Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophies and Religions of China A mlssing la - In the same way therefore that the many Chinese who want to succeed in Western affairs are beginning to make our philosophies and religions a prominent feature of their study, so those among ourselves who wish to be first on the field ready to reap the best advantages and realize the highest benefits which the opening up of China will place in their power, must spare no pains to become fully conversant with all that China holds most sacred on these two important topics. We must remember that however lightly we may regard them the Chinese see a vast fund of meaning in the utterances of their philosophers, whom they look up to with the deepest reverence, and that they feel a real power in their different forms of religion, which have borne so large a part in influencing the lives of themselves and their ancestors for untold generations. Not only can we not afford to ignore these studies, but we shall find in them one of the missing links in the chain which is to draw the East and West into closer connection, and expand their mutual advantages. The sooner therefore that this link can be supplied and adjusted in its proper place the better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in China: Universism a Key to the Study of Taoism and Confucianism HE object of the Writer of this book is to exhibit his View of the primitive and fundamental element of Chinese religion and ethics. That view is based on independent research into the ancient literature of China and into the actual state of her religion. The evident necessity to study that primitive element from ancient Chinese books has compelled the author to quote a great number of passages from those books. Without using the building materials, he could not build. He has translated the passages independently from former translators, but with conscientious consultation of the opinions of native commentators. The source of every quotation is faithfully mentioned. Short notes about the sources can be found in the book by means of the Index, so that there is no need of describing or summarising them here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hanlin Papers: Second Series, Essays on the History, Philosophy, and Religion of the Chinese A Book like this, consisting of a series of Papers, - the slow growth of years, - possesses one conspicuous advantage over a work more hastily written. It is not made to order; but each Essay springs from the spontaneous inclination of the author, and gives the results of his special studies. The Papers in this volume fall under the general heads of History, Philosophy, and Religion. Some of the topics, such as International Law and Diplomacy in ancient China, are so new that they have never before been treated by any writer, native or foreign. One or two, however, resemble more or less subjects treated in the First Series but they will in all cases be found to be characterized by new views or ampler treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Chinese Religion: A Critique of Max Muller and Other Authors Tm: work I present to the public does not need an excuse. The importance of the subject will be felt by all readers. That I, a practical missionary and a German, have ventured to undertake such a thing is owing to the great fault of so many able writers not having done it before. They, of course, could have given a very superior production, if they only had put their pens to the task. But, as it is, much is written on Chinese religion, on the religion of other nations and on religion in general, that betrays on every page a great want of clearness in method and somewhat con fused notions in regard to religion. I hope my little book will do some good service in this respect. The Science of Religion is very important indeed. More harm than good will, however, be done, if it is not. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist: a revelatory portrait of religion in China today, its history, the spiritual traditions of its Eastern and Western faiths, and the ways in which it is influencing China's future. Following a century of violent antireligious campaigns, China is now awash with new temples, churches, and mosques as well as cults, sects, and politicians trying to harness religion for their own ends. Driving this explosion of faith is uncertainty over what it means to be Chinese, and how to live an ethical life in a country that discarded traditional morality a century ago and is still searching for new guideposts. Ian Johnson lived for extended periods with underground church members, rural Daoists, and Buddhist pilgrims. He has distilled these experiences into a cycle of festivals, births, deaths, detentions, and struggle a great awakening of faith that is shaping the soul of the world s newest superpower. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rewriting Early Chinese Texts examines the problems of reconstituting and editing ancient manuscripts that will revise—indeed "rewrite"—Chinese history. It is now generally recognized that the extensive archaeological discoveries made in China over the last three decades necessitate such a rewriting and will keep an army of scholars busy for years to come. However, this is by no means the first time China's historical record has needed rewriting. In this book, author Edward L. Shaughnessy explores the issues involved in editing manuscripts, rewriting them, both today and in the past. The book begins with a discussion of the difficulties encountered by modern archaeologists and paleographers working with manuscripts discovered in ancient tombs. The challenges are considerable: these texts are usually written in archaic script on bamboo strips and are typically fragmentary and in disarray. It is not surprising that their new editions often meet with criticism from other scholars. Shaughnessy then moves back in time to consider efforts to reconstitute similar bamboo-strip manuscripts found in the late third century in a tomb in Jixian, Henan. He shows that editors at the time encountered many of the same difficulties faced by modern archaeologists and paleographers, and that the first editions produced by a court-appointed team of editors quickly prompted criticism from other scholars of the time. Shaughnessy concludes with a detailed study of the editing of one of these texts, the Bamboo Annals (Zhushu jinian), arguably the most important manuscript ever discovered in China. Showing how at least two different, competing editions of this text were produced by different editors, and how the differences between them led later scholars to regard the original edition—the only one still extant—as a forgery, Shaughnessy argues for this text's place in the rewriting of early Chinese history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious System of China, Vol. 3: Its Ancient Forms, Evolution, History and Present Aspect Manners, Customs and Social Institutions Connected Therewith; Book I., Disposal of the Dead, Part III, the Grave (Second Half) The simple conclusion is, that family graves must have been of common prevalence in the ancient Chinese Empire. The custom of living together in clans, each composed of the descendants of one family, greatly favoured this state of things, naturally turning the burial ground of each settlement or village into one large family grave-yard.
