Book Studies in Elementary Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Elementary Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Solon W. Cunningham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Elementary Agriculture The studies of the following pages constitute part of the laboratory course given with the subject of agriculture in the Fresno State Normal. They are designed to prepare teachers for presenting the subject of agriculture in the rural school. They are not predigested and ready for presentation to the child with teacher's story, introduction, description and conclusion complete, but are outlines to direct the student in pre paring the studies for presentation to the child. The work of the student is complete only when, through his own efforts, each study is ready, from the teacher's story to the conclusion, for presentation to school children. Through the preparation of these studies the student gets a broad knowledge of elementary agriculture, experience in pre paring subject matter and material for presenting agricultural studies and nature study lessons, and begins to find, understand, and appreciate the beauty of all things out of doors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Agriculture of Tennessee: With Practical Artithmetic As the population of our country increases, it is fast becoming evident that two things must be done: poorer soil must be cultivated, and what is already under cultivation must be made to produce more. In either case more thoughtful methods in agriculture are absolutely essential. The farmer of to-morrow, who is to-day the farmer's boy, must know how to farm better than his father does. In order to do this, he must acquire a more or less complete knowledge of the sciences on which agriculture is based. The farmer of the future must be able to read farm papers understandingly, or better still, he should be trained for his life work in some agricultural school as doctors, lawyers and teachers are now trained. It is the purpose of this book to give to the farmer's child, who studies it, a start in such necessary knowl edge. The language used is plain and simple, and may be readily understood by any bright boy or girl of twelve years of age. All scientific terms are defined in a simple way whenever it has been necessary to introduce them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Field and Laboratory Studies of Soils

Download or read book Field and Laboratory Studies of Soils written by Arthur Gillett McCall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field and Laboratory Studies of Soils: An Elementary Manual for Students of Agriculture A supply of clean sand, and also some loam, clay and muck soil should be secured in the fall. This material should be dried, pulverized, and passed through a sieve with one eighth-inch mesh, to remove stones and sticks. The exercises are intended to furnish sufficient material for one period per week throughout the year or two periods per week for a half year. Although they are arranged in logical order, it is not necessary that the exercises should be taken up in the exact sequence in which they occur in the text. Indeed, it will be necessary for the teacher to vary the arrangement in order to adapt the study to the season and to the facilities of the school. A small working library should form a part of the equipment. For a study of soils this library should include several elementary books on soils, a collection of Farmers' Bulletins from the United States Department of Agriculture and the publications of the State Experiment Station. Book Field and Laboratory Studies of Crops

Download or read book Field and Laboratory Studies of Crops written by Arthur Gillett McCall and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field and Laboratory, Studies of Crops: An Elementary Manual for Students of Agriculture There is a growing tendency in the schools toward educating children in the common things of life. In some States laws have been passed requiring the teaching of elementary agriculture in the village and rural schools. The object of this work is to interest the pupils in the practical things of country life and to give them some conception of the opportunities which surround them. A majority of the children who attend the village and rural schools will remain in the country, and it is right and proper that they should be educated in the things with which they will have to deal ever}' day of their lives. The success of the work will depend very largely upon the teacher. Pupils are naturally interested in those things with which they are constantly in contact, and need only the encouragement of the teacher to direct their enthusiasm. In this manual a few exercises are given to illustrate some of the fundamental principles of plant growth, but the central idea throughout is the practical application of these principles to crop production and improvement. Some of the exercises are original, but many of them have been adapted from the publications of the United States Department of Agriculture and from the bulletins of the Extension Department of the Ohio State University. The writer wishes to acknowledge his deep indebtedness to his wife, Hattie F. McCall, for helpful criticisms and suggestions. Book Elementary Agriculture and Horticulture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Agriculture and Horticulture Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Agriculture and Horticulture This Manual is intended particularly for the use of the teacher. The work herein outlined is expected to meet the needs of busy teachers who may not have had much training in the fundamental principles of the sciences underlying agriculture. Some training, of course, is necessary, but the wide-awake teacher who is willing to put forth some personal effort may accomplish something worth while, if the lessons here planned for his guidance are followed out. The topics are selected so as to be adapted to the average rural school of one teacher, and are sufficiently elastic to be made use of in any part of Ontario, even in the cities. The seasonal arrangement is made use of because, unlike many other subjects, practical agriculture must necessarily follow the seasons. The various duties per taining to the farm should be studied when they occur, not a month before or a month after. The lessons are outlined so as to require the laboratory method, and the pupils are expected to do agriculture, not simply read about it. Moreover, most, if not all, of the lessons are of such a character as can be taken up in a half-hour period, with a little forethought, or they can be left off, and concluded during a class period a day or so afterwards. It is not intended that each school should complete all the lessons given, nor is it intended to confine the classes strictly in every case to these lessons. If the teacher wishes to undertake practical exercises, other than those outlined, which he considers suitable to the locality, there could be no objection offered, so long as such exercises fall within the Course of Study. Book One Hundred Lessons in Elementary Agriculture

Download or read book One Hundred Lessons in Elementary Agriculture written by Aretas W. Nolan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Lessons in Elementary Agriculture: A Manual and d104 of Elementary Agriculture for Rural Schools The preparation of this book is an effort to combine in convenient form the directions for the laboratory experiments, field exercises, text-book studies, and notebook work, which the author has found most practical and helpful in teaching elementary agriculture and nature-study in rural and consolidated schools. It has been the aim of the author to simplify the subject-matter, materials and methods usually presented in text-books on agriculture, so that the teacher in the one-room county school, in the grammar grades of a graded school or in the beginning years of a high school may find the lessons easily practical, within the range of the pupils' understanding, and full of profitable interest and educational value. It is a text-book and manual combined, for the purpose of leading away from the usual text-book method of teaching, to the method of first-hand contact with the real things of Agriculture. If the work is not conducted by means of real things, the educational value is lost, and the information given not permanently retained. The lessons do not follow each other in very close sequence, each lesson being independent, permitting the teacher to choose as the season and occasion make the materials available. It is not the purpose to make "ready made" lessons, which will discourage or take away the need of effort on the part of the teacher. but to furnish suggestive subject-matter and methods upon which he may build from his own initiative and resourcefulness. Book New Elementary Agriculture

Download or read book New Elementary Agriculture written by Charles E. Bessey and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Elementary Agriculture: An Elementary Text Book Dealing With Plants, Insects, Birds, Weather, and Animals of the Farm Nebraska is an agricultural state. The products of her soil are the basis of her industries and her prosperity. The children of our great state of Nebraska should be familiar with our crops, our grains and grasses, our flowers and fruits, our trees and shrubs and weeds, our domestic animals and birds and insects. Our children should have a practical knowledge of the management of a farm, of the composition of the soil, and of the adaptability of the farm and its soil for the cultivation of certain plants and the counter effect of such plant growth upon the soil. The children of Nebraska should love nature, they should be taught nature's ways and means, taught to observe her phenomena closely and in such a manner that they will learn to love her. Nearly all industries of mankind have their origin in the soil, and children should be led to see the relation between farm labor and its products and the marts of trade and commerce. Much of the work of the school, including instruction in geography, arithmetic, science, and literature might be correlated profitably with instruction in agriculture and nature study. A school garden with the actual work intelligently directed might prove an inspiration to honest toil and better living. Book Manual of Agriculture for Secondary Schools

Download or read book Manual of Agriculture for Secondary Schools written by O. Barto and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Agriculture for Secondary Schools: Studies in Soils and Crop Production We are making educational history these days at a rapid rate, and not the least important chapter is on the new status of affairs industrial. At last agriculture is coming into its own, and it will not be many years until this subject will have taken its place in the American secondary school system as it is now taking its place within the colleges and universities. This is not only because agriculture employs the time and absorbs the lives of a third of our people and feeds us all; it is not only because the future and the development of every people is limited by the production of the soil it occupies; it is not only because it is expedient from the community standpoint that this subject should be studied by young people and developed by science; it is largely because, after all, the subject-matter of agriculture, its method and its outlook, are exceptionally valuable in their influence upon the individual, educationally. Elsewhere I have written, It is dangerous to attempt to educate a live boy with no reference to the vocational, and I might add that it is dangerous to the community, as it is unprofitable to the individuals, to fill our schoolhouses day after day with young men and women to study seriously all the problems of life except the one supreme problem of how to make a living, a large and significant portion of which problem from the racial standpoint is comprised within the range of farming and farm life. Download or read book Country Life Education Classic Reprint written by United States Department Of Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Country Life Education Success had hardly been attained in collegiate courses in agriculture when secondary schools for agricultural education began successfully to develop. In 1888 the University of Minnesota began an experiment at developing an agricultural high-school course. This experiment is of none the less value anal of all the greater interest because it was an outgrowth of the failure of agricultural courses of collegiate grade to gain a foothold in a State university. Just as Congress by its landgrant act forced colleges of agriculture upon the State, this agricultural high-school movement was injected into the school system upon the initiative of farmers and business men. At present between thirty and forty agricultural high schools have been established in the United States. In one line of country-lit'e education school men and nonschool men have together taken up the practical in school work. Farmers and educators together have entered upon the development of rural schools so as to have them cover agriculture and home economics as well as the Three R's. Thus the school people are especially championing the consolidation of rural schools, and the farmers are laying stress upon the introduction of agriculture into all rural schools. Both classes are rap idly coming to favor both propositions. The farmers are coming to see that agriculture can not be successfully introduced into the one-room rural schools, and the teachers are coming to see that agriculture and home economies are to have very strong positions in the primary country school curriculum alongside the Three R's. Book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Albert Russell Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Agriculture This book is designed for the purpose of introducing the study of \a.griculture into the seventh and eighth grades of our elementary schools. It may also meet a need in some of the smaller high schools and in ungraded Special and private schools. When the pupil comes to well-developed high-school work, he will need a more detailed and specific text. The book is founded on the suggestions in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Education in Schools for Rural Communi ties, Of the National Educational Association. That Committee recommended for the school years 6 to 8, four sets of subjects as follows: first half year, the affairs Of agriculture; second half year, the soil; second year, farming schemes and crops; third year, ani mals. A condensation Of this plan into a two-year scheme has been attempted in the present volume. It has been the aim Of the author to cover the work very largely in a nature-study Spirit, by which it is meant that the pupil Shall be brought into as close touch as possible with the actual farms, soils, crops, animals, and affairs. The problems are intended to set the pupils at work on their own account rather than to enable them to answer questions that may be suggested in the text. It is, of course, essential to practical school conditions that there shall be reading-matter and recitation-matter in the book. Perhaps Part I, dealing with the general agricultural situation, may be used as a series Of introductory reading and discussion exercises, the actual work with subject-matter to begin with Part II. The open book method of teaching, now used successfully in many schools for history and geography, might be employed advantageously with this text, especially in schools in which nature-study receives little attention. It is assumed that the teacher will see that the pupils work out the problems, Or as many of them as have useful application to the affairs of the particular community. It is to be hoped that there will be a school-garden on the premises, or that small areas may be set aside at the homes of the pupils, on which many of the sug gestions in the book may be worked out personally. It is specially to be desired that the parents be brought into the work, in order that the agricultural affairs of the community may be related to the school. Therefore, a large number of problems have been pre sented with this end in view, the expectation being that the pupil will ask the parents for the proper solution of the questions.
