Book STUDIES IN EIGENVALUE THEORY

Download or read book STUDIES IN EIGENVALUE THEORY written by Alexander Weinstein and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was shown on a simple buckling problem that the method of Lagrangian multipliers, which was asssumed to be a simplification of the method of intermediate problems, actually yields incorrect numerical results. On the other hand, the method of intermediate problems provides simple and clear rules which are both mathematically rigorous and computationally feasible. A thorough study was made into the theoretical ramifications of intermediate problems. This investigation established the fact that intermediate problems, in addition to giving reliable lower bounds to eigenvalues, have stimulated research in purely theoretical subjects. Moreover, the contributions of intermediate problems to perturbation theory were clarified. The maximum-minimum and minimum-maximum principles for eigenvalues were extended to a class of unbounded operators of the type appearing in Schrodinger's theory. The properties of projections of selfadjoint operators were investigated which led to some sufficient conditions for such operators to be selfadjoint. Conditions were established between the maximum-minimum and minimum-maximum principles which pointed out their complementary nature as well as some basic differences.

Book Eigenvalue and Eigenvector Problems in Applied Mechanics

Download or read book Eigenvalue and Eigenvector Problems in Applied Mechanics written by Sorin Vlase and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents, in a uniform way, several problems in applied mechanics, which are analysed using the matrix theory and the properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. It reveals that various problems and studies in mechanical engineering produce certain patterns that can be treated in a similar way. Accordingly, the same mathematical apparatus allows us to study not only mathematical structures such as quadratic forms, but also mechanics problems such as multibody rigid mechanics, continuum mechanics, vibrations, elastic and dynamic stability, and dynamic systems. In addition, the book explores a wealth of engineering applications.

Book A Dynamical Approach to Random Matrix Theory

Download or read book A Dynamical Approach to Random Matrix Theory written by László Erdős and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A co-publication of the AMS and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University This book is a concise and self-contained introduction of recent techniques to prove local spectral universality for large random matrices. Random matrix theory is a fast expanding research area, and this book mainly focuses on the methods that the authors participated in developing over the past few years. Many other interesting topics are not included, and neither are several new developments within the framework of these methods. The authors have chosen instead to present key concepts that they believe are the core of these methods and should be relevant for future applications. They keep technicalities to a minimum to make the book accessible to graduate students. With this in mind, they include in this book the basic notions and tools for high-dimensional analysis, such as large deviation, entropy, Dirichlet form, and the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. This manuscript has been developed and continuously improved over the last five years. The authors have taught this material in several regular graduate courses at Harvard, Munich, and Vienna, in addition to various summer schools and short courses. Titles in this series are co-published with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.

Book Locating Eigenvalues in Graphs

Download or read book Locating Eigenvalues in Graphs written by Carlos Hoppen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on linear time eigenvalue location algorithms for graphs. This subject relates to spectral graph theory, a field that combines tools and concepts of linear algebra and combinatorics, with applications ranging from image processing and data analysis to molecular descriptors and random walks. It has attracted a lot of attention and has since emerged as an area on its own. Studies in spectral graph theory seek to determine properties of a graph through matrices associated with it. It turns out that eigenvalues and eigenvectors have surprisingly many connections with the structure of a graph. This book approaches this subject under the perspective of eigenvalue location algorithms. These are algorithms that, given a symmetric graph matrix M and a real interval I, return the number of eigenvalues of M that lie in I. Since the algorithms described here are typically very fast, they allow one to quickly approximate the value of any eigenvalue, which is a basic step in most applications of spectral graph theory. Moreover, these algorithms are convenient theoretical tools for proving bounds on eigenvalues and their multiplicities, which was quite useful to solve longstanding open problems in the area. This book brings these algorithms together, revealing how similar they are in spirit, and presents some of their main applications. This work can be of special interest to graduate students and researchers in spectral graph theory, and to any mathematician who wishes to know more about eigenvalues associated with graphs. It can also serve as a compact textbook for short courses on the topic.
