology, which in many respects are so full of significance for the processes of the body, are, therefore, for the most part passed by. In like manner the facts of comparative physiology have been alluded to only in exceptional cases, since an exhaustive discussion of them would have increased the size of the book to a not inconsiderable extent. For the same reason I have been unable to find a place for the short histological discussion customary in text-books. I do not regard this as an error, for a necessarily brief and superficial resume of the most important histological facts could be of no great service, since the student needs a more extensive knowledge of the finer structure of the body and must in any case obtain this from the text-books devoted especially to that subject. I do not therefore at all mistake the great importance of histology for physiology; on the contrary, I would recommend that in the, study of a text-book of this science a text-book of histology (and one of anatomy) be always at hand in order to combine the physiological facts with the histological and anatomical facts. Physiological chemistry also has developed so far that more and more it can claim the right to be regarded as an independent science. On the other hand it is not possible to present the physiological facts without reference to the chemical processes of the body.
