Download or read book The Unsound Mind and the Law written by George W. Jacoby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unsound Mind and the Law: A Presentation of Forensic Psychiatry In the first main division of the book I purpose treating of the general relation that jurisprudence bears to psychiatry and more especially to consider, in addition to simulation and dis simulation and the self-accusations of the insane, the various degrees of responsibility and the significance they bear to our civil and criminal procedures. The second main division will be devoted to psychiatric expertism and will describe the manifestations by means Of which the most important psychoses and neuro-psychoses may be recognized. The third part is devoted to a consideration of hypnosis and anomalies of sexual sense, and the fourth and last part will indicate the manner in which written or verbal expert Opinions are to be formed and rendered. In this work I hope to be able to do justice to the require ments of the physician as well as to those of the jurist. It has, however, been far from my purpose to write a book on forensic psychiatry in general, for which reason I have endeavored to limit myself to those questions Of juristic psychiatry that may be designated as borderline. Book Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity Or Forensic Psychiatry Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity Or Forensic Psychiatry Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Shobal Vail Clevenger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity, or Forensic Psychiatry, Vol. 2 Ethyl alcohol, Spirit of wine, is commercially assumed to be the base of intoxicating drinks, and the purest of these is capable of working great havoc when abused but on account of the demand for cheap liquor in vast quantities, what is known to chemists as the more poisonous amyl alcohol (potato spirit or fusel oil) is sub stituted for portions of the less harmful ethyl or vinic alcohol. The aroma, or bouquet, of liquors is largely due to certain others of the more poisonous amyl and butyl alcohols, notably the acetic and valeric. All too often, by the time it reaches the average consumer, liquor contains, in addition to the alcohol, diluents to increase bulk, and articles to give it false color, odor, and taste. In the English licensing act of 187 2' there is a schedule of substances called deleterious ingredients, found to have been used in adulterating intoxicating liquors. They are cocculus Indicus, common salt, copperas, Opium, Indian hemp, strychnine, tobacco, darnel seed, logwood, salts of zinc or lead, and alum; and there are also added correctives of acidity, such as litharge, lime, soda, potash astringents like catechu, oak-bark, and sloe leaves; earths for decolorizing; sweetening agents, and ethers for fia voring. Most of these articles are unwholesome, to say the least, and tend to debilitate and otherwise create depraved bodily states. Book Forensic Psychiatry Race and Culture

Download or read book Forensic Psychiatry Race and Culture written by Dr Suman Fernando and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic psychiatry is the discipline which distinguishes the 'mad' from the 'bad', but are its values inherently racist? Why are individuals from non-Western backgrounds over-represented statistically in those diagnosed with schizophrenia and other serious illnesses? The authors argue that the values on which psychiatry is based are firmly rooted in ethnocentric Western culture, with profound implications for individual diagnosis and systems of care. Through detailed exploration of the history of psychiatry, current clinical issues and present public policy, this powerful book traces the growth of a system in which non-conformity to the prevailing cultural norms risks alienation and diagnosis of mental disorder.
